Non-Conventional Time Domain (TD)-NMR Approaches for Food Quality: Case of Gelatin-Based Candies as a Model Food
<p>The TD-NMR technique mostly involves the use of T1 (spin-lattice) and T2 (spin-spin)<br> relaxation times to explain the changes occurring in food systems. However, these relaxation times<br> are affected by many factors and might not always be the best indicators to work with in food related<br> TD-NMR studies. In this study, the non-conventional TD-NMR approaches of Solid Echo<br> (SE)/Magic Sandwich Echo (MSE) and Spin Diffusion in food systems were used for the first time. Soft<br> confectionary gelatin gels were formulated and conventional (T1) and non-conventional (SE, MSE and<br> Spin Diffusion) TD-NMR experiments were performed. Corn syrups with different glucose/fructose<br> compositions were used to prepare the soft candies. Hardness, °Brix (°Bx), and water activity (aw)<br> measurements were also conducted complementary to NMR experiments. Relaxation times changed<br> (p < 0.05) with respect to syrup type with no obvious trend. SE/MSE experiments were performed to<br> calculate the crystallinity of the samples. Samples prepared with fructose had the lowest crystallinity<br> values (p < 0.05). Spin Diffusion experiments were performed by using Goldman–Shen pulse sequence<br> and the interface thickness (d) was calculated. Interface thickness values showed a wide range of<br> variation (p < 0.05). Results showed that non-conventional NMR approaches had a high potential to be<br> utilized in food systems for quality control purposes.</p>

<p>In this study, we explored why zooplankton migrated to surface waters at night from the perspective of their physiological characteristics and adaptability to the environment. The calanoid Arctodiaptomus sp. accumulated large amounts of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and astaxanthin, which relieved oxidative stress to fatty acids. The concentrations of lutein, a precursor of astaxanthin synthesis, were highest in surface water, indicating the enhancement of ultraviolet radiation (UVR) to precursor synthesis, which was confirmed by our indoor experiment. The calanoids migrated to surface water at night to obtain high concentrations of lutein and PUFAs from their diets. Relevant data for this study include: the vertical distribution of <em>Arctodiaptomus</em> sp. during the day and at night; concentrations of total astaxanthin, free astaxanthin, astaxanthin esters in <em>Arctodiaptomus</em> sp. at night and during the day; fatty acid concentration and the ratio of SAFAs (saturated fatty acids), MUFAs (monounsaturated fatty acids), and PUFAs in<em> Arctodiaptomus</em> sp. during the day and at night; the carotenoid concentrations in seston at different depth of Lake Heihai during the day and at night; the lutein concentration in seston under UVR and dark treatment; main characteristics of Lake Heihai; fatty acid concentrations and the ratio of SAFAs , MUFAs, and PUFAs of seston in Lake Heihai; the relative abundance of Chlorophytes with the size of greater than 5 μm and 0.2-5 μm in different layers of Lake Heihai; fatty acid concentrations of the calanoids in Fuxian Lake.</p>

Food quality shapes gradual phenotypic plasticity in ectotherms facing temperature variability
<p><span>Organisms exhibit reversible physiological adjustments as a response to rapidly changing environments. Yet, such plasticity of the phenotype is gradual and may lag behind the environmental fluctuations, thereby affecting the long-term average performance of the organisms. By supplying energy and essential compounds for optimal tissue building, food determines the range of possible phenotypic changes and potentially the rate at which they occur. Here, we assess how differences in the dietary supply of essential lipids modulate the phenotypic plasticity of an ectotherm facing thermal fluctuations. </span><span>We use three phytoplankton strains to create a gradient of polyunsaturated fatty acids and sterols supply for <em>Daphnia</em> <em>magna</em> under constant and fluctuating temperatures. We used three different fluctuation periodicities to unravel the temporal dynamics of gradual plasticity and its long-term consequences on <em>D. magna</em> performance measured as juvenile somatic growth rate. In agreement with gradual plasticity theory, we show that in <em>D. magna</em>, fluctuation periodicity determines the differential between observed growth rates and those expected from constant conditions. Most importantly, we show that diet modulates both the size and the direction of the growth rate differential. Overall, we demonstrate that the nutritional context is essential for predicting ectotherm consumers' performance in fluctuating thermal environments.</span></p>

