<p>This record contains raw data related to the article:&quot;&nbsp;Mercaptoalbumin Is Associated with Graft Patency in Patients Undergoing Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting&quot;&nbsp;</p> <p>Abstract</p> <p>Coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery still represents the gold standard for patients with complex multivessel coronary artery disease. However, graft occlusion still occurs in a significant proportion of CABG conduits, and oxidative stress is currently considered to be a potential contributor. Human serum albumin (HSA) represents the main antioxidant in plasma through its reduced amino acid Cys34, which can efficiently scavenge several oxidants.<strong> </strong>In a nested case&ndash;control study including 36 patients with occluded grafts and 38 age- and sex-matched patients without occlusion, we assessed the levels of the native mercaptoalbumin (HSA-SH) and oxidized thiolated form of albumin (Thio-HSA) in relation with graft occlusion within 5 years after CABG.<strong> </strong>We found that the plasma level of preoperative HSA-SH was significantly lower in patients with occluded graft at 5 years follow-up than in patients with graft patency. Furthermore, low HSA-SH remained independently associated with graft occlusion even after adjusting for preoperative D-dimer, a well-known marker of activated coagulation recently found to be associated with graft occlusion. In conclusion, the preoperative level of HSA-SH is independently associated with graft occlusion in CABG and represents a measurable and potentially druggable predictor.</p>

Does natural root grafting make trees better competitors?

Natural root grafts (anastomoses) are morphological unions formed between roots of different trees. Common root systems allow translocation of water, nutrients and photosynthesis products between grafted trees, affecting their growth and their physiology. As carbohydrates are redistributed among grafted trees, the formation of a common root system could reduce the negative effect of intraspecific competition for light or soil resources within stands. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of root grafting on intraspecific competition and growth of balsam fir (Abies balsamea (L.) Mill). We studied inter-tree relationships in three natural balsam fir stands of the boreal forest of Quebec (Canada) that contained an average 36% of grafted trees. At each stand, ring width and basal area of trees were measured using dendrochronology techniques. We used mixed linear models to test the effect of root grafting and intraspecific competition on annual basal area increment of trees. Trees before grafting had higher growth rates than trees once grafted. Thus, root grafting did not improve tree growth. Growth of grafted trees was more negatively affected by intraspecific competition than growth of non-grafted trees. Thus, grafted trees cannot be considered as better competitors than non-grafted trees. Under high intraspecific competition, growth of larger grafted trees was less affected than that of smaller trees suggesting that they were able to divert resources at their advantage within a union. Our study demonstrated that grafted trees acted on each other's growth and provides support for the idea that grafted trees respond to competition for resources more as a community rather than as individual trees.

Repeated autologous fat grafting significantly increases mas-tectomy flap thickness in prepectoral multi-stage composite expander-to-implant breast reconstruction: exploring the con-cept of a reverse expansion

Raw Data for the article: Clinical outcomes of transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt with PTFE-covered stents after liver transplantation and technical results in split and whole liver graft recipients

<p><strong>Objectives:&nbsp;</strong>To assess the outcomes of transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) creation using PTFE-covered stents in liver transplant (LT) recipients and to analyze the technical result of TIPS creation in split grafts (SG) compared with whole liver grafts (WG).</p> <p><strong>Methods and materials:&nbsp;</strong>Single-center, retrospective study, analyzing LT patients who underwent TIPS using PTFE-covered stents. Clinical and technical variables were analyzed.</p> <p><strong>Results:&nbsp;</strong>Between 2005 and 2021, TIPS was created using PTFE-covered stents in 48 LT patients at a median of 43 months (range, 0.5-192) after LT. TIPS indications were refractory ascites (RA) in 33 patients (69%), variceal bleeding (VB) in 9 patients (19%), others in 6 (12%). Ten patients (21%) received a SG. Technical success rate was 100% in both groups: in two WG recipients, (5%) a second attempt was required. An unconventional approach (combined transhepatic or transplenic access) was needed in 2 WG (5%) and 2 SG recipients (20%). Two procedure-related death occurred in the WG group. After a median follow-up of 22 months (range, 0,1-144), 16 patients (48%) in the RA group did not require post-TIPS paracentesis, in the VB group rebleeding occurred in 3 patients (33%). Fifteen patients (31%) underwent TIPS revision. Overt hepatic encephalopathy occurred in 14 patients (29%). Patient survival at 6 months, 1 year, and 3 years was 77%, 66%, and 43%, respectively.</p> <p><strong>Conclusions:&nbsp;</strong>The feasibility and safety of TIPS creation in SG are comparable to that of WG. TIPS creation using PTFE-covered stents represents a viable option to treat portal hypertensive complications in LT recipients.</p>

Data for: Versatile synthesis of siloxane-based graft copolymers with tunable grafting density

<p>A versatile synthetic platform is reported that affords high molecular weight graft copolymers containing polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) backbones and vinyl-based side chains with excellent control over molecular weight and grafting density. The synthetic approach leverages thiol–ene click chemistry to attach an atom-transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) initiator to a variety of commercially available poly(dimethylsiloxane-<em>co</em>-methylvinylsiloxane) (PDMS-<em>co</em>-PVMS), followed by controlled radical polymerization with a wide scope of vinyl monomers. Selective degradation of the siloxane backbone with tetrabutylammonium fluoride confirmed the controlled nature of side-chain growth via radical polymerization, yielding targeted side-chain lengths for copolymers containing up to 50% grafting density and overall molecular weights in excess of 1 MDa. In addition, by using a mixture of thiols, grafting density and functionality can be further controlled by tuning initiator loading along the backbone. For example, solid-state fluorescence of the graft copolymers was achieved by incorporating a thiol-containing fluorophore along the siloxane backbone during the thiol–ene click reaction. This simple synthetic platform provides facile control over the properties of a wide variety of grafted copolymers containing flexible PDMS backbones and vinyl polymer side chains.</p>
