Local plant diversity and soybean biological control 2011 Harvest Measures:Biodiversity II: Effects of Plant Biodiversity on Population and Ecosystem Processes

Biodiversity II (E120) is designed to determine how the number of plant species affects the dynamics of ecological processes at the population, community, and ecosystem levels. By experimentally manipulating the number of species and the kinds of species, the amount of plant growth and the change from year to year, that result can be examined. Plots are large (9m x 9m actively maintained) and well-replicated, allowing responses of plant pathogens, insect herbivores, seed predators, soil parameters, invasive plant species and other variables to also be studied. Plots were seeded in May 1994 to have 1, 2, 4, 8, or 16 species, with roughly 30 replicates of each diversity level. The species composition of each plot was chosen by random draw from a pool of 18 grassland perennials that included four warm-season (C4) grasses, four cool-season (C3) grasses, four legumes, four non-legume forbs, and two woody species. All species occur in monoculture allowing comparison of responses of each species in monoculture to combinations of these same species. The experiment was established in 1994 by the lead investigators David Tilman, Peter Reich, Johannes Knops, and David Wedin. Experiment 120 is similar to Experiment 123, but it uses larger plots to provide a large capacity for long-term subexperiments.

Net ecosystem exchange measurements throughout the 2020 growing season across an N fertilization gradient:Nutrient Network. A cross-site investigation of bottom-up control over herbaceous plant community dynamics and ecosystem function.

This experiment is one implementation of a globally distributed experiment, known as the Nutrient Network. At Cedar Creek, as in over 70 other sites in grasslands around the world, the experiment aims to describe impacts of increased nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, sulfur and other metals) and decreased herbivory (removal of mammals by fencing). Two overarching questions are being explored with these manipulations: 1. To what extent are plant production and diversity co-limited by multiple nutrients in herbaceous-dominated communities? 2. Under what conditions do grazers or fertilization control plant biomass, diversity, and composition? By utilizing identical protocols at diverse grassland sites around the world, NutNet aims to uncover both the generalities in ecosystem functioning, and the contingencies or differences which can obscure those common mechanisms. In addition to the standard NutNet protocol, e247 includes an additional low Nitrogen gradient (1 gram Nitrogen per meter squared per year and 5 grams Nitrogen per meter squared per year in addition to the standard 10 grams Nitrogen per meter squared per year).

Data from: Estimating transmission dynamics and serial interval of the first wave of COVID-19 infections under different control measures: A statistical analysis in Tunisia from February 29 to May 5, 2020

<p>Background: Describing transmission dynamics of the outbreak and impact of intervention measures are critical to planning responses to future outbreaks and providing timely information to guide policy makers decision. We estimate serial interval (SI) and temporal reproduction number (R<sub>t</sub>) of SARS-CoV-2 in Tunisia.</p> <p>Methods: We collected data of investigations and contact tracing between March 1, 2020 and May 5, 2020 as well as illness onset data during the period February 29-May 5, 2020 from National Observatory of New and Emerging Diseases of Tunisia. Maximum likelihood (ML) approach is used to estimate dynamics of R<sub>t</sub>.</p> <p>Results: 491 of infector-infectee pairs were involved, with 14.46% reported pre-symptomatic transmission. SI follows Gamma distribution with mean 5.30 days [95% CI 4.66-5.95] and standard deviation 0.26 [95% CI 0.23-0.30]. Also, w<span>e estimated large changes in </span>R<sub>t</sub><span> in response to the combined lockdown interventions. The </span>R<sub>t</sub><span> moves from </span>3.18 [95% CI 2.73-3.69] <span>to 1.77 [95% CI 1.49-2.08] with </span>curfew<span> prevention measure, and under the epidemic threshold (0.89 </span>[95% CI 0.84-0.94]) by national lockdown measure<span>.</span></p> <p><span>Conclusions: </span>Overall, our findings highlight contribution of <span>interventions</span> to interrupt transmission of SARS-CoV-2 in Tunisia.</p>

Quality control for modern bone collagen stable carbon and nitrogen isotope measurements

