Marcell Experimental Forest 30-minute resolution meteorological data, 2006 - ongoing

This data publication contains 30-minute meteorological data collected from 2006 - ongoing at the Marcell Experimental Forest (MEF) in Itasca County, Minnesota, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station. Air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and direction, photosynthetic photon flux density, soil temperature, and soil volumetric water content were measured at three meteorological monitoring stations. One station is in an upland clearing, one is under an upland forest canopy, and the third is in a peatland.

Plant Pollinator data at HJ Andrews Experimental Forest, 2011 to 2021

Despite the importance of plant-pollinator interactions for ecological communities, few long-term observational studies have been conducted of plant-pollinator networks. This study involves the annual collection of plant-pollinator interaction data from up to 18 meadows in the Willamette National Forest, Oregon, including 12 meadows in the HJ Andrews Forest. This study addresses how meadow size, the amount of nearby meadow habitat, weather, degree days, and soil moisture are related to the flowering of meadow plants and the frequency of plant-pollinator interactions.

Hourly weather data from the Arctic LTER Moist Acidic Tussock Experimental plots from 2011 to present, Toolik Filed Station, North Slope, Alaska.

Hourly weather data from the LTER Moist Acidic Tussock Experimental plots. The station was installed in 1990 in block 2 of the Toolik LTER experimental moist acidic tussock plots. The plots are located on a hillside near Toolik Lake (68 38' N, 149 36'W). Global solar radiation, photosynthetic active radiation, unfrozen precipitation, air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, and wind direction are measured at 3 meters. Additional sensors in greenhouses and shade houses plots measure air temperature, relative humidity and photosynthetic active radiation during the growing season. The sensors are read every minute and averaged or totaled every hour.

Eight Mile Lake Research Watershed, Carbon in Permafrost Experimental Heating Research (CiPEHR): Half-hourly growing season, chamber-based, CO2 flux data, 2009-2021

The Carbon in Permafrost Experimental Heating Research (CiPEHR) project addresses the following questions: 1) Does ecosystem warming cause a net release of C from the ecosystem to the atmosphere?, 2) Does the decomposition of old C, that comprises the bulk of the soil C pool, influence ecosystem C loss?, and 3) How do winter and summer warming alone, and in combination, affect ecosystem C exchange? We are answering these questions using a combination of field and laboratory experiments to measure ecosystem carbon balance and radiocarbon isotope ratios at a warming experiment located in an upland tundra field site near Healy, Alaska in the foothills of the Alaska Range. This data contains CO2 fluxes measured using an automated chamber system that measures net ecosystem CO2 exchange (NEE). Measurements are made every ~1.5 hours and modeled half-hourly. Half hour ecosystem respiration is modeled using an exponential Q10 relationship when light conditions are low (PAR<5umol/m2/s) and using a hyperbolic light relationship when PAR>5umol/m2/s. GPP is calculated as the difference between NEE and Reco.

This drying and warming experiment addresses the following questions: 1) Does ecosystem drying, warming and permafrost thaw cause a net release or uptake of C from the ecosystem to the atmosphere?, 2) Does the decomposition of old C that comprises the bulk of the soil C pool influence ecosystem C loss? 3) How do drying and warming affect plant communities and ecosystem properties? We are answering these questions using a combined warming and drying experiment (DryPEHR), which is situated with the Carbon in Permafrost Experimental Heating Research (CiPEHR) project and located in an upland tundra field site near Healy, Alaska in the foothills of the Alaska Range. Warming treatment here refers to growing season air temperature warming (~1C) using open top chambers (OTC) combined with soil 'warming' using snow fences during the snow covered months. Drying is achieved using an automated pumping system that lowers the water table in the dry plots. Soil warming began in 2008; OTCs and drying in 2011. This data set includes measured values of CO2 fluxes during the growing season.

Mark-recapture data of the Northern Spring Salamander (Gyrinophilus porphyriticus), Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, 2012 – present

This data set includes spatially explicit mark-recapture data of the Northern Spring Salamander (Gyrinophilus porphyriticus) collected during the summer months (June – August) from downstream and upstream reaches in multiple streams in the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest. Downstream reaches begin at the confluence with the Main Hubbard and extend upstream 500 meters and upstream reaches begin at the weir and extend downstream 500 meters. Downstream reaches contain brook trout and upstream reaches do not. We used a robust design framework with approximately 9 surveys per reach each summer (3 primary occasions with 3 secondary occasions each). Salamanders were captured by hand and marked with either Visual Implant Elastomer and/or a PIT tag. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station. Tree Seed Data at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, 1993 - ongoing

Tree seeds sorted and counted from long-term reference area litter traps are presented for 1993 until the present. These data are part of the LTER funded quantification of tree annual productivity. Our focal species for seed counts have been sugar maple, American beech and white ash. This data set allows comparison between seed production in reference sites (BB and TF) and the calcium addition watershed (W1) for these species. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.

