The Interaction between Competition and Predation: A Meta-analysis of Field Experiments

Ecologists working with a range of organisms and environments have carried out manipulative field experiments that enable us to ask questions about the interaction between competition and predation (including herbivory) and about the relative strength of competition and predation in the field. Evaluated together, such a collection of studies can offer insight into the importance and function of these factors in nature. Therefore, this dataset was created by combining the results of 20 articles reporting on 39 published field experiments on the interaction between competition and predation. These experiments tested whether the presence of predators affects the intensity of competitive effects. The combined data was then analyzed using a factorial meta-analysis technique, the results of which were published in the study titled The Interaction between Competition and Predation: A Meta‐analysis of Field Experiments (Gurevitch et al., 2000).

Does land-use history facilitate non-native plant invasion? A field experiment with Celastrus orbiculatus in the Bent Creek Experimental Forest in the southern Appalachians from 2008 to 2009

Although historic land use is often implicated in non-native plant invasion of forests, little is known about how land-use legacies might actually facilitate invasion. The researchers conducted a 2-year field seeding experiment in western North Carolina, USA, to compare germination and first-year seedling survival of Celastrus orbiculatus Thunb. in stands that had been cultivated and abandoned a century earlier and were dominated by tulip poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera L.), and in paired stands that had never been cultivated and were dominated by oaks (Quercus spp.). Experiments were conducted at five sites with paired tulip poplar and oak stands by varying litter mass (none, low, or high) and litter type (tulip poplar or oak).

Nutrient data from the Peat Collapse-Saltwater Intrusion Field Experiment from brackish and freshwater sites within Everglades National Park, Florida (FCE LTER), collected from October 2014 to September 2016

With sea level rise increasing, saltwater intrusion into low-lying coastal wetlands is likely to occur. We simulated saltwater intrusion into an Everglades marsh through monthly additions of elevated salinity water. Monthly porewater nutrients were taken at 15 cm depth from a brackish and a freshwater marsh. Porewater physicochemistry was measured 24 hours after dosing. Collection occurred from Oct 2014 - Sep 2016. The collected water was then analyzed for temperature, conductivity, salinity, pH, alkalinity, chloride, DOC, NH4, SO4, TDN, SRP, TDP, and sulfide. Leaf nutrient and root biomass data from the Peat Collapse-Saltwater Intrusion Field Experiment within Everglades National Park (FCE), collected from October 2014 to September 2016

This study examines the impact of communication on public good provisioning in an artefactual field experiment conducted with 216 villagers from small, rural communities in northern Namibia. In line with previous experimental findings, we observe a strong increase in cooperation when face-to-face communication is allowed before decision-making. We additionally introduce a condition in which participants cannot discuss the dilemma but talk to their group members about an unrelated topic prior to learning about the<br>public good game. It turns out that this condition already leads to higher cooperation rates, albeit not as high as in&nbsp;the condition in which discussions about the social dilemma are possible. The setting in small communities also allows investigating the effects of pre-existing social relationships between group members and their interaction with communication.We find that both types of communication are primarily effective among socially more distant group members, which suggests that communication and social ties work as substitutes in increasing cooperation. Further analyses rule out better comprehension of the game and increased mutual expectations of one&rsquo;s group members&rsquo; contributions as drivers for the communication effect. Finally, we discuss the role of personal and injunctive norms to keep commitments made during discussions.</p>

TVC Experiment 2018/19: Snow field measurements

<p><span>This dataset contains in situ snow measurements recorded as part of Environment and Climate Change Canada's 2018-2019 Trail Valley Creek Snow Experiment (TVC Experiment 18/19). These measurements were collected to evaluate coincident airborne and satellite radar measurements to better understand snow-radar interactions in a tundra environment. The measurements were recorded 50 km north of the town of Inuvik, Northwest Territories around the Trail Valley Creek research station (https://www.trailvalleycreek.ca/). Three periods of measurement took place in November 2018, January 2019, and March 2019 . Measurements and observations were recorded in handwritten snow pit sheets before being transcribed to electronic sheets. The dataset is organized by surveyed site and includes: 1) manual snowpit measurements of the following parameters: Total snow depth, vertical profiles of snow temperature, snow density, stratigraphy and grain size and notes on site characteristics and environmental conditions. 2) distributed snow depth measurements around the surveyed sites recorded with an automatic snow depth probe (magnaprobe), 3) SnowMicroPenetrometer (SMP) force profiles coincident with the snowpit measurements and distributed along the magnaprobe transects with its metadata file, and 4) snow microstructure profiles measuring specific surface area (SSA) using the IceCube instrument.</span></p>

