Data from: How much would it cost to monitor farmland biodiversity in Europe?
To evaluate progress on political biodiversity objectives, biodiversity monitoring provides information on whether intended results are being achieved. Despite scientific proof that monitoring and evaluation increase the (cost) efficiency of policy measures, cost estimates for monitoring schemes are seldom available, hampering their inclusion in policy programme budgets. Empirical data collected from 12 case studies across Europe were used in a power analysis to estimate the number of farms that would need to be sampled per major farm type to detect changes in species richness over time for four taxa (vascular plants, earthworms, spiders and bees). A sampling design was developed to allocate spatially, across Europe, the farms that should be sampled. Cost estimates are provided for nine monitoring scenarios with differing robustness for detecting temporal changes in species numbers. These cost estimates are compared with the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) budget (2014–2020) to determine the budget allocation required for the proposed farmland biodiversity monitoring. Results show that the bee indicator requires the highest number of farms to be sampled and the vascular plant indicator the lowest. The costs for the nine farmland biodiversity monitoring scenarios corresponded to 0·01%–0·74% of the total CAP budget and to 0·04%–2·48% of the CAP budget specifically allocated to environmental targets. Synthesis and applications. The results of the cost scenarios demonstrate that, based on the taxa and methods used in this study, a Europe-wide farmland biodiversity monitoring scheme would require a modest share of the Common Agricultural Policy budget. The monitoring scenarios are flexible and can be adapted or complemented with alternate data collection options (e.g. at national scale or voluntary efforts), data mobilization, data integration or modelling efforts.
Dataset for "Improving data quality of low-cost light-scattering PM sensors: Towards automatic air quality monitoring in urban environments"

The dataset contains the data used in the article "Improving data quality of low-cost light-scattering PM sensors: Towards automatic air quality monitoring in urban environments".

A low-cost monitoring system composed of 14 monitoring stations was positioned at the official monitoring station of Torino Rubino in the city of Turin (Italy). The official station is managed by the environmental agency ARPA Piemonte.

Each low-cost station contains four low-cost light-scattering PM sensors (Honeywell HPMA115S0-XXX), one temperature and relative humidity sensor (DHT22), and one atmospheric pressure sensor (BME/BMP280).
The sampling time of the PM sensors was set to one second, while the other sensors generated measurements every 3-4 seconds.

The official monitoring station uses both a gravimetric and a beta attenuation instrument for measuring PM.

The data contained in this dataset was collected from October 2020 to November 2021. It contains the PM2.5, relative humidity, and temperature measurements of the low-cost monitoring system and the official measurements of the beta attenuation device.

Measurements of low-cost sensors are expressed in UTC, while official measurements are expressed in UTC+1.

Official PM measurements can be also found at https://aria.ambiente.piemonte.it/qualita-aria/dati.

Data from: Development of low cost non-contact structural health monitoring system for rotating machinery
Condition monitoring systems are increasingly being employed in industrial applications to improve the availability of equipment to increase the overall equipment efficiency. Condition monitoring of gearboxes, a key element of rotating machines, ensures to continuously reduce and eliminate costs, unscheduled downtime and unexpected breakdowns. This study demonstrates a low cost microcontroller based non-contact data acquisition system for condition monitoring of rotating machinery. Experimental validation of the proposed system was carried out by performing examination tests on a gearbox test-rig. A user friendly Graphical User Interface (GUI) was also developed which facilitate user to perform signal processing in both real-time and offline mode. With these features the proposed system can perform most of the functions available in complex, standalone machines. The use of a general purpose PC and standard programming language makes the system simple, economical, and adaptable to a variety of problems. The tests show the developed system can perform properly as proposed.

Real-Time Early Detection and Monitoring of Flooding Using Low-Cost Highly Sensitive Ultrasound Sensing of Water Level

Flooding poses safety hazards to motorists, emergency and maintenance crews and may cause costly damage to transportation infrastructure and its operation. Flash flooding, in particular, causes the most flood-related deaths According to NOAA, in 2017 alone, flash flooding also caused $60.7 billion worth of economic damage. Low-water crossings are among the first places where deaths and significant damages to vehicles occur during flooding. With flash flooding, when a critical corridor is blocked by a high level of water, it affects the safety of the general public. To keep the critical corridors open as long as possible, and to minimize losses from flooding, accurate early detection of the rising water level is essential. The flood level detection system has to have flood stage maps in the geographic information system for the street-, roadway-, and critical-freight corridors. This area encompasses public roads in urbanized areas that provide access and connection to the primary roads for ports, public transportation or other transportation facilities. The main goal of this project is to develop cost-effective and high efficient solar-powered water level detection units and implement real-time water level monitoring for water both pavement and river stream. The project was performed with three objectives: to develop the low cost reliable real-time data of the ultrasound water level detection system, increasing its data reliability and resolution; 2) to improve an energy-saving processing system; and to deploy the ultrasound water level detection system and real-time monitoring system for water both pavement and river stream for safety measures. The obtained results and findings imply the developed monitoring system can present reliable water level data with efficient power and data transmission system.
