Global zircon U-Th-Pb geochronology database

We present here a database of zircon U−Th−Pb geochronology, which samples the global continental crust and spans nearly the entire Earth's history. This database collects ~2,000,000 geochronology records from ~12,000 papers and theses over a period exceeding 50 years and is by far the largest geochronology database to our knowledge. The lithology of the host rock of the zircon samples includes sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks. The source references are from the following academic publishers: Elsevier, Cambridge, Geological Society of London, Oxford, Springer, Taylor & Francis, Wiley, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI). Here, the zircon data compilation contains "Database" files and a "References" file. The "Database" files contain about two million zircon U−Th−Pb dating records, including four isotope ratios (206Pb/238U, 207Pb/235U, 207Pb/206Pb, and 208Pb/232Th) and errors, four corresponding ages and errors, as well as sample information, dating instrument, dating reference material, host rock lithology, sampling location, and reference number. The "References" file contains the information of the source references corresponding to zircon geochronology records, including reference number, author, year, and other publication information. For each record in the "Database" files, its reference can be found in the "References" file through the reference number. This collection not only provides us with a comprehensive platform to study zircon chronological data in deep time and space but also makes it possible to explore the underlying geodynamic mechanism and the evolution of the Earth system.

This database is a supplement to the following article:

Wu, Y., Fang, X., & Ji, J. Episodic evolution of a protracted convergent margin revealed by detrital zircon geochronology in the Greater Caucasus

Convergent margins play a fundamental role in the construction and modification of Earth's lithosphere and are characterized by poorly understood episodic processes that occur during the progression from subduction to terminal collision. On the northern margin of the active Arabia-Eurasia collision zone, the Greater Caucasus Mountains provide an opportunity to study a protracted convergent margin that spanned most of the Phanerozoic and culminated in Cenozoic continental collision. However, the main episodes of lithosphere formation and deformation along this margin remain enigmatic. Here, we use detrital zircon U-Pb geochronology from Paleozoic and Mesozoic (meta)sedimentary rocks in the Greater Caucasus, along with select zircon U-Pb and Hf isotopic data from coeval igneous rocks, to link key magmatic and depositional episodes along the Caucasus convergent margin. Devonian to Early Carboniferous rocks were deposited prior to Late Carboniferous accretion of the Greater Caucasus crystalline core onto the Laurussian margin. Permian to Triassic rocks document a period of northward subduction and forearc deposition south of a continental margin volcanic arc in the Northern Caucasus and Scythian Platform. Jurassic rocks record the opening of the Caucasus Basin as a back-arc rift during southward migration of the arc front into the Lesser Caucasus. Cretaceous rocks have few Jurassic-Cretaceous zircons, indicating a period of relative magmatic quiescence and minimal exhumation within this basin. Late Cenozoic closure of the Caucasus Basin juxtaposed the Lesser Caucasus arc to the south against the crystalline core of the Greater Caucasus to the north and led to the formation of a hypothesized terminal suture. We expect this suture to be within ~20 kilometers of the southern range front of the Greater Caucasus because all analyzed rocks to the north exhibit a provenance affinity with the crystalline core of the Greater Caucasus.

Data from: Redefining the Huayquerian Stage (Upper Miocene to Lower Pliocene) of the South American chronostratigraphic scale based on biostratigraphical analyses and geochronological dating

The Huayquerian Stage of the South American chronostratigraphic scheme (named for the Huayquerías del Este, Argentina) was originally based on a poorly known mammal association of six taxa from the Huayquerías Formation. We studied the geology, age and fauna of the Neogene sequence in this area, including the Huayquerías, Tunuyán and Bajada Grande formations. The sequence comprises a monotonous succession of synorogenic epiclastic sediments deposited under arid to semi-arid conditions. Zircon U–Pb dates from 10 tuffaceous levels (7.2–1.6 Ma) place deposition of the Huayquerías Formation during the late Tortonian or Messinian to early Zanclean, the Tunuyán Formation during the Zanclean–Piacenzian, and the Bajada Grande Formation during the Piacenzian–Calabrian. We present 43 and 31 new mammal taxon records for the Huayquerías and Tunuyán formations, respectively. Progressive faunal change was observed along the sequence. The first records of the Chaco tortoise Chelonoidis chilensis and the notoungulate Xotodon major, and the latest records of Interatheriidae and Typotheriopsis (notoungulates), Metacaremys calfucalel, Phtoramys hidalguense and Lagostomus pretrichodactyla (rodents), Chasicotatus ameghinoi and Macroeuphractus morenoi (xenarthrans) are reported. The faunal associations of the Huayquerías and lower Tunuyán formations are highly similar to each other, and to other coeval localities in Argentina. The Macroeuphractus morenoi Assemblage Biozone is proposed as the basis for redefining the Huayquerian Stage, due to the co-occurrence of three taxa with wide geographical distribution in southern South America: Macroeuphractus morenoi, Pseudotypotherium subinsigne and Lagostomus pretrichodactyla. The age of this biozone is constrained at c. 8–5 Ma in its type area.

Toba Caldera geochronological and modelling dataset

Bayesian statistical analysis and inverse thermal history modeling of feldspar 40Ar/39Ar and zircon (U-Th)/He ages reveal that post-caldera dome eruptions at Toba Caldera, Sumatra occurred up to ca. 13.6 kyr later than indicated by 40Ar/39Ar feldspar ages. This discordance implies cold storage of feldspar antecrysts prior to eruption for a maximum duration of ca. 5 and 13 kyr at between 280°C and 500°C. These findings connote that the solidified carapace of remnant magma after the Youngest Toba Tuff (YTT) eruption ~74 ka erupted in a subsolidus state, without being thermally remobilized or rejuvenated. Our data mean that resurgent uplift and volcanism initiated approximately 5 kyrs after the climactic YTT eruption, thus providing rare constraints on resurgence after a cataclysmic supereruption. Our approach has the potential to reveal complexities in pre-eruptive storage and eruption at unprecedented temporal resolution with implications for active restless calderas and young silicic volcanoes worldwide.