Food quality of Ephestia eggs, the aphid Rhopalosiphum padi and mixed diet for Orius majusculus
<p>We studied the food quality of the aphid <em>Rhopalosiphum padi</em> to the pirate bug <em>Orius majusculus</em> using <em>Ephestia</em> eggs as high‐quality comparison prey. Several performance parameters were tested on individuals that had been reared and maintained on each of the two single‐prey diets or on a mixed diet. All fitness parameters were lower in individuals fed aphids only, indicating poor food quality of this prey. Compared with the pure <em>Ephestia</em> egg diet, the mixed diet enhanced teneral mass, while adult survival and female starvation tolerance were negatively affected and all other traits were unaffected. Body protein proportions were constant across diets, whereas lipid proportion was low in the aphid treatment. Preference for aphids was lower following a monotypic aphid diet than when reared on <em>Ephestia</em> eggs or a mixed diet. The results confirm that <em>R. padi</em> is low‐quality food for <em>O. majusculus</em> as it is for other generalist predators, even though <em>O. majusculus</em> may contribute significantly to population suppression of the aphid.</p>
The effects of integrated food and bioenergy cropping systems on crop yields, soil health, and biomass quality: the EU and Brazilian experience
<p><strong>Data Set</strong></p> <p>This multiyear and multi-location study provides new insights on the integration of dedicated legume crops within conventional EU (wheat-maize) and Brazilian (sugarcane) farming systems so to meet the forecasted increasing feedstock demands for the production of renewable transport biofuels without negatively affecting food production nor soil fertility. Sunn hemp demonstrated to be a suitable leguminous fiber feedstock to be grown in extended crop rotations. Integrating sunn hemp within the conventional systems in EU did not have negative effects on food yields, while feedstock availability increased up to 2.0 times. In Brazil, sugarcane stalks yield increased up to 15 Mg ha<sup>-1</sup>.</p>

Data for: Fast adjustment of POLS to food quality
<p><span>The pace-of-life syndrome hypothesis provides a framework for the adaptive integration of behaviour, physiology and life history at between and within species. It suggests that behaviours involving a risk of death or injury should co-vary with a higher allocation to fast reproduction. Empirical support for this hypothesis is mixed, presumably because important influencing factors such as environmental variation, are usually neglected. By experimentally manipulating the food quality of wild mice living under semi-natural conditions for three generations, we show that individuals adjust their life history strategies and risk-taking behaviours as well as trait covariation (N<sub>individuals</sub> = </span><span>1442)</span><span>. These phenotypic differences are correlated to differences in transcriptomic gene expression of primarily metabolic processes in the liver while no changes in gene frequencies occurred. Our discussion emphasizes the need to integrate the role of environmental conditions and phenotypic plasticity in shaping relationships among behaviour, physiology and life-history in response to changing environmental conditions.</span></p>

Longitudinal variation in the nutritional quality of basal food sources and its effect on invertebrates and fish in subalpine rivers
<p><span><span>1. There is growing recognition of the importance of food quality over quantity for aquatic consumers. In streams and rivers, most previous studies considered this primarily in terms of the quality of terrestrial leaf litter and importance of microbial conditioning. However, many recent studies suggest that algae are a more nutritional food source for riverine consumers than leaf litter. To date, few studies have quantified longitudinal shifts in the nutritional quality of basal food resources in river ecosystems and how these may affect consumers.</span></span></p> <p><span><span>2. We conducted a field investigation in a subalpine river ecosystem in Austria to investigate longitudinal variations in diet quality of basal food sources (submerged leaves and periphyton) and diet source dependence of stream consumers (invertebrate grazers, shredders, filterers and predators, and fish). Fatty acid (FA) profiles of basal food sources and their consumers were measured.</span></span></p> <p><span><span>3. Our results indicate systematic differences between the FA profiles of terrestrial leaves and aquatic biota, i.e., periphyton, invertebrates and fish. Submerged leaves contained very low proportions of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFA), which were conversely rich in aquatic biota. While the FA composition of submerged leaves remained similar among sites, the LC-PUFA of periphyton increased longitudinally, which was associated with increasing nutrients from upstream to downstream.</span></span></p> <p><span><span>4. Longitudinal variations in periphyton LC-PUFA were reflected in the LC-PUFA of invertebrate grazers and shredders, and further tracked by invertebrate predators and fish. However, brown trout (<i>Salmo trutta</i>) contained a large proportion of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6ω3), a LC-PUFA almost entirely missing in basal sources and invertebrates. The fish accumulated eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5ω3) from invertebrate prey and may use this FA to synthesize DHA.</span></span></p> <p><span><span>5. Our results provide a nutritional perspective for river food web studies, emphasizing the importance of algal resources to consumer somatic growth and the need to account for the longitudinal shifts in the quality of these basal resources.</span></span></p>
