Siderophore-mediated interactions determine the disease suppressiveness of microbial consortia

Interactions between plant pathogens and root-associated microbes play an important role in determining disease outcomes. While several studies have suggested that steering these interactions may improve plant health, such approaches have remained challenging in practice. Because of low iron availability in most soils, competition for iron via secreted siderophore molecules might influence microbial interaction outcomes. Here we tested if bacterial interactions mediated by iron-scavenging siderophores can be used to predict the disease suppressiveness of microbial consortia against soil-borne Ralstonia solanacearum bacterial pathogen in tomato rhizosphere. Iron availability significantly affected the interactions within inoculated consortia and between the consortia and the pathogen. We observed contrasting effects of siderophores and other non-siderophore metabolites on the pathogen growth, while the siderophore effects were relatively much stronger. Specifically, disease incidence was reduced in vivo when the inoculated consortia produced siderophores that the pathogen could not use for its own growth. Employing siderophore-mediated interactions to engineer functionally robust microbial inoculants show promise in protecting plants from soil-borne pathogens.

Infrastructure Networks within NFDI: Survey among Institutions partnering with NFDI consortia

This dataset is part of Base4NFDI's proposal to acquire funding for developing NFDI-wide basic services.

Base4NFDI rolled out a survey to quantitatively illustrate the extent of its ties to German and international infrastructures, particularly in the area of computing. The survey - Infrastructure Networks within NFDI - ran based on a Google Form. The cleaned and anonymized dataset lists these infrastructure ties for 113 unique institutions and has a total of 163 entries as some institutions are partners to multiple consortia. The dataset does not cover all 200+ member institutions of the NFDI Association.

Unraveling the roles of coastal bacterial consortia in degradation of various lignocellulosic substrates

Lignocellulose, as the abundant natural organic carbon on earth, plays a key role in regulating the global carbon cycle, but there are only few studies in marine ecosystems. Little information is available about the extant lignin-degrading bacteria in coastal wetlands, limiting our understanding of their ecological roles and traits in lignocellulose degradation. We utilized in situ lignocellulose enrichment experiments coupled with 16S rRNA amplicon and shotgun metagenomics sequencing to identify and characterize bacterial consortia attributed to different lignin/lignocellulosic substrates in the southern-east intertidal zone of East China Sea. We found the consortia enriched on woody lignocellulose showed higher diversity than those on the herbaceous substrate. The substrate-dependent taxonomic groups were, hence, revealed. A time-dissimilarity pattern with increased alpha diversity over time was observed. Additionally, this study showed a comprehensive set of genes associated with lignin degradation potential, containing 23 gene families involved in lignin depolymerization, and 371 gene families involved in aerobic/anaerobic lignin-derived aromatic compound pathways, challenging the traditional view of lignin stability within marine ecosystems. In contrast to similar cellulase genes among the lignocellulose substrates, the significantly different ligninolytic gene groups were observed between consortia under woody and herbaceous substrates. Importantly, we not only observed synergistic degradation of lignin and hemi-/cellulose, but also pinpointed the potential biological actors at the levels of taxa and functional genes, which indicates that the alternation of aerobic and anaerobic catabolism could facilitate lignocellulose degradation. Our study advances the understanding of coastal bacterial community assembly and metabolic potential for lignocellulose substrates.
