Data from: Functional Frogs: Using swimming performance as a model to understand natural selection and adaptations
<p>The 'Functional Frogs' 5E lesson plan is an outcome of a Research Experience for Teachers (RET) program funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). The NSF project integrates research on swimming locomotion in frogs with broader goals of improving science education. The aim of this RET program was to increase scientific literacy in secondary school teachers in Oklahoma, so that they can transfer knowledge from academic research experience to the classroom and thus improve their students' understanding of science. In the this lesson, we focus primarily on comparing the peak velocity of five species of frogs, guiding students to collect data from videos of frogs swimming. The students then make evidence-based interpretations about the morphological traits that may underlie differences in swimming velocity across species. The five species differ both in morphology and ecology, with some inhabiting the aquatic environment more than others. Therefore, the lesson helps guide students through important steps of the scientific method to achieve a greater understanding of how adaptations arise in nature through examining variation in ecology, morphology, and locomotor performance.</p>
High physiological function for corals with thermally tolerant, host-adapted symbionts
<p>The flexibility to associate with more than one symbiont may considerably expand a host's niche breadth. Coral animals and dinoflagellate micro-algae represent one of the most functionally integrated and widespread mutualisms between two eukaryotic partners. Symbiont identity greatly affects a coral's ability to cope with extremes in temperature and light. Over its broad distribution across the Eastern Pacific, the ecologically dominant branching coral, <em>Pocillopora grandis</em>, depends on mutualisms with the dinoflagellates <em>Durusdinium glynnii</em> and <em>Cladocopium latusorum</em>. Measurements of skeletal growth, calcification rates, total mass increase, calyx dimensions, reproductive output and response to thermal stress were used to assess the functional performance of these partner combinations. The results show both host–symbiont combinations displayed similar phenotypes; however, significant functional differences emerged when exposed to increased temperatures. Negligible physiological differences in colonies hosting the more thermally tolerant <em>D. glynnii</em> refute the prevailing view that these mutualisms have considerable growth tradeoffs. Well beyond the Eastern Pacific, pocilloporid colonies with <em>D. glynnii</em> are found across the Pacific in warm, environmentally variable, near-shore lagoonal habitats. While rising ocean temperatures threaten the persistence of contemporary coral reefs, lessons from the Eastern Pacific indicate that co-evolved thermally tolerant host–symbiont combinations are likely to expand ecologically and spread geographically to dominate reef ecosystems in the future.</p>

Functional traits: Adaption of ferns in forest
<p>Ferns evolved from 400 million years ago show various functional traits and ecological strategies in extant species, and over 80% of them belong to the youngest order Polypodiales. How the functional traits and strategies of ferns have changed during their evolutionary history remains unexplored. Here, we measured functional traits that sensitive to environmental light and water availability of 345 fern species across the fern phylogeny, and reconstructed their evolutionary histories. We found that ferns, mainly Polypodiales, have developed diversified functional traits in response to forest environments. Terrestrial species, especially Thelypteridaceae and Athyriaceae in eupolypods II, showed decreased leaf mass per area (LMA) and area-based leaf nitrogen (Narea) but increased mass-based leaf nitrogen (Nmass) than early-derived polypods since the late Jurassic. Epiphytic species, mainly those in Polypodiaceae, showed reductions in Nmass and individual leaf area (Area) since the late Cretaceous. The adaptation of functional traits of Polypodiales to forest environment may have played a crucial role in fern radiation since the late Jurassic. Integrative analysis of functional traits especially the numerical ones may shed new light on plant evolution.</p>
