Ecological memory effects on plants and soils in early post-fire steppe, Barton Ecological Research Area, Pocatello, Idaho, 2021

In many regions of the world, wildfires are becoming more frequent due to the invasion of exotic grasses that are highly flammable and often replace native plants as burned landscapes regrow. To prevent invasive species from dominating post-burn landscapes, land managers are increasingly applying seeds of native plants to suppress invasive plants and encourage ecosystem recovery. However, there is still much to learn about the ability of seeded species to establish and suppress flammable invaders. It is also unclear how previous human-caused landscape changes, such as nitrogen pollution or the removal of shrubs (a common practice in western USA rangelands), affect the success of native seed additions and plant recovery from fire. This study addresses these issues by building on a long-term experiment investigating the legacy effects of past nitrogen pollution and shrub removal in a highly invaded sagebrush steppe ecosystem at Idaho State University’s Barton Ecological Research Area in Pocatello, ID. This experiment burned in a wildfire in August, 2020, providing a unique opportunity to evaluate how a history of nitrogen pollution and shrub removal influences plant recovery from wildfire. We developed three native seed mixes intended to suppress invasive plants, particularly flammable annual grasses, and in April, 2021, we sowed the experimental mixes into research plots within the original experiment. To measure the initial effects of the experimental seed additions and the legacy effects of previous nitrogen pollution and shrub removal, we collected the data provided here during the summer of 2021, the first growing season following the wildfire. We established 240 monitoring quadrats (1 m²) within the original experiment, dividing the quadrats between areas where shrubs had formerly been (evidenced by stumps) and intershrub areas. Continuous soil temperature measurements at 10 cm depth from 3 month-long deployments in summer and winter within the Georgia Coastal Ecosystems Long Term Ecological Research (GCE-LTER) site in 2017 and 2018

To understand the influence of marsh elevation and flooding on soil temperature in Spartina alterniflora marsh, we measured soil temperature at 10 cm depth along two transects that spanned a marsh edge to interior gradient. We then associated those measurements with elevation, creek water height and vegetation characteristics. Soil temperature was logged every 15 min with a Hobo Onset Tidbit Pendant Temperature probe in Spartina alterniflora-dominated marsh near the Georgia Coastal Ecosystems Long Term Ecological Research (GCE-LTER) eddy covariance flux tower. Measurements were collected along two transects of approximately 250 m in length from 18 plots (transect 1) or 20 plots (transect 2) and over 3 sample deployments of approximately 1 month in length: 27 Jul – 31 Aug 2017 (transect 1), 8 Jan – 13 Feb 2018 (transect 1) and 23 Aug – 18 Sep 2018 (transect 2). Plot elevations along each transect were measured with a Trimble R6 RTK after probes were installed in the marsh. Creek water heights were estimated with the pressure transducer associated with the GCE-LTER eddy covariance flux tower data. Spartina alterniflora height forms were measured for each sample station during August as the mean of all stem heights within 0.25 m quadrants centered over each soil probe location. While these data are 24 hr soil temperature measurements, during all three deployments, we found that daily mean soil temperature was negatively correlated with marsh elevation on the marsh platform during low tide conditions, which represented the majority of the observations.

Zooplankton and micronekton abundance using an Isaacs-Kidd Midwater trawl on Northeast U.S. Shelf Long Term Ecological Research (NES-LTER) Transect cruises, ongoing since 2023

During Northeast U.S. Shelf Long-Term Ecological Research (NES-LTER) Transect cruises, acoustic backscattering layers were identified using multifrequency echosounders and were targeted for collection of zooplankton and micronekton using an Isaacs-Kidd Midwater Trawl. On each cruise, trawling was conducted at at least three stations, including the one at the shelfbreak front, one inshore of the front, and one offshore of the front. The catches from the trawls were preserved on ship and later identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level using a dissecting microscope. Each identified taxon was counted to provide net total abundance by taxon. Trawling was initiated in spring 2023 and is ongoing.

