Costs of territoriality: A review of hypotheses, meta-analysis, and field study

<p>The evolution of territoriality reflects the balance between the benefit and cost of monopolising a resource. While the benefit of territoriality is generally intuitive (improved access to resources), our understanding of its cost is less clear. This paper combines: 1. a review of hypotheses and meta-analytic benchmarking of costs across diverse taxa; and 2. a new empirical test of hypotheses using a longitudinal study of free-living male territorial lizards. The cost of territoriality was best described as a culmination of multiple factors, but especially costs resulting from the time required to maintain a territory (identified by the meta-analysis) or those exacerbated by a territory that is large in size (identified by the empirical test). The meta-analysis showed that physiological costs such as energetic expenditure or stress were largely negligible in impact on territory holders. Species that used territories to monopolise access to mates appeared to incur the greatest costs, whereas those defending food resources experienced the least. The single largest gap in our current understanding revealed by the literature review is the potential cost associated with increased predation. There is also a clear need for multiple costs to be evaluated concurrently in a single species. The empirical component of this study showcases a powerful analytical framework for evaluating a range of hypotheses using correlational data obtained in the field. More broadly, this paper highlights key factors that should be considered in any investigation that attempts to account for the evolutionary origin or ecological variation in territorial behaviour within and between species.</p>

Maternal survival costs in an asocial mammal: Data and analysis

<p><strong>Abstract. </strong>Maternal characteristics, social dynamics, and environmental factors can all influence reproduction and survival as well as shape trade-offs that might arise between these components of fitness. Short-lived mammals like the golden-mantled ground squirrel (GMGS; <em>Callospermophilus lateralis</em>) tend to maximize effort towards current reproduction at the expense of survival but may be complicated by other aspects of the species' life history and environment.. Here, we use 25 years of data (1995-2020) collected from a population of GMGS at the Rocky Mountain Biological Research Laboratory in Gothic, Colorado, to test the effect of several maternal characteristics (e.g., age, experience, timing of litter emergence), social context (e.g., litter sex ratio, kin density), and environmental context (e.g., date of bare ground, length of vegetative growing season) on survival of reproductive female GMGS using Cox proportional hazard models. Our results indicated that social dynamics (i.e., density) and environmental conditions (i.e., standardized first day of permanent snow cover and length of growing season) explained significant variation in annual maternal survival, while maternal characteristics did not. A higher density of related breeding females and the total number of females (both related and unrelated to the focal mother) were associated with an increase in the mortality hazard. A later standardized date of the first day of permanent snow cover and a shorter growing season both reduced the maternal mortality hazard. Together, our results suggest that factors extrinsic to the squirrels affect maternal survival, and thus may also influence local population growth and dynamics in GMGS and other short-lived, territorial mammal species.</p>

Data from: Computer-aided X-ray screening for tuberculosis and HIV testing among adults with cough in Malawi (the PROSPECT study): a randomized trial and cost-effectiveness analysis

<p>Suboptimal tuberculosis (TB) diagnostics and HIV contribute to the high global burden of TB. We investigated costs and yield from systematic HIV-TB screening, including computer-aided digital chest X-ray (DCXR-CAD). We investigated costs and yield from systematic HIV-TB screening, including computer-aided digital chest X-ray (DCXR-CAD).</p> <p>In this open, three-arm randomised trial, adults (≥18 years) with cough attending acute primary services in Malawi were randomised (1:1:1) to standard-of-care (SOC); oral HIV testing (HIV screening) and linkage to care; or HIV testing and linkage to care plus DCXR-CAD with sputum Xpert for high CAD4TBv5 scores (HIV-TB screening). Participants and study staff were not blinded to intervention allocation, but investigator blinding was maintained until final analysis. The primary outcome was time to TB treatment. Secondary outcomes included proportion with same-day TB treatment; prevalence of undiagnosed/untreated bacteriologically-confirmed TB on day 56; and undiagnosed/untreated HIV. Analysis was done on an intention to treat basis. Cost-effectiveness analysis used a health-provider perspective. Between 15/11/2018-27/11/2019, 8236 were screened for eligibility, with 473, 492, and 497 randomly allocated to SOC, HIV, and HIV-TB screening arms; 53 (11%), 52 (9%), and 47 (9%) were lost to follow-up, respectively. At 56 days, TB treatment had been started in 5 (1.1%) SOC, 8 (1.6%) HIV-screening, and 15 (3.0%) HIV-TB screening participants. Median (IQR) time to TB treatment was 11 (6.5-38), 6 (1-22) and 1 (0-3) days (hazard ratio for HIV-TB vs. SOC: 2.86, 1.04-7.87), with same-day treatment of 0/5 (0%) SOC, 1/8 (12.5%) HIV, and 6/15 (40.0%) HIV-TB screening arm TB patients (p=0.03). At day 56, 2 SOC (0.5%), 4 HIV (1.0%), and 2 HIV-TB (0.5%) participants had undiagnosed microbiologically-confirmed TB. HIV screening reduced the proportion with undiagnosed or untreated HIV from 10 (2.7%) in the SOC arm to 2 (0.5%) in the HIV-screening arm (risk ratio [RR]: 0.18, 0.04-0.83), and 1 (0.2%) in the HIV-TB screening arm (RR: 0.09, 0.01-0.71). Incremental costs were US$3.58 and US$19.92 per participant screened for HIV and HIV-TB; the probability of cost-effectiveness at a US$1200/quality-adjusted life-year (QALY) threshold were 83.9% and 0%. Main limitations were the lower than anticipated prevalence of tuberculosis and short participant follow-up period; cost and quality of life benefits of this screening approach may accrue over a longer time horizon.</p> <p>DCXR-CAD with universal HIV screening significantly increased the timeliness and completeness of HIV and TB diagnosis. If implemented at scale this has potential to rapidly and efficiently improve TB and HIV diagnosis and treatment.</p>