Seismic source location with a match field processing approach during the RESOLVE dense seismic array experiment on the Glacier d'Argentiere

<p>This deposit contains the data set we used in our paper &lsquo;<em>Dynamic imaging of glacier structures at high-resolution using source localization with a dense seismic array</em>&rsquo;. The paper is in review for GRL and a preprint can be found here: <a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.1002/essoar.10507953.1">10.1002/essoar.10507953.1</a>.</p> <p>The dataset present here contains 34 files named &lsquo;<strong>beam_15423_jd***.h5</strong>&rsquo;. These files correspond to the output of the matched field processing for each day. They are in .h5 format and we provide a matlab code (<strong>read_MFP_data.m</strong>) to read these files. These files can be read with any other language since they are in . h5.</p> <p>In linux you can use <strong>h5dump &ndash;A filename.h5</strong> and you can see the content of each files.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>More information on how the MFP process is conducted can be found in on the <a href="https://lecoinal.gricad-pages.univ-grenoble-alpes.fr/resolve/">website </a>dedicated to this aspect or on our paper. <p>Underlying data of soil measurements and analysis by TUC team for&nbsp;&nbsp;the publication&nbsp;&ldquo;The Impact of Soil-Improving Cropping Practices on Erosion Rates: A Stakeholder-Oriented Field Experiment Assessment&rdquo; <a href="https://doi.org/10.3390/land10090964">https://doi.org/10.3390/land10090964</a> from the&nbsp;SoilCare project study sites in Crete.&nbsp;</p> <p>Abstract:</p> <p>The risk of erosion is particularly high in Mediterranean areas, especially in areas that are subject to a not so effective agricultural management&ndash;or with some omissions&ndash;, land abandonment or wildfires. Soils on Crete are under imminent threat of desertification, characterized by loss of vegetation, water erosion, and subsequently, loss of soil. Several large-scale studies have estimated average soil erosion on the island between 6 and 8 Mg/ha/year, but more localized investigations assess soil losses one order of magnitude higher. An experiment initiated in 2017, under the framework of the SoilCare H2020 EU project, aimed to evaluate the effect of different management practices on the soil erosion. The experiment was set up in control versus treatment experimental design including different sets of treatments, targeting the most important cultivations on Crete (olive orchards, vineyards, fruit orchards). The minimum-to-no tillage practice was adopted as an erosion mitigation practice for the olive orchard study site, while for the vineyard site, the cover crop practice was used. For the fruit orchard field, the crop-type change procedure (orange to avocado) was used. The experiment demonstrated that soil-improving cropping techniques have an important impact on soil erosion, and as a result, on soil water conservation that is of primary importance, especially for the Mediterranean dry regions. The demonstration of the findings is of practical use to most stakeholders, especially those that live and work with the local land.</p>

Comparing the route-choice behavior of pedestrians around obstacles in a virtual experiment and a field study

<p>There is a great controversy about the application of virtual experiment in pedestrian routing behavior research. We conducted field observations and virtual experiment to study the route choice behavior of pedestrians. The route choice behavior around obstacles are compared qualitatively. The results shows that distance to the exit routes as well as the density around the exits show great influence on the pedestrians&#39; route choice behavior while the speed of frontal pedestrians shows no obvious impact on the route choice. Pedestrians prefer to choose local closer exit or the exit with less occupants. The results of logistic regression show that the similar results can be obtained in virtual experiment and field observation qualitatively. This work can verify the validity of the virtual experiment for studying route choice behavior of pedestrians, which is of great importance for the application of virtual experiment.</p> <p>The files are trajectories of the recorded videos in the field observation.</p>
