Automatic System for Food Waste Assessment at Household
<p>ntroducing the Automatic System for Food Waste Assessment at Household developed under the WASTELESS project. This tool, which is tailored to everyday use, supports the measurement of food waste in households and is intended to improve and validate existing methods such as surveys. The tool includes a set of features to measure and estimate various types of food waste generated in households. The developed tool will be demonstrated on a representative sample of households to ensure its reliability and applicability. The core of this tool is a user-friendly scale complemented by a dedicated application for cell phones that enables seamless data collection and transfer to a centralized database. The data collected is then analysed and the results obtained are extrapolated to a wider population, allowing a more comprehensive evaluation of the parameters traditionally determined with questionnaires and interviews.</p>

The draft scientific opinion was prepared by the EFSA Panel on Contaminants in the Food Chain (CONTAM Panel), supported by the Working Group on Glycoalkaloids in feed and food. Data from: Assessment of the food habits of the Moroccan dorcas gazelle in M'Sabih Talaa, West central Morocco, using the trnL approach
Food habits of the Moroccan dorcas gazelle, Gazella dorcas massaesyla, previously investigated in the 1980s using microhistological fecal analysis, in the M'Sabih Talaa reserve west central Morocco, were re-evaluated over three seasons (spring, summer and autumn 2009) using the trnL approach to determine the diet composition and its seasonal variation from fecal samples. Taxonomic identification was carried out using the identification originating from the database built from EMBL and the list of plant species within the reserve. The total taxonomic richness in the reserve was 130 instead of 171 species in the 1980s. The diet composition revealed to be much more diversified (71 plant taxa belonging to 57 genus and 29 families) than it was 22 years ago (29 identified taxa). Thirty four taxa were newly identified in the diet while 13 reported in 1986-87 were not found. Moroccan dorcas gazelle showed a high preference to Acacia gummifera, Anagallis arvensis, Glebionis coronaria, Cladanthus arabicus, Diplotaxis tenuisiliqua, Erodium salzmannii, Limonium thouini, Lotus arenarius and Zizyphus lotus. Seasonal variations occurred in both number (40-41 taxa in spring-summer and 49 taxa in autumn vs. respectively 23-22 and 26 in 1986-1987) and taxonomic type of eaten plant taxa. This dietary diversification could be attributed either to the difference in methods of analysis, trnL approach having a higher taxonomic resolution, or a potential change in nutritional quality of plants over time.
Data from: Assessing the effect of predator control on an endangered goose population subjected to predator-mediated food web dynamics
1. Assessing the effectiveness of conservation actions to halt population declines is challenging when confounded by other factors. We assessed whether culling of red fox, a predator currently increasing in the sub-Arctic, contributed to recent recovery of the critically endangered Fennoscandian population of Lesser White-fronted Goose Anser erythropus, while controlling for potentially confounding food web dynamics. 2. Using 19 years of data, 10 before and 9 after the implementation of annual red fox culling, we estimated the effect of this action on annual performance of the goose population. We corrected for the potentially confounding effects of cyclic rodent dynamics and semi-domestic reindeer carrion abundance, both of which are expected to trigger predator functional and numerical responses, as well as for annual variation in spring phenology. 3. Goose reproductive success fluctuated in synchrony with the rodent cycle and was negatively related to abundant carrion. When accounting for these aspects of food web dynamics, there was no evidence for an effect of red fox culling on reproductive success. There was, however, a tendency for fox culling to increase adult survival. 4. Our analysis suggests that goose performance in their breeding area is influenced by fluctuating offspring predation, mediated by mainly natural (rodents) and partly anthropogenic (semi-domestic reindeer) dynamic components of the food web. 5. Synthesis and applications. The effect of a decade-long red fox culling on goose reproductive success and survival is currently uncertain. This is despite the fact that predation drives reproductive success through changes in rodent and reindeer carrion abundance. New management actions may consist of regulation of reindeer herd sizes and/or removal of carcasses to reduce the subsidizing effect of reindeer carrion on mesopredators. Getting robust evidence regarding the impact of red fox culling on population recovery depends on continuing research to disentangle food web dynamics and efficiency of management actions.

<p>This review explores the profound ramifications of climate change on food security in Nigeria through a comprehensive vulnerability assessment. As a nation heavily reliant on agriculture, Nigeria faces escalating challenges exacerbated by shifting climatic patterns. This study employs a multi-faceted approach to analyze the intricate interplay between climate change and food security, considering both current and projected impacts. Utilizing a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods, the research evaluates the vulnerability of key agricultural regions, examining variations in temperature, precipitation, and extreme weather events. The findings underscore a heightened susceptibility of crop yields and livestock production to climatic anomalies, presenting a clear threat to the nation's food supply chain. Moreover, the study delves into the socio-economic dimensions of vulnerability, scrutinizing the adaptive capacity of local communities and the efficacy of existing policies. Identifying vulnerable populations and regions is crucial for targeted interventions and policy formulation. The study however, discusses potential adaptation strategies, emphasizing the importance of sustainable agricultural practices, climate-resilient crop varieties, and community-based initiatives.</p>
Food aid in four European countries: Assessing the price and content of charitable food aid packages
<table> <tbody> <tr> <td> <table> <tbody> <tr> <td><strong>Description</strong></td> <td>The dataset is the result of a study on the content and monetary value of food aid packages distributed by local food aid organisations in four European cities: Antwerp, Barcelona, Budapest and Helsinki. Concretely, three food aid organisations per city, who fulfilled the inclusion criteria of the study, were randomly selected. In each organisation, two types of data were collected: 1) a structured interview with the head or a well-informed volunteer, and 2) four visits in which the content of the food aid packages was registered by a participating researcher. After this, food basket data was used to monetize the food aid products, and where necessary this was supplemented by available online pricing data of supermarkets in the four countries. The interviews were conducted at the location of the organisations and a few organisations also provided some of the information via e-mail or telephone. Although the questions were objective/factual about the history and functioning of the organisations only, some of the answers contain estimations of the interviewee in case when no objective information or data was available. The interview questions were set up in English and discussed with the involved researchers, but the questions were translated and the interviews were conducted in respectively Dutch, Hungarian, Finnish and Spanish. For analysis, the interview answers back to English. The registration of the content of the food aid packages included writing down relevant information about that product (such as volume, expiration date etc.) and to whom the product was given. Single-center, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, single andmultiple dose escalation study to assess safety and tolerability and pharmacokinetics of HRX215 in healthy male volunteers under food and fasting conditions
<p><a name="_Hlk123284665"></a><a name="_Hlk135557103"></a><span><span>Diminished hepatocyte regeneration is a key feature of acute and chronic liver diseases and after extended liver resections, resulting in the inability to maintain or restore a sufficient functional liver mass. </span></span><span><span>Therapies to restore hepatocyte regeneration are lacking, making liver transplantation the only curative option for end stage liver disease. We here report on the structure-based development and characterization (NMR-spectroscopy) of first-in-class small molecule inhibitors of the dual specific kinase MKK4 (MKK4i). MKK4i increased liver regeneration upon hepatectomy in murine and porcine models, allowed for survival of pigs in a lethal 85% hepatectomy model and showed antisteatotic and antifibrotic effects in liver disease mouse models. A first-in-human phase I trial (EudraCT 2021-000193-28) with the clinical candidate HRX215 was conducted and revealed excellent safety and pharmacokinetics. Clinical trials to probe HRX215 for prevention/treatment of liver failure after extensive oncological liver resections or after transplantation of small grafts are warranted.</span></span></p>
