Data from: Limits to environmental masking of genetic quality in sexual signals

There is considerable debate over the value of male sexual ornaments as signals of genetic quality. Studies alternately report that environmental variation enhances or diminishes the genetic signal, or leads to crossover where genotypes perform well in one environment but poorly in another. A unified understanding is lacking. We conduct a novel experimental test examining the dual effects of distinct categories of genetic (inbred versus crossed parental lines) and environmental quality (low, through high to extreme larval food stress) on a condition-dependent male ornament. We find that differences in genetic quality signalled by the ornament (male eyespan in Diasemopsis meigenii stalk-eyed flies) become visible and are amplified under high stress but are overwhelmed in extreme stress environments. Variance among independent genetic lines increases with environmental stress in both genetic quality classes, but at a slower rate in high quality outcrossed flies. Individual genetic lines generally maintain their ranks across environments, except among high quality lines under low environmental stress, where low genetic variance among lines precludes differentiation between ranks. Our results provide a conceptual advance, demonstrating a unified pattern for how genetic and environmental quality interact. They show when environmental conditions lead to the amplification of differences in signals of genetic quality and thereby enhance the potential indirect genetic benefits gained by female mate choice.

Social rank modulates how environmental quality influences cooperation and conflict within animal societies

Although dominance hierarchies occur in most societies, our understanding of how these power structures influence individual investment in cooperative and competitive behaviors remains elusive. Both conflict and cooperation in animal societies are often environmentally-regulated, yet how individuals alter their cooperative and competitive investments as environmental quality changes remains unclear. Using game theoretic modeling, we predict that individuals of all ranks will invest more in cooperation and less in social conflict in harsh environments than individuals of the same ranks in benign environments. Counterintuitively, low ranking subordinates should increase their investment in cooperation proportionally more than high ranking dominants, suggesting that subordinates contribute relatively more when facing environmental challenges. We then test and confirm these predictions experimentally using the Asian burying beetle Nicrophorus nepalensis. Ultimately, we demonstrate how social rank modulates the relationships between environmental quality and cooperative and competitive behaviours, a topic crucial for understanding the evolution of complex societies.

Data from: Relative contributions of offspring quality and environmental quality to adult field performance

Determinants of adult performance, such as growth and survival, are influenced by extrinsic, environmental and intrinsic, phenotypic factors. The relative importance of extrinsic and intrinsic factors, while ecologically relevant, is rarely estimated simultaneously. We estimate the relative contributions of offspring size (intrinsic) and various environmental factors (extrinsic) on adult performance in the marine colonial bryozoan Watersipora subtorquata. We used a variance partitioning approach for both new and previously published data, enabling us to examine the performance of over 1000 individuals in the field. We found offspring size to explain relatively little variation in adult performance. Of the environmental factors taken to account, temporal variation and an environmental gradient had the strongest influences.

Data from: Environmental quality predicts optimal egg size in the wild

Parents can maximize their reproductive success by balancing the trade-off between investment per offspring and fecundity. According to theory, environmental quality influences the relationship between investment per offspring and offspring fitness, such that well-provisioned offspring fare better when environmental quality is lower. A major prediction of classic theory, then, is that optimal investment per offspring will increase as environmental quality decreases. To test this prediction, we release over 30,000 juvenile Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) into eight wild stream environments, and we monitor subsequent growth and survival of juveniles. We estimate the shape of the relationship between investment per offspring (egg size) and offspring fitness in each stream. We find that optimal egg size is greater when the quality of the stream environment is lower (as estimated by a composite index of habitat quality). Across streams, the mean size of stream gravel and the mean amount of incident sunlight are the most important individual predictors of optimal egg size. Within streams, juveniles recaptured in stream subsections that featured larger gravels and greater levels of sunlight also grew relatively quickly, an association that complements our cross-stream analyses. This study provides the first empirical verification that environmental quality alters the relationship between investment per offspring and offspring fitness, such that optimal investment per offspring increases as environmental quality decreases.

Data from: Resolving the paradox of environmental quality and sociality: the ecological causes and consequences of cooperative breeding in two lineages of birds

Cooperatively breeding animals occur in virtually every ecosystem on earth. Comparative and biogeographic studies suggest that that both benign and harsh, as well as stable and fluctuating, environments can favor the evolution of cooperative breeding behavior. The fact that cooperative societies occur in environments of such contrasting quality creates a paradox of environmental quality and sociality. The dual-benefits framework—which leads to the prediction that the ecological consequences of sociality (e.g. range size) vary depending on the benefits that individuals of each species receive by forming social groups—offers a potential resolution to this paradox. Here, we use a case study of two avian lineages, starlings (Sturnidae) and hornbills (Bucerotidae), in which environmental unpredictability appears to have opposite effects on the evolution of cooperation to test the dual-benefits framework. Consistent with previous work, harsh and unpredictable environments promote cooperative breeding behavior in starlings, which in turn leads to larger geographic ranges. However, cooperatively breeding hornbills occur in benign and stable environments, but sociality does not influence range size. Our study suggests that the paradox of environmental quality and sociality arises largely because cooperative breeding is an umbrella term, encompassing social species that form groups for different reasons. Differentiating between these reasons that social groups form is crucial for developing a predictive framework for understanding the evolution of cooperative breeding behavior.

