Genotypes and geographic positions of 5797 European white oaks from 636 locations genotyped at 355 nuclear SNPs and 28 maternally inherited SNPs of the chloroplast and mitochondria
<p class="MsoNormal"><span>The data set is the result of genetic inventory on 5797 white oaks collected at 636 locations all over Europe. The oaks trees were assigned in forest inventories as <em>Quercus robur</em> </span><em>L.</em> <span>(3342), <em>Quercus petraea </em></span><em>Matt</em>. <span>(2090), <em>Quercus pubescens </em></span><em>Willd</em>. <span>(170) or as unspecified <em>Quercus</em>. spp. (195). The sampling had a focus on central and east Europe as well as the Black Sea and Caucasus region. All individuals were genotyped at 355 nuclear SNPs and 28 maternally inherited SNPs of the chloroplast and mitochondria. The combination of the maternally inherited SNPs resulted in 26 different haplotypes. </span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span>The genotype of each individual is one row in the csv-file "genotypes". The genotypes at the nuclear markers are diploid and represented by two columns per gene marker. The genetic information at the organelle genome is haploid. For each of these gene markers one column is used. Genotypes are coded by Arabic numbers. The meaning of the numbers is explained in the table "coding genotypes" in a second csv-file. Each Individual has a unique "Genotype_ID" and a "Thuenen_Sample_ID". The "Thuenen_Sample_ID" is a unique ID that serves to identify the sample in our depository at the Thuenen Institute of Forest Genetics. Each individual has data on the geographic origin given as "Longitude" and "Latitude" in decimal degrees. For each individual the putative oak species ("Putative species") as it has been assigned in the forest inventories is given. The numbers of the "Haplotype" represent the multilocus combination of the mitochondrial and chloroplast SNPs of that individual.</span></p>
Locations of GPS-collared moose and geographic correlates, as well as for random points within study area
<p>Moose are among the many species that are vulnerable to both direcdt and indirect effects of climate change. Habitat selection is one framework to assist investigators in disentangling the various factors (including weather) that ultimately dictate how animals respond to their environment. We investigated patterns of winter habitat selecdtion by adult female moose in southerwestern MOntana, USA, during 2007-2010, and how that selection was affected by snow (quantified by snow water equivalent) and winter temperatures. We used data from GPS colalrs and a suite of environmental covariates to quantify winter habitat selection at both study area (2nd order) and home range (3rd order) spatial scales using resource selection functions. Moose strongly select for the willow (<em>Salix</em> spp.) cover type, and against grassland cover. Moose use of conifer cover at the home range scale increased when either amount of snow or ambient temperature was higher, altough the latter only during periods of the day when conifer pathces were likely to have been cooler than cover types lacking a canopy. Wildlife conservatoin and management naturally focuses on preferred habitats, particularly those that fulfill essentially all forgaing requirements. However, habitats used preferentially under stresful weather conditions, even if used rarely overall, can also form a critical part of a species' overall needs.,</p>

Data from: Interactions between soil habitat and geographic range location affect plant fitness
Populations are often found on different habitats at different geographic locations. This habitat shift may be due to biased dispersal, physiological tolerances or biotic interactions. To explore how fitness of the native plant Chamaecrista fasciculata depends on habitat within, at and beyond its range edge, we planted seeds from five populations in two soil substrates at these geographic locations. We found that with reduced competition, lifetime fitness was always greater or equivalent in one habitat type, loam soils, though early-season survival was greater on sand soils. At the range edge, natural populations are typically found on sand soil habitats, which are also less competitive environments. Early-season survival and fitness differed among source populations, and when transplanted beyond the range edge, range edge populations had greater fitness than interior populations. Our results indicate that even when the optimal soil substrate for a species does not change with geographic range location, the realized niche of a species may be restricted to sub-optimal habitats at the range edge because of the combined effects of differences in abiotic and biotic effects (e.g. competitors) between substrates.

Environmental information, geographical location and size spectra of stream fish communities in France
<p>The data includes environmental information, geographical location and size spectrum slopes of 1,095 stream fish communities in France sampled between 2015 and 2018. Stream fish communities were sampled using electrofishing following standardized protocols in streams. Size spectra were calculated using two common techniques: one using the ordinary-least-square linear regression and the other using maximum likelihood estimates. The data is a subset of the original data by the Office Français de la Biodiversité.</p>

Data from: High spatiotemporal overlap in the non-breeding season despite geographically dispersed breeding locations in the eastern whip-poor-will (Antrostomus vociferus)
<p>The eastern whip-poor-will (Antrostomus vociferus) is a Neotropical migrant that has declined by 70% in recent decades, yet when and where populations are limited throughout the annual cycle is poorly understood. We deployed 115 archival GPS tags across a 9.5-degree latitudinal span (~1000 km; midwestern US) on whip-poor-wills in the summers of 2017 and 2019, and extracted data from 52 tags. The associated .csv file exhibits the raw movement data extracted from the archival GPS tags, where each row represents a GPS fix location for a given bird. The columns present are largely those generated by Lotek, although researchers created a few columns to aid in identification of birds and downstream data analysis. Of particular note is the "season" column, where we quantified the likely behavior (e.g., fall migration) of the individual at the given time and location. These points essentially represent the migratory tracks from both fall and spring (when available), including both the breeding and wintering grounds location. We found that whip-poor-wills circumvented the Gulf of Mexico, and populations across a large latitudinal gradient came together in eastern Texas in early October, resulting in decreased connectivity throughout migration. Breeding-winter migratory connectivity was low (MC = 0.22 ± 0.12), with extensive overlap of core wintering areas in southern Mexico and Guatemala. See methods in manuscript for more info.</p>
