Dataset for: A continuous classification of the 480,000 lakes of the conterminous US based on geographic archetypes

These datasets were used in a journal article with the goal of developing a new geographic classification approach for ~480,000 lakes ≥ 1 ha in the conterminous U.S. based on archetypes defined as endmembers with distinct combinations of climate, hydrologic, geologic, topographic, and morphometric properties. We identified seven lake archetypes; each study lake was then assigned weights for each of the archetypes. The data used to develop the archetypes, archetype weights, and variables used in associated analyses is provided in three data tables. The first includes the lake-specific transformed predictors used to generate the seven archetypes, the weights corresponding to each archetype, the archetype with the maximum weight and the weight of that maximum archetype. The second provides lake-specific raw values for each predictor and for the 19 response variables used to explore aspects of the archetype classification. The final metadata table provides a data dictionary for all columns in the previously mentioned data tables.

Animations of the data are available here: https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.2438110

If you are using this data set, please cite the following publication:

Tulbure, M.G. and M. Broich (2018). Spatiotemporal patterns and effects of climate and land use on surface water extent dynamics in a dryland region with three decades of Landsat satellite data. Science of the Total Environment. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0048969718347466

The data represent statistically validated surface water and flooding extent dynamics derived from seasonally continous Landsat TM/ETM+ data and random forest models, and summarised to the maximum extent of surface water per season between 1986-2011 over Australia's Murray-Darling Basin. The overall accuracy was over 99% and producer's accuracy for water 87% +/- 3%.

The method is described in the following publication:
Tulbure, M.G., M. Broich, S.V. Stehman, A. File naming convention is as follows:
yy_inund_freq_season_SamplingMethod. For example, "99_inund_freq_winter_max" will represent inundation frequency for winter 1999 resampled using a maximum resampling method.

Inundation frequency represents the number of times a pixel has been flagged as flooded out of the times that pixel had valid observations * 100. Valid observation exclude no data values and clouds. The valid range of inundation frequency is 0-100 [%], with 255 indicating no data values. Data type is eight bit unsigned integer (uint8).

The data were resampled to 120m resolution to reduce file size. The resampling methods used include max (e.g. selects the max value of all non-NODATA contributing 30m pixels) and mean (median and min can be provided upon request). If you are unsure which resampling to use, you may want to start with the mean.

NEON Provisional Continuous and Field Discharge - Water Year 2024 (2023-10-01 - 2024-09-30), United States
As of the date of this publication in EDI, NEON publishes one-minute continuous discharge data that have been corrected and gap-filled in the Continuous Discharge (DP4.00130.001, https://data.neonscience.org/data-products/DP4.00130.001) data product. As part of a recent manuscript describing the data quality improvements to NEON's continuous discharge data brought on my implementation of corrections and gap-filling, a mixture of released and provisional NEON data were downloaded. To ensure the reproducibility of the data set used to conduct the analysis presented in the manuscript, the downloaded provisional data, which is subject to change, is saved as a static data set in this EDI publication. The same is done for the Discharge Field Collection (DP1.20048.001, https://data.neonscience.org/data-products/DP1.20048.001) data product, which is used in the same analysis.
Sacramento-San Joaquin Bay-Delta Continuous (15 minute) Water Quality Monitoring: South Delta Region, collected by the North Central Region Office, DWR, 1999 – ongoing
The Department of Water Resources (DWR) Water Quality Evaluation Section (WQES) provides technical expertise and program support for regulatory compliance, water operations, emergency response, and environmental restoration. Wireless telemetry is used to transmit real-time provisional data to the California Data Exchange Center (CDEC), making the data publicly available. The published dataset is quality controlled and quality assured providing detailed information at 15-minute intervals from 18 monitoring stations, using Xylem’s YSI EXO2 and YSI 6600 multiparameter sondes to document individual water quality measurements of multiple water quality parameters. The dataset informs operations for the California State Water Project and supports water quality monitoring required by Water Right Decision D-1641, the Delta Compliance Program, the South Delta Temporary Barriers and the South Delta Improvement Program. It is important to note that the start dates and subsequent equipment upgrades vary between stations and equipment leading to discrepancies in the dataset’s date ranges.
