What Do Firms Say in Reporting on Impacts of Climate Change? An Approach to Monitoring ESG Actions and Environmental Policy

This paper focuses on two research questions arising from the 2010 U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Advisory on climate change reporting: (1) How does the discussion of climate change in SEC filings change after the Advisory? and (2) What are firms talking about when they talk about climate change?
Findings were obtained from the 218,000 10-K filings to the SEC during the 2000--2019 period. The study develops and applies text mining methodology based on extracting information from the ``semantic associates'' in the ``neighborhoods'' of indicative terms. On (1) it finds that climate change-related reporting does increase substantially after the SEC guidance. On (2) a nuanced picture emerges. Firms with comparatively larger transition risks tend to discuss climate change comparatively more, focusing on regulation-related topics. Firms exposed to the physical risks of climate change tend to discuss climate change somewhat less, focusing on meteorological topics. The results enrich our understanding regarding environmental policies and firms' behaviors regarding climate change. Theoretical and practical implications are provided.

The impact of top management team tenure heterogeneity on declining firm's innovation efficiency

A firm maybe experiences a flourishing or declining period, and it also probably survives or even dies in future. Most firms have experienced decline in their development process. The impact of demand contraction and COVID-19 has caused more firms to face decline. Under the dilemma of resources reduction and recovery, the declining firm pays more and more attention to the efficient utilization of limited resources. It attempts to achieve turnaround through CEO substitution, adjustment of ownership concentration, innovation-oriented and other strategies. Based on Upper echelons theory and resource-based view, using the data of A-share listed manufacturing firms in Shanghai and Shenzhen from 2015 to 2019, the impacts of TMT tenure heterogeneity and ownership concentration on the innovation efficiency were investigated. The results show that the TMT tenure heterogeneity promotes the innovation efficiency of declining firms, while the relatively centralized ownership structure negatively moderates this effect. The robustness analysis of variable replacement and the solving of endogenous problem also further support this conclusion. This study not only enriches the application areas of Upper echelons theory, but also provides practical guideline for declining firms to replace top management members and to dilute equity in order to achieve recovery.

Replication Package of ``The Impacts of Managerial Autonomy on Firm Outcomes"

The paper “The Impacts of Managerial Autonomy on Firm Outcomes” uses a combination of newly collected data, and proprietary data. All of the former data used in the paper have been included here. The latter is the Center for Monitoring the Indian Economy’s (CMIE) Prowess dataset (CMIE, 2021), which is commercially available. This replication package includes raw and cleaned data that I digitized for the project, as well as simulated data to replace the Prowess data, to be able to replicate the code. I have included the results from this simulated dataset in this document, to allow for comparison.

Kala, Namrata. The impacts of managerial autonomy on firm outcomes. No. w26304. Knowledge-intensive firms, connectivity and spatial restructuring: dynamics and differences in Germany and Switzerland

This dataset is based on the interlocking network model developed by the Globalization and World Cities Study Group (GaWC) at Loughborough University (Taylor 2004). It provides one specific way to address the question how inter‐city relations can be empirically measured despite the chronic lack of data on inter‐city information flows. The model uses a proxy – intra‐firm networks of multi‐branch, multi‐location enterprises – to estimate potential flows of knowledge‐creating information between cities and towns. The method was originally developed to measure the connectivity between global cities based on multi‐branch advanced producer services (APS) firms as they organize business activities across their offices worldwide. In this dataset, the model is adapted to measure relations between functional urban areas (FUAs) within and beyond the German and Swiss space economy, for both APS and High-Tech firms. In contrast to the original methodology, in this dataset the company locations were localized by the exact, georeferenced address, not only on the level of FUAs.

The present dataset is created as part of the SNF research project “Knowledge-intensive firms, connectivity
and spatial restructuring: dynamics and differences in Germany and Switzerland”.
