Data from: Rapid diversification associated with ecological specialization in Neotropical Adelpha butterflies
Rapid diversification is often associated with morphological or ecological adaptations that allow organisms to radiate into novel niches. Neotropical Adelpha butterflies, which comprise over 200 species and subspecies, are characterized by extraordinary breadth in host plant use and wing colour patterns compared to their closest relatives. To examine the relationship between phenotypic and species diversification, we reconstructed the phylogenetic history of Adelpha and its temperate sister genus Limenitis using genomewide restriction-site-associated DNA (RAD) sequencing. Despite a declining fraction of shared markers with increasing evolutionary distance, the RAD-Seq data consistently generated well-supported trees using a variety of phylogenetic methods. These well-resolved phylogenies allow the identification of an ecologically important relationship with a toxic host plant family, as well as the confirmation of widespread, convergent wing pattern mimicry throughout the genus. Taken together, our results support the hypothesis that evolutionary innovations in both larvae and adults have permitted the colonization of novel host plants and fuelled adaptive diversification within this large butterfly radiation.
Pollination ecology, specialization, and genetic isolation in sympatric bee pollinated Salvia (Lamiaceae)
<p><i>Premise of research.</i><i> </i>Previous pollination ecology studies in <i>Salvia</i> have shown that there is low specialization to certain subgroups of bees and that pollinator number varies with species and locality. We studied twelve <i>Salvia</i> species (three clades with different corolla morphologies and staminal lever mechanisms) which in part co-occur and co-flower to examine pre-zygotic isolation mechanisms and the degree of specialization vs. generalization in pollination ecology.</p> <p><span><i>Methodology.</i> Pollinators were identified using field observations, photos, and related literature across three sites in Turkey. Video documentation of the visitation rate and the site of pollen placement on the pollinator body, morphometric measurements between flowers and pollinators, flowering time, flower color, handling time, and stigma contact ratio were analyzed. Plant-pollinator networks were constructed.</span></p> <p><i>Pivotal results.</i> Mechanical, phenological, and ethological isolation occur among sympatric <i>Salvia</i> species. Morphological fit is evident between flower tube length and proboscis length of main pollinators. Pollinator networks indicate that most species are ecological generalists but only few are specialists.</p> <p><i>Conclusions.</i> The twelve <i>Salvia</i> species, though phenotypically and functionally specialized due to their zygomorphic-bilabiate flowers and bee pollination syndrome, differ in the degree of ecological specialization. Most of the sympatric <i>Salvia </i>species tend to be ecologically generalized with two or more main pollinators and a few additional secondary pollinators, while a few <i>Salvia </i>species are clearly specialized. Some floral traits (e.g., flower color, morphology, size, corolla tube length and width of corolla tube entrance, type and size of the staminal lever mechanism, small numbers of flowers in the inflorescence), short flowering time, and small population size appear correlated to the degree of ecological specialization.</p>

Ecological specialization and niche overlap of subterranean rodents inferred from DNA metabarcoding diet analysis
<p>Knowledge of how animal species use food resources available in the environment increases our understanding of ecological processes. However, obtaining this information using traditional methods is a hard task for species feeding on a large variety of food items in highly diverse environments. We amplified the DNA of plants for 306 scat and 40 soil samples, and applied an eDNA metabarcoding approach to investigate food preferences, degree of diet specialization and diet overlap of seven herbivore rodent species of the <i>Ctenomys</i> genus distributed in southern and midwestern Brazil.<b> </b>The metabarcoding approach revealed that species consume more than 60% of the plant families recovered in soil samples, indicating generalist feeding habits of ctenomyids. The Poaceae family was the most common food resource retrieved in scats of all species as well in soil samples. Niche overlap analysis indicated high overlap in the plant families and Molecular Operational Taxonomic Units consumed, mainly among the southern species.<b> </b>Interspecific difference in diet composition was influenced, among other factors, by the availability of resources in the environment. In addition, our results provide support for the hypothesis that the allopatric distributions of ctenomyids allow them to exploit the same range of resources when available, possibly because of the absence of interspecific competition.</p>
Data from: Ecological specialization in populations adapted to constant versus heterogeneous environments
Populations vary in their degree of ecological specialization. An intuitive, but often untested, hypothesis is that populations evolving under greater environmental heterogeneity will evolve to be less specialized. How important is environmental heterogeneity in explaining among-population variation in specialization? We assessed juvenile viability of 20 Drosophila melanogaster populations evolving under one of four regimes: (i) a salt-enriched environment, (ii) a cadmium-enriched environment, (iii) a temporally varying environment, and (iv) a spatially varying environment. Juvenile viability was tested in both the original selective environments and a set of novel environments. In both the original and novel environments, populations from the constant cadmium regime had the lowest average viability and the highest variance in viability across environments but populations from the other three regimes were similar. Our results suggest that variation in specialization among these populations is most simply explained as a pleiotropic by-product of adaptation to specific environments rather than resulting from a history of exposure to environmental heterogeneity.