The temperate coral <em>Cladocora&nbsp;caespitosa</em> is the only zooxanthellate coral with reef-building capacity in the Mediterranean Sea, a climate change hotspot with warming rates triple the global average. Over the past two decades, <em>C. caespitosa</em> populations have suffered severe mortality events associated with marine heatwaves (MHWs). However, with monitoring efforts beginning, at best, in the 2000s, the occurrence of MHWs before to that period, as well as the sub-lethal effects of these events remain poorly understood. Here we use sclerochronology to reconstruct the histories of past stress events and long-term sub-lethal effects on <em>C. caespitosa</em> in three locations within the NW Mediterranean Sea, each with different environmental conditions. Skeletal extension, density and calcification rates were compared to the <em>in situ</em> seawater temperature of each site to assess their relationship. Additionally, we assessed the occurrence of skeletal growth anomalies to reconstruct stress events between 1991 and 2021, a period that encompasses the onset and evolution of warming-related mass mortality events in the NW&nbsp;Mediterranean Sea. Our results reveal a positive association between calcification and temperature, following a latitudinal temperature gradient. However, the evolution of the likelihood distribution of growth rates in the warmest site (Columbretes Islands) since the 1990s indicates a decrease in linear extension and calcification rates during the most recent years. With the increase in the frequency of MHWs and growth anomalies during the last decade, this decline suggests a recurrence in physiological stress events. Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) Network Site Boundaries

This is a set of Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) site boundaries preserved as a shapefile. Note that for some sites “real” boundaries are included while others–particularly marine sites–use a simpler bounding box method. Each site is listed both with its three-letter abbreviation and its unabbreviated name. World Geodetic System 1984 (WGS84) is the coordinate reference system used (EPSG:4326). More information about any of the sites can be found on the LTER Site Profiles page on the LTER Network website (https://lternet.edu/site). This data product was made possible by the contributions of the Information Managers for the LTER sites, each of whom contributed their sites' boundaries. Ecological Forestry in Western Oregon: A Critical Analysis from Andrews Forest LTER Research, 2014-2015

This work highlights the normative dimensions of “ecological forestry,” a strategy of forest management that uses silviculture to mimic the effects of non-anthropogenic processes of disturbance and succession in order to meet multiple objectives on a single piece of land. An analysis of the arguments made about ecological forestry, both broadly theoretical and pertaining specifically to western Oregon, shows that empirical uncertainties and normative gaps need to be addressed before we can make a clear, well-reasoned decision about whether ecological forestry is a viable and appropriate strategy for forest management and conservation.

Relative percent cover of plant species was measured in ARC-LTER 1989 moist acidic tundra experimental plots. Treatments include Control (CT), Nitrogen Phosphorus (NP), Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), and Greenhouse Control (GHCT). In 1996 on unassigned plots, an experiment that manipulate herbivory presence and nutrients was started. Treatments include Control Unfenced (NFCT), Nitrogen Phosphorus Unfenced (NFNP), and Small Fenced Control (CTSF). Not all treatments were measured each year.

Map of ecological sites and ecological states for pastures 1, 4, 14, and 15 on the Chihuahuan Desert Rangeland Research Center, New Mexico

This data package includes an ArcMap geodatabase for the Chihuahuan Desert Rangeland Research Center (CDRRC) pastures 1, 4, 14, and 15: one polygon feature class, one point feature class, associated attribute tables and metadata. The spatial data, CDRRC1_4_14_15_StateMap_v1.gdb.zip, represents the ecological sites and states on Pastures 1, 4, 14 and 15 on the Chihuahuan Desert Rangeland Research Center, and includes field traverse data. CDRRC1_4_14_15_StateMapMetadata.pdf and TraversePointsMetadata.pdf contain the geospatial metadata provided by ArcMap. CDRRC1_4_14_15_StateMap_v1.csv is the attribute table associated with the state map’s polygon feature class, and TraversePoints.xlsx is the attribute table associated with the traverse points feature class and includes a sheet containing detailed attribute metadata.
