Long-Lived Ensembles of Shallow NV− Centers in Flat and Nanostructured Diamonds by Photoconversion

Shallow, negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy centers (NV−) in diamond have been proposed for high-sensitivity magnetometry and spin-polarization transfer applications. However, surface effects tend to favor and stabilize the less useful neutral form, the NV0 centers. Here, we report the effects of green laser irradiation on ensembles of nanometer-shallow NV centers in flat and nanostructured diamond surfaces as a function of laser power in a range not previously explored (up to 150 mW/μm2). Fluorescence spectroscopy, optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR), and charge-photoconversion detection are applied to characterize the properties and dynamics of NV− and NV0 centers. We demonstrate that high laser power strongly promotes photoconversion of NV0 to NV− centers. Surprisingly, the excess NV− population is stable over a timescale of 100 ms after switching off the laser, resulting in long-lived enrichment of shallow NV−. The beneficial effect of photoconversion is less marked in nanostructured samples. Our results are important to inform the design of samples and experimental procedures for applications relying on ensembles of shallow NV− centers in diamond.

Eastern bettong (Bettongia gaimardi) reintroduced to Mulligan's Flat Woodland Sanctuary and Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve: DArT SNPs + individual information

Incorporating genetic data into conservation programmes improves management outcomes, but the impact of different sample-grouping methods on genetic diversity analyses is poorly understood. To this end, the multi-source reintroduction of the eastern bettong (Bettongia gaimardi) was used as a long-term case study to investigate how sampling regimes may affect common genetic metrics, and hence management decisions. The dataset comprised 5307 SNPs sequenced across 263 individuals. Samples included 45 founders from five genetically distinct Tasmanian source regions, and 218 of their descendants captured during annual monitoring at Mulligan's Flat Woodland Sanctuary (MFWS; 121 samples across eight generations), and Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve (TNR; 97 samples across nine generations). The most management-informative sampling regime was found to be generational cohorts, providing detailed long-term trends in genetic diversity. When these generation-specific trends were not investigated, recent changes in population genetics were masked, and it became apparent that management recommendations would be less appropriate. The results also illuminated the importance of considering establishment and persistence as separate phases of a multi-source reintroduction. The establishment phase (useful for informing early adaptive management) should consist of no less than two generations, and continue until admixture is achieved (admixture defined here as >80% of individuals possessing >60% of source genotypes, with no one source composing >70% of >20% individuals' genotype) is achieved. This ensures that the persistence phase analyses of population trends remain minimally biased. Based on this case study, we recommend that emphasis be given to the value of generationally specific analyses, and that conservation programmes collect DNA samples throughout the establishment and persistence phases, and avoid collecting genetic samples only when analysis is imminent. We also recommend that population genetic analyses for multi-source reintroductions consider whether admixture has been achieved when calculating descriptive genetic metrics.

Topological states in superlattices of HgTe class of materials for engineering three-dimensional flat bands

In search of materials with three-dimensional flat band dispersions, using ab-initio computations we investigate how topological phases evolve as a function of hydrostatic pressure and uniaxial strain in two types of superlattices: HgTe/CdTe and HgTe/HgSe. In short-period HgTe/CdTe superlattices, our analysis unveils the presence of isoenergetic nodal lines, which could host strain-induced three-dimensional flat bands at the Fermi level without requiring doping, when fabricated, for instance, as core-shell nanowires. In contrast, HgTe/HgSe short-period superlattices are found to harbor a rich phase diagram with a plethora of topological phases. Notably, the unstrained superlattice realizes an ideal Weyl semimetal with Weyl points situated at the Fermi level. A small-gap topological insulator with multiple band inversions can be obtained by tuning the volume: under compressive uniaxial strain, the material transitions sequentially into a Dirac semimetal to a nodal-line semimetal, and finally into a topological insulator with a single band inversion.

The provided repository contains data to reproduce the figures of the corresponding article.

Specimen displacement correction for powder x-ray diffraction in Debye-Scherrer geometry with a flat area detector

This is a repository of synchrotron, powder XRD data including area detector images (.tiff) and integrated intensity vs 2theta files (.xye) for an experiment determining a sample displacement correction equation for powder x-ray diffraction in Debye-Scherrer geometry with a flat area detector. Animal metacommunities of temporary ponds in a flat grassland landscape of Uruguay

The database comprises a survey of an animal metacommunity of temporary ponds carried out in October 2008, in a grassland landscape of Uruguay. The animal groups involve macroinvertebrates, fishes, and amphibians. Individual occurrence, taxonomic affiliation, and traits associated with diet and body size are provided. The metacommunity is located in a flat landscape surrounded by hills, where a maximum of 61 ponds, every year, are filled with water in winter and dry out in summer in the same spatial locations. Information on species and morphospecies abundances at the sampling unit level was recorded in 18 ponds, the number of ponds that were active (i.e., with water) at the sampling date. These ponds are part of the metacommunity for which plants have been sampled every year since 2005 in all ponds and for which environmental information was also compiled—data available in this same Dryad entry. Further surveys are being processed and will be available in the future. Data are provided for promoting the advancement of metacommunity theory, corroborating published studies, and generating novel ones. We are incorporating all the available information about the studied metacommunity that now comprises 20 years of continuous monitoring. The database includes animal species and morphospecies abundances at the sampling unit level for 18 temporary ponds sampled in October 2008. The species traits related to body sizes (measured for each individual) and trophic guild (obtained from literature) are presented together with the individual taxonomy. Note that species Order or family can also be used as a proxy of many conserved attributes like life history, resistance strategy, dispersal mode, or vulnerability to predators.
