Data from: Interactive bioacoustic playback as a tool for detecting and exploring nonhuman intelligence: "Conversing" with an Alaskan humpback whale
<p>Here we report on a rare and opportunistic acoustic turn-taking with an adult female humpback whale, known as Twain, in Southeast Alaska. Post hoc acoustic and statistical analyses of a 20-minute acoustic exchange between the broadcast of a recorded contact call, known as a 'whup/throp', with call responses by Twain revealed an intentional human-whale acoustic (and behavioral) interaction. Our results show that Twain participated both physically and acoustically in three phases of interaction (Phase 1: Engagement, Phase 2: Agitation, Phase 3: Disengagement), independently determined by blind observers reporting on surface behavior and respiratory activity of the interacting whale. A close examination of both changes to the latency between Twain's calls and the temporal matching to the latency of the exemplar across phases indicated that Twain was actively engaged in the exchange during Phase 1 (Engagement), less so during Phase 2 (Agitation), and disengaged during Phase 3 (Disengagement). These results, while preliminary, point to several for effective playback design, namely the importance of salient, dynamic and adaptive playbacks, that should be utilized in experimentation with whales and other interactive nonhuman species.</p>
Harmonized INSEE socio-demographic IRIS-level data and IRIS conversion file (2010-2020)
<p>The smallest level of aggregation for sociodemographic data made publicly available by the French INSEE is the IRIS. Data is downloadable on INSEE websites but decomposed by type of variable and by year. I thus combined all datasets into a single homogenous dataset for practicality. It includes on the period 2010-2020 :</p> <ul> <li>Population structure (age, gender...) data</li> <li>Economic occupation CSP data</li> <li>Available income data</li> <li>Family data</li> </ul> <p>Since a sizeable amount of IRIS change each year, timewise comparisons are limited. I therefore created a conversion file. Each IRIS is expressed as a % combination of previous IRIS. This allows to track IRIS merge, IRIS split and border changes. Measurement errors linked to border overlap were detected when the overlap of 2 IRIS was less than 1 percent. The IRIS overlap without the measurement error is the variable _ajuste (pardon my French). This allows to express the IRIS of a year as the wieghted sum of the IRIS of any other given year.</p> <p>You will also find the codes I used to create each of the files included in this project on my github. The annotation may be lacking, it is currently being improved. </p>

Data from: Ultra-wideband and polarization-independent RCS reduction based on polarization conversion metasurface
<p>We proposed an ultra-wideband polarization conversion metasurface (PCM). Because it is an anisotropic structure with a pair of mutually perpendicular symmetric axes<i> u</i> and <i>v</i>, and the phase difference between the reflection coefficients under <i>u</i>- and <i>v</i>-polarized incidences is close to 180<sup>°</sup> in an ultra-wide frequency range from 9.5 to 29.5 GHz, it can realize ultra-wideband circular polarization (CP) maintaining reflection and make its co-polarized reflection coefficient under CP incidence close to 1.0 in the ultra-wide band 9.2-29.7 GHz. In addition, when its unit cell structure is rotated by an angle <i>ψ</i>, almost ±2<i>ψ</i> Pancharatnam-Berry (PB) phase will be generated in co-polarized reflection coefficient under CP incidence. Thus, based on the proposed PCM, an ultra-wideband Pancharatnam-Berry (PB) 2-dit coding metasurface is conveniently proposed. The simulation and experimental results show that the coding metasurface can achieve more than 10 dB radar cross section (RCS) reduction in the ultra-wide frequency band 8.7-29.3 GHz with a relative bandwidth of 108.4% under normal incidence with arbitrary polarizations, in addition, when the incident angle is increased to 30<sup>°</sup>, the RCS reduction performance can be kept well. In this data file, the simulation results obtained by commercial software Ansys HFSS and measurement results are listed.</p>

One file includes the responses to 30 demographic questions and the other one 88 ICF-based questions. Data from: Evolutionary variation in gene conversion at the avian MHC is explained by fluctuating selection, gene copy numbers, and life history
<p>The Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) multigene family encodes key pathogen-recognition molecules of the vertebrate adaptive immune system. Hyper-polymorphism of MHC genes is <em>de novo</em> generated by point mutations, but new haplotypes may also arise by re-shuffling of existing variation through intra- and inter-locus gene conversion. Although the occurrence of gene conversion at the MHC has been known for decades, we still have limited understanding of its functional importance. Here, I took advantage of extensive genetic resources (~9000 sequences) to investigate a broad scale macroevolutionary patterns in gene conversion processes at the MHC across nearly 200 avian species. Gene conversion was found to constitute a universal mechanism in birds, as 83% of species showed footprints of gene conversion at either MHC class and 25% of all allelic variants were attributed to gene conversion. Gene conversion processes were stronger at MHC-II than MHC-I, but inter-specific variation at both MHC classes was explained by similar evolutionary scenarios, reflecting fluctuating selection towards different optima and drift. Gene conversion showed uneven phylogenetic distribution across birds and was driven by gene copy number variation, supporting significant role of inter-locus gene conversion processes in the evolution of the avian MHC. Finally, MHC gene conversion was stronger in species with fast life histories (high fecundity) and in long-distance migrants, likely reflecting variation in population sizes and host-pathogen coevolutionary dynamics. The results provide a robust comparative framework for understanding macroevolutionary variation in gene conversion at the avian MHC and reinforce important contribution of this mechanism to functional MHC diversity.</p>
Replication data for Nematzadeh et al. "Information Overload in Group Communication: From Conversation to Cacophony in the Twitch Chat"
<p>A subset of the chat logs dump from Twitch used in this work is provided, to help replicate the central findings of this work (<a href="https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.1182793">https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.1182793</a>). Data are aggregated and include the number of messages posted in each channel and the number of users posting them, sampled at intervals of 5 minutes. To protect the identity of the users in this data collection, message contents and user names are not included in this dataset. Stream names have been replaced with numeric IDs. <br> No additional filtering or data cleaning operation has been applied to this data.