Data and code from Artificial light at night increases top-down pressure on caterpillars: experimental evidence from a light-naive forest - 2021-2022

(https://doi.org/10.1098/rspb.2023.0153) Artificial light at night (ALAN) is a globally widespread and expanding form of anthropogenic change that impacts arthropod biodiversity. ALAN alters interspecific interactions between arthropods, including predation and parasitism. Despite their ecological importance as prey and hosts, the impact of ALAN on larval arthropod stages, such as caterpillars, is poorly understood. We examined the hypothesis that ALAN increases top-down pressure on caterpillars from arthropod predators and parasitoids. We experimentally illuminated study plots with moderate levels (10-15 lux) of LED lighting at light-naive Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, New Hampshire. We measured and compared between experimental and control plots: 1) predation on clay caterpillars and 2) abundance of arthropod predators and parasitoids. We found that predation rates on clay caterpillars and abundance of arthropod predators and parasitoids were significantly higher on ALAN treatment plots relative to control plots. These results suggest that moderate levels of ALAN increases top-down pressure on caterpillars. We did not test mechanisms, but sampling data indicates that increased abundance of predators near lights may play a role. This study highlights the importance of examining the effects of ALAN on both adult and larval life stages and suggests potential consequences of ALAN on arthropod populations and communities. Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest: Data in support of Territory sizes and patterns of habitat use by forest passerines over five decades: Ideal free or ideal despotic?, Zammarelli et al.

In this study, we analyzed territory sizes of seven migratory songbirds occupying a 10-hectare plot in the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, New Hampshire, USA over a 52-year period (1969-2021). All species varied in abundance over the duration of the study, some dramatically. Changes in territory sizes were inversely related to changes in abundance within the study plot despite differences in habitat preference, supporting the ideal free distribution. Territory sizes varied two-fold within a year across species. Results contribute to understanding how variation in territory size relates to 1) how habitat use changes with bird abundance, 2) the evolution of territory size, and 3) the role of territoriality in population dynamics. This dataset includes data, R code, and spatial files supporting this study. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). Fine Litterfall Data at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, 1992 - ongoing

Fine litterfall (leaves, twigs, fruits, seeds, etc.) is collected in Watershed 1, Watershed 5, the Throughfall plots and the Bear Brook Watershed reference forest, located to the west of Watershed 6, to quantify carbon and nutrient flux associated with this important pathway. These measurements have facilitated quantification of ice storm effects and species declines (paper birch, sugar maple). These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). Coarse Litterfall Data at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, 1996 - ongoing

Coarse litterfall (woody litter greater than 2 cm diameter) was collected from cleared plots in the same sites as fine litterfall to quantify total aboveground litterfall in the reference forest. These collections are for quantifying CWD inputs from live standing trees rather than all CWD inputs. Tree mortality and fall rates are used for dead tree inputs. All together these data are used to calculate aboveground production and forest carbon and nutrient budgets. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.

Standard meteorology and ancillary data from the Tromble Weir experimental watershed tower at the Jornada Basin LTER site, 2010-ongoing

This data package contains 30-minute standard meteorology and ancillary data collected at an eddy covariance tower in the Tromble Weir Watershed area of the Jornada Basin in southern New Mexico, USA. These data are used to quantify the water and energy balances in a small experimental watershed, including observational studies to calculate groundwater recharge as a water balance residual, to build relations between soil moisture state and ET flux, and to quantify land-atmosphere interactions and improve our understanding of the eddy covariance method. Additionally, they have been used in modeling studies as a validation of model performance. This file presents the ancillary data collected at the eddy covariance tower, excluding the 20Hz flux measurements that are archived at AmeriFlux (site US-Jo2; http://ameriflux.lbl.gov/sites/siteinfo/US-Jo2). This includes soil moisture and temperature at 4 depths, air temperature and pressure, humidity and vapor pressure, ground heat flux, incoming and outgoing longwave and shortwave radiation, photosynthetically active radiation for a subset of the study period, and surface soil temperature. Instrument descriptions and detailed procedures are found in the references listed in the Methods section of this package. This is an ongoing dataset that will be updated annually.

The included data were verified and transcribed directly from the original paper data sheets and have undergone quality control and assurance procedures different than those in place at NOAA. These data therefore differ from those directly downloadable from NOAA servers. Local verification and transcription of observations from the data sheets ceased in 2006 and data are now directly entered to the NOAA system. Therefore, this dataset is complete and will no longer be added to. This data package contains locally verified monthly total pan evaporation data from a NOAA National Weather Service station located at the USDA Jornada Experimental Range headquarters in southern New Mexico, USA. The evaporation pan measurements commenced in 1953 and ended in 1979 when the instrument was decommissioned. Pan evaporation observations were made using standard U.S. climatological service instrumentation and procedures. The included data were verified and transcribed directly from records retrieved from NOAA in ~1995 and have since undergone quality control and assurance procedures different than those in place at NOAA. These data therefore differ from those directly downloadable from NOAA servers. There is no further data from this decommissioned instrument, so this dataset is now complete and data will no longer be updated here. All observations from this weather station have also undergone NOAA QA/QC procedures and those data are available by accessing the Jornada Experimental Range, NM US GHCN station through the National Climatic Data Center portal (https://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/cdo-web/datasets/GSOM/stations/GHCND:USC00294426/detail - monthly pan evaporation data are available back to 1930, but there may be data issues prior to 1953).