Supplemental Material: Effects of Environmental Sustainability Enhancing Architectural Patterns and Tactics on different Quality Attributes

<p>These are the additional resources to the thesis with the same title.</p> <p>Context: Environmental sustainability is increasingly vital amid global challenges,<br>as IT presents both solutions and threats to the environment. Integrating environ-<br>mental sustainability into software engineering practices is essential, necessitating a<br>comprehensive understanding of environmental sustainability design decisions and<br>how they impact sustainability and other quality attributes within software architec-<br>tures.<br>Objectives: This research aims to address two primary objectives: firstly, to elicit environ-<br>mental sustainability scenarios and patterns and tactics from domain experts, and secondly,<br>to assess the tradeoffs of these design decisions in the context of a case study. Through qual-<br>itative insights garnered from a workshop and quantitative analysis via experiments, this<br>study seeks to offer nuanced insights into these tradeoffs.<br>Methodology: Utilizing a case study approach in collaboration with an industrial partner,<br>this work employs a combination of qualitative and quantitative analysis methods.<br>Qualitative insights are gathered through an Architecture Tradeoff Analysis Method<br>(ATAM) workshop with industrial partners, aimed at eliciting environmental sustainability<br>scenarios, design decisions, and their tradeoffs. Afterward, quantitative experiments<br>are conducted based on the workshop results using the Goal-Question-Metric (GQM)<br>approach, to measure the impact of environmental sustainability design decisions on<br>specific quality attributes in a mock implementation based on the industrial partner&rsquo;s<br>system.<br>Results: We were able to capture eight environmental sustainability scenarios and<br>patterns and tactics and tradeoffs for five of them during the workshop. In the ex-<br>periments we implemented two tactics, expecting them to negatively impact the per-<br>formance. The experimentation provided empirical data, revealing nuanced insights,<br>sometimes contradicting initial hypotheses, highlighting the importance of empirical<br>validation.<br>Conclusion: This study underscores the complexity of balancing environmental sustain-<br>ability with other quality attributes in software design. It emphasizes the complementary<br>role of qualitative and quantitative analysis in understanding tradeoffs and making informed<br>decisions. By integrating insights from both approaches, this research contributes to ad-<br>vancing discussions on sustainability in software engineering, benefiting both researchers<br>and practitioners. Continued collaboration between academia and industry is crucial for<br>furthering sustainable software engineering practices.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>

Data from: Individual quality and age but not environmental or social conditions modulate costs of reproduction in a capital breeder

Costs associated with reproduction are widely known to play a role in the evolution of reproductive tactics with consequences to population and eco-evolutionary dynamics. Evaluating these costs as they pertain to species in the wild remains an important goal of evolutionary ecology. Individual heterogeneity, including differences in individual quality (i.e., among-individual differences in traits associated with survival and reproduction) or state, and variation in environmental and social conditions can modulate the costs of reproduction; however, few studies have considered effects of these factors simultaneously. Taking advantage of a detailed, long-term dataset for a population of feral horses (Sable Island, Nova-Scotia, Canada), we address the question of how intrinsic (quality, age), environmental (winter severity, location), and social conditions (group size, composition, sex ratio, density) influence the costs of reproduction on subsequent reproduction. Individual quality was measured using a multivariate analysis on a combination of four static and dynamic traits expected to depict heterogeneity in individual performance. Female quality and age interacted with reproductive status of the previous year to determine current reproductive effort, while no effect of social or environmental covariates was found. High quality females showed higher probabilities of giving birth and weaning their foal regardless of their reproductive status the previous year, while those of lower quality showed lower probabilities of producing foals in successive years. Middle-aged (prime) females had the highest probability of giving birth when they had not reproduced the year before but no such relationship with age was found among females that had reproduced the previous year, indicating that prime-aged females bear higher costs of reproduction. We show that individual quality and age were key factors modulating the costs of reproduction in a capital breeder but that environmental or social conditions were not, highlighting the importance of considering multiple factors when studying costs of reproduction.
