Data from: Impact of involvement of non-formal health providers on TB case notification among migrant slum-dwelling populations in Odisha, India
Background: Migrant labourers living in the slums of urban and industrial patches across India make up a key sub-population so far controlling Tuberculosis (TB) in the country is concerned. This is because many TB patients from these communities remain under reached by the Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme (RNTCP) of India. This marginalized community usually seeks early-stage healthcare from "friendly neighbourhood" non-formal health providers (NFHPs). Because, RNTCP has limited capacity to involve the NFHPs, an implementation research project was conceived, whereby an external partner would engage with the NFHPs to enable them to identify early TB symptomatics from this key sub-population who would be then tested using Xpert MTB/RIF technology. Diagnosed TB cases among them would be referred promptly to RNTCP for treatment. This paper aimed to describe the project and its impact. Methods: Adopting a quasi-experimental before-after design, four RNTCP units from two major urban-industrial areas of Odisha were selected for intervention, which spanned five quarters and covered 151,400 people, of which 30% were slum-dwelling migrants. Two similar units comprised the control population. The hypothesis was, reaching the under reached in the intervention area through NFHPs would increase TB notification from these traditionally under-notifying units. RNTCP notification data during intervention was compared with pre-intervention era, adjusted for contemporaneous changes in control population. Results: The project detected 488 Xpert+ TB cases, of whom 466 were administered RNTCP treatment. This translated into notification of additional 198 new bacteriologically positive cases to RNTCP, a 30% notification surge, after adjustment for 2% decline in control. This meant an average quarterly increase in notification of 41.20(20.08, 62.31; p<0.001) cases. The increase was immediate, evident from the rise in level in the time series analysis by 50.42(10.28, 90.55; p=0.02) cases. Conclusion: Engagement with NFHPs contributed to an increase in TB notification to RNTCP from key under reached, slum-dwelling migrant populations.
Assessing the Impact of an Intervention to Improve the Quality of Emergency Obstetric Care on Maternal Health in Nigeria

Nigeria suffers some of the highest rates of maternal and perinatal mortality in the world. Poor quality of obstetric care is a key factor, and although not quantified at a national level, local studies suggest that high rates of maternal and perinatal deaths are due to clinical management errors in hospitals. This project therefore explored the nature of existing practices and quality of clinical management of three leading causes of maternal and perinatal deaths (primary postpartum haemorrhage, eclampsia, and obstructed labour); implement an intervention package aimed at improving the quality of clinical management of these causes of deaths; and test the effectiveness of this package on quality of care indicators and maternal and perinatal outcomes.

The study follows a quasi-experimental research design, using interrupted time series analysis for assessment over a three year period. Six public secondary care hospitals and two public tertiary care hospitals in both north and south of Nigeria were selected randomly. Formative research was conducted in all eight hospitals, and thereafter the intervention will be carried out in four hospitals, with the remaining four hospitals functioning as control sites. The package consists of training in use of evidence-based clinical protocols on postpartum haemorrhage (PPH), preeclampsia/eclampsia and obstructed labour, audit and feedback, reminders, commodity supply monitoring and replenishments and patients’ education.

Clinical outcomes will be compared between intervention and control sites in a total of 2334 cases of PPH, preeclampsia/eclampsia and obstructed labour (based on an anticipated 50% reduction in case fatality rates, significance level of 0.05 and 80% power). This will consist of 1167 cases in the intervention sites and 1167 in the control sites. Maternal and perinatal mortality rates will serve as primary outcome measures. Secondary outcomes involve quality of care drawn from United Nations process indicators, skilled attendance index and data derived from the formative audit phase of the project.

The results will enable the identification of a system-wide quality of care framework for improving the delivery of emergency obstetric care for the prevention of maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality in Nigeria.

LOCKED: A dataset of sociodemographic, economic, living, and health features to measure the impact of the Spanish lockdown during COVID-19 on mental health conditions

A dataset aimed at enhancing the understanding of the mental health effects of the COVID-19 lockdown in Spain. This dataset serves as a valuable resource by integrating psychological assessments, such as the SA-45 pyschological test, with comprehensive socioeconomic, living, and health-related information. By combining these diverse data points, the dataset enables researchers to analyze how various invidual factors influenced nine mental health conditions during the lockdown, providing a robust foundation for further studies on this critical topic.

Assessing the Impact of Supply-Side Policies on Oil Extraction, Health, and Employment in California

California's ambitious goal to slash GHG emissions by 90% by 2045 marks a significant shift towards sustainability. Supply-side policies, such as Senate Bill 1137, which bans new oil and gas wells within 3,200 feet of sensitive areas, signal a commitment to environmental and public health protection. To gauge SB 1137's impact accurately, the existing model must be adapted to incorporate this setback distance. This capstone project aims to bridge this gap by updating the model and creating accessible educational materials for Californians. Objectives include updating the model, predicting well locations and oil extraction using machine learning, and developing a public online app with R Shiny. The MEDS capstone group will investigate the effects of the 3,200-foot setback distance on emissions, employment, and health, contributing to the evidence supporting SB 1137.
