Riparian Evapotranspiration (ET) Study (SEON) from the Middle Rio Grande River Bosque, New Mexico (1999-2011): Energy Balance Data
This study originated with the objective of parameterizing riparian evapotranspiration (ET) in the water budget of the Middle Rio Grande. We hypothesized that flooding and invasions of non-native species would strongly impact ecosystem water use. Our objectives were to measure and compare water use of native (Rio Grande cottonwood, Populus deltoides ssp. wizleni) and non-native (saltcedar, Tamarix chinensis & Russian olive, Eleagnus angustifolia) vegetation and to evaluate how water use is affected by climatic variability resulting in high river flows and flooding as well as drought conditions and deep water tables. Eddy covariance flux towers to measure ET and shallow wells to monitor water tables were instrumented in 1999. Active sites in their second decade of monitoring include a xeroriparian, non-flooding salt cedar woodland within Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) and a dense, monotypic salt cedar stand at Bosque del Apache NWR, which is subject to flood pulses associated with high river flows. These data are energy balance data collected as part of this study.
Better together? how intergroup associations affect energy balance and feeding behavior in wild bonobos
<p>When the benefits of interacting with out-group members exceed the associated costs, social groups may be expected to be tolerant towards each other. However, in many species exhibiting intergroup tolerance, the nature of benefits gained from intergroup encounters remains unclear. We investigated the potential costs and benefits associated with intergroup associations in bonobos, a species with varying degrees of intergroup tolerance, by testing whether these associations conferred energetic benefits to participants under different socioecological contexts, and whether the consequences of these associations substantially differed from within-group competition. We used measures of socioecological factors (i.e. fruit abundance and group size), feeding and ranging behaviors, and a physiological marker of energy balance (i.e. urinary c-peptides of insulin) collected over a 19-month period from two neighboring wild communities in the Kokolopori Bonobo Reserve, DRC. We found that intergroup associations did not affect individuals' energy balance, but they did alter individuals' ranging and feeding behavior. Specifically, bonobos travelled longer distances, visited larger fruit patches, and increased the time spent feeding on fruits on days they associated with the neighboring group. These adaptations in feeding behavior may be strategies to offset the energetic costs of increased travel distances. In the absence of obvious energetic benefits and with clear strategies employed to offset energetic costs, it is likely that intergroup associations in bonobos provide benefits unrelated to energy acquisition, such as social benefits. Our study sheds light on the potential incentives promoting social networks to extend beyond and across groups in a tolerant species.</p>
Data from: Geographic variation of body size in new world anurans: energy and water in a balance
The validity of Bergmann's rule, perhaps the best known ecogeographical rule, has been questioned for ectothermic species. Here, we explore the interspecific version of the rule documenting body size gradients for anurans across the whole New World and evaluating which environmental variables best explain the observed patterns. We assembled a dataset of body sizes for 2761 anuran species of the Western Hemisphere and conducted assemblage-based and cross-species analyses that consider the spatial and phylogenetic structure in the data. In accordance with heat and water-related explanations for body size clines, we found a consistent association of median body size and potential evapotranspiration across the New World. A relevant role of water availability also emerges, suggesting the joint importance of body size for thermoregulation and hydroregulation in anurans. Anurans do not follow a simple Bergmannian pattern of increasing size towards high latitudes. Consistent with previous regional findings, our Hemisphere-wide analyses detect that the geographic variation in anuran body sizes is highly dependent on a trade-off between heat and water balance. The observed size-climate relationships possibly emerge from the interplay between thermoregulatory abilities and the benefits inherent to reduced surface-to-volume ratios in larger species, which decrease the rates of evaporative water loss and favour heat retention. Our results also show how temperature becomes important for species that are directly in contact with the substrate and water, like burrowing and terrestrial anurans, while arboreal species exhibit a body size cline linked with potential evapotranspiration.

<p>This folder contains data, model input files, model executable and source code required to reproduce results in the paper:"Evaluating a coupled phenology – surface energy balance model to understand stream – subsurface temperature dynamics in a mixed-use farmland catchment" by Han Qiu, Phillip Blaen, Sophie Comer-Warner, David M. Hannah, Stefan Krause and Mantha S. Phanikumar (Water Resources Research).</p> <p>The catchment (referred to herein as Wood Brook, Mill Brook, Mill Haft, BIFOR) is a mixed-use farmland catchment in central England. The "Data" folder contains information needed to create model input files. The "Figures" folder contains MS excel files with observed data (streamflows, groundwater heads, stream, streambed and groundwater temperatures etc) and simulation results to recreate the figures in the WRR paper. The other three folders contain model inputs, outputs and source code.</p>
