DStr. Catacombs of San Gennaro Duck Fresco

The arched niche (arcosolium) for 2 graves (plus some later tombs above them; today destroyed) is located on the left side of a burial chamber near the end of the main corridor in the lower level of the catacomb. The paintings may date from the 4th century A.D., but are destroyed to a certain extent. The ceiling shows a geometric pattern, the fields of which are filled with reddish blooms and cruciform or round objects. A hanging garland is preserved on both side walls. While on the right one below it you recognize (perhaps) only the foot and parts of a standing bird, on the left wall you see clearly a chubby bird, mostly identified as duck. 3D model was made in RealityCapture software using 183 images and 2 laser scan positions. Fresco (Dstretch), San Andrea Church, Arcidosso

This is a fresco above the door of the San Andrea church, Arcidosso, Grosseto, Tuscany. The fresco has been processed in Dstretch to better visualize the poorly preserved images. Probably it represents the announcement to Saint Mary. In front of the fresco a later shield with the arms of "Confraternita della Misericordia", a laical christian company devoted to public assistance activities. Model was created in Reality Capture using 135 photographs. The Mt. Amiata Project is an ongoing GDH collaboration involving faculty and students at the University of Florence and the University of Siena. Early Paleo-Christian Frescoes, Catacombs-Napoli

Here are 2 large underground burial grounds (hypogea), the front one being partially destroyed. Besides some tombs on the ground (formae) and on the walls (loculi), both chambers mainly have arched niches for burials (arcosolia), distributed rather regularly on the walls. Both rooms are currently dated in the 3rd century A.D. and belong to the oldest part of that level. While the front room has no figurative paintings, the rear one has many figurative paintings both in the axially symmetrically arranged fields of the in very high quality painted ceiling and in several arcosolia. Some of the depictions are among the earliest in Christian art! Model done in Reality Capture using 8543 images and 82 FARO laser scans. DSTRETCH. The burial chamber is located on the upper level of the catacombs. Only in one case, the painting of an arched niche (above 1 tomb) is well preserved. It shows the saint Gennaro (middle), flanked by candleholders and two deceased females, the woman Cominia (right) und the female child Nicatiola (left). All figures are depicted in prayer position. Fragments of paintings are still preserved on the back wall of the niche and on the left side of the front of the niche. Each painting is made only of red dots and shows a medallion with a cross and the Christogram and the Greek letters Alpha and Omega (Symbols for the beginning and the end). DS. The burial chamber is located in the upper level of the Catacomb. Most parts show no decoration today. Only the paintings of 2 arched burial niches are existing. Besides inscriptions and candles or candleholders, both show on the back wall the named defunt(s) in prayer position: a high ranking family (Ilaritas, Nonnosa [above a golden wreath with pearls and a gem], Theotecnus) as well as a dark-skinned man (Proculus). Floral elements decorate the reveal and marble imitation the lower part of the front. The front of Proculus's tomb also shows palm trees. DStretch The arched niche over 1 tomb (arcosolum) with a slightly plastic frame (in the zenith a red medallion with a cross) is located in a corridor of the upper level of the catacombs. The back wall of the tomb is decorated with tendrils of wine and a medallion, which depicts the bust of a deceased man, called Eleusinius. The reveal depicts two opened books in the lower part. A pattern of rhomb with flowers fill the rest of the reveal. The motives are framed by red bands with gems and pearls. The burial chamber (cubiculum) is located in the upper level of the Catacomb. 3 arched niches (arcosolia) and 3 rectangular graves (in one 2 Justinian's coins [527-565 A.D.] were found) are visible. Most parts were painted. But only in 2 arcosolia the paintings show a medallion with a Christogram-cross and the Greek letters Alpha and Omega, surrounded by 2 birds and 2 green plants. The rear wall of the 3. arcosolium offers only a tomb (loculus). There are either green acanthus tendrils or red palmettes in the soffits. The ceiling has - as far as discernible - red tendril-like strands. The paintings are currently dated in the 5th century A.D. 1082 photos and 6 laser scans. The paintings are in bad conservation status: In the lunette you can only see reddish color structures against a partly bluish background.