<p><strong>(1)</strong> Isotopic analyses of collagen, the main protein preserved in sub fossil bone and tooth, has long provided a powerful tool for the reconstruction of ancient diets and environments. Although isotopic studies of contemporary ecosystems have typically focused on more accessible tissues (e.g., muscle, hair), there is growing interest in the potential for analyses of collagen because it is often available in hard tissue archives (e.g., scales, skin, bone, tooth), allowing for enhanced long-term retrospective studies. The quality of measurements of the stable carbon and nitrogen isotopic compositions of ancient samples are subject to robust and well-established criteria for detection of contaminants and digenesis. Among these quality control (QC) criteria, the most widely utilized is the atomic C:N ratio (C:N<sub>Atomic</sub>), which for ancient samples has an acceptable range between  2.9 and 3.6. While this QC criterion was developed for ancient materials, it has increasingly being applied to collagen from modern tissues.</p> <p><strong>(2)</strong> Here we use a large survey of published collagen amino acid compositions (n<em> </em>= 436) from 193 vertebrate species as well as recent experimental isotopic evidence from 413 modern collagen extracts to demonstrate that the C:N<sub>Atomic</sub> range used for ancient samples is not suitable for assessing collagen quality of modern and archived historical samples.</p> <p><strong>(3) </strong>For modern tissues, collagen C:N<sub>Atomic</sub> falling outside 3.00–3.30 for fish and 3.00–3.28 for mammals and birds can produce systematically skewed isotopic compositions and may lead to significant interpretative errors. These findings are followed by a review of protocols for improving C:N<sub>Atomic</sub> criteria for modern collagen extracts.</p> <p><strong>(4)</strong> Given the tremendous conservation and environmental policy-informing potential that retrospective isotopic analyses of collagen from contemporary and archived vertebrate tissues have for addressing pressing questions about long-term environmental conditions and species behaviours, it is critical that QC criteria tailored to modern tissues are established.</p>

A blinded, controlled trial of objective measurement in Parkinson's disease

<p>Medical conditions with effective therapies are usually managed with objective measurement and therapeutic targets. Parkinson's disease has effective therapies, but continuous objective measurement has only recently become available. This blinded, controlled study examined whether management of Parkinson's disease was improved when clinical assessment and therapeutic decisions were aided by objective measurement. The primary endpoint was improvement in the Movement Disorder Society-United Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale's (MDS-UPDRS) Total Score. In one arm, objective measurement assisted doctors to alter therapy over successive visits until objective measurement scores were in target. Patients in the other arm were conventionally assessed and therapies were changed until judged optimal. There were 75 subjects in the objective measurement arm and 79 in the arm with conventional assessment and treatment. There were statistically significant improvements in the moderate clinically meaningful range in the MDS-UPDRS Total, III, IV scales in the arm using objective measurement, but not in the conventionally treated arm. These findings show that global motor and non-motor disability is improved when the management of Parkinson's disease is assisted by objective measurement.</p>

Soc. 171, 080510 (2024), https://doi.org/10.1149/1945-7111/ad6938</a>.</strong><br><br></p> <p><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> <p>Capacity and internal resistance are key properties of batteries determining energy content and power capability. We present a novel algorithm for estimating the absolute values of capacity and internal resistance from voltage and current data. The algorithm is based on voltage-controlled models (VCM). Experimentally-measured voltage is used as input variable to an equivalent circuit model. The simulation gives current as output, which is compared to the experimentally-measured current. We show that capacity loss and resistance increase lead to characteristic fingerprints in the current output of the simulation. In order to exploit these fingerprints, a theory is developed for calculating capacity and resistance from the difference between simulated and measured current. The findings are cast into an algorithm for operando diagnosis of batteries operated with arbitrary load profiles. The algorithm is demonstrated using cycling data from lithium-ion pouch cells operated on full cycles, shallow cycles, and dynamic cycles typical for electric vehicles. Capacity and internal resistance of a &ldquo;fresh&rdquo; cell was estimated with high accuracy (mean absolute errors of 0.9 % and 1.8 %, respectively). For an &ldquo;aged&rdquo; cell, the algorithm required adaptation of the model&rsquo;s open-circuit voltage curve in order to obtain high accuracies.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Copyright and IP information:</strong></p> <p>Copyright 2024 by Wolfgang G.