Active and low-cost hyperspectral imaging for spectral analysis in low lighting environment

<p>Hyperspectral imaging can capture information beyond conventional RGB cameras; thus, it has many applications, such as material identification and spectral analysis. However, like many camera systems, most of the existing hyperspectral cameras are still passive imaging systems: they require external light sources to illuminate the objects to capture the spectral intensity. As a result, the collected images highly depend on the environment lighting, and the imaging system cannot function in a dark or low-lighting environment. This work develops a prototype system for active hyperspectral imaging, which actively emits different single-wavelength lights at different frequencies when imaging. This concept has several advantages: first, using the controlled lighting, the magnitude of the individual bands is normalized to extract reflectance information; second, the system is capable of collecting information at the desired spectral range by tailoring the light sources; third, an active system is mechanically easier to make, since it does not require complex band filters as used in passive systems; last, such a system may work under low light or dark environments, which greatly facilitate underground/subsurface sensing applications such as borehole based mining exploration. This prototype is achieved by using an array of low-cost and single-wavelength LED (Light Emitting Diode) lights, a remote control module controlling the LED illuminator, and the shutter of a full spectrum camera. We demonstrate that such design is feasible and could yield informative hyperspectral images for spectral analysis and machine learning-based object identification in low light or dark environments, having great potential to benefit both the academic and industry such as in geochemistry, earth science, subsurface energy, and mining.</p>

Calcium fortification of water during pregnancy for the prevention of preeclampsia in a low-income setting: a cost-effectiveness analysis

<p>This database contains the model and the parameters of the study. It&#39;s is important to highlight that this is the first version of the model, and thus modifications are forthcoming. With the current database, the abstract is the following:</p> <p>Fortification of water with calcium during pregnancy is proposed as a suitable and promising intervention to increase calcium intake and prevent preeclampsia and eclampsia (PE/E). However, the evidence of the cost-effectiveness of this type of intervention is scarce. We conducted a model-based cost-effectiveness analysis to estimate the incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) of calcium pills and bottled water fortified with calcium, compared to the standard of care (defined as the use of MgSO4 as the standard treatment for PE/E), in the context of Nepal. Outcome measures were years of life gained (YLG) by mothers and newborns and healthcare costs. We considered a lifetime time horizon and health benefits were discounted at 3%. The cost-effectiveness threshold was set at the 2019 Nepal gross domestic product per capita (USD 1071). For calcium pills versus standard of care, ICER was USD 63 per YLG. By switching from calcium pills to bottled water fortified with calcium, the resulting ICER was USD 1702 per YLG. In conclusion, the bottle of water fortified with calcium was found not cost-effective at the defined threshold for Nepal. Complementary economic evidence adapted to other low-and middle income contexts is required to guide novel preventive interventions to improve maternal and child health based on the efficiency principle</p>

Cognitive development among children in a low-income setting: cost-effectiveness analysis of a maternal nutrition education intervention in rural Uganda

<p><span>Inadequate nutrition and insufficient stimulation in early childhood can lead to long-term deficits in cognitive and social development. Evidence for policy and decision-making regarding the cost of delivering nutrition education is lacking in low and middle-income countries (LMIC). In rural Uganda, we conducted a cluster-randomized controlled trial (RCT) examining the effect of a maternal nutrition education intervention on developmental outcomes among children aged 6–8 months. This intervention led to significantly improved cognitive scores when the children reached the age of 20–24 months. When considering the potential for this intervention's future implementation, the desired effects should be weighed against the increased costs.</span><span> This study therefore aimed to assess the cost-effectiveness of this education intervention compared with current practice.</span><span> Health outcome data were based on the RCT. Cost data were collected via interviews with researchers involved in processing the intervention. This study considered a healthcare provider perspective for an 18-month time horizon.</span><span> The control group was considered as the current practice for the future large-scale implementation of this intervention. </span><span>A cost-effectiveness analysis was performed, including calculations of incremental cost-effectiveness ratios (ICERs). In addition, uncertainty in the results was characterized using one-way and probabilistic sensitivity analyses. The ICER for the education intervention compared with current practice was USD ($) 16.50 per cognitive composite score gained, with an incremental cost of </span><span>$265.79 and an incremental cognitive composite score of 16.11. The sensitivity analyses indicated the robustness of these results. The ICER was sensitive to changes in cognitive composite score and the cost of personnel, but the education intervention can be considered cost-effective compared with the current practice. The outcome of this study, including the cost analysis, health outcome, cost-effectiveness, and sensitivity analysis, can be useful to inform policymakers and stakeholders about effective resource allocation processes in Uganda and possibly other LMIC.</span></p>
