How is ICT use linked to household transport expenditure? A cross-national macro analysis of the influence of home broadband access

Dataset used for analysis in the paper.

ABSTRACT: Understanding of the interactions between Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and physical mobility is a major area of research with practical applications in a number of fields. Very little, however, is known regarding how these relationships vary on a cross-national basis, including across countries at different stages in development. To address this gap, this paper presents an analysis of household transport expenditure as a function of the available variables, with a particular focus on the ICT. This analysis is based on a cross-sectional dataset from 2010 comprising information on 33 countries including average household transport expenditure, ICT represented by the percentage of households with Internet access at home, and a number of contextual macroeconomic and infrastructural variables
Using a log-log framework we find that, in our sample of countries, household transport expenditure is negatively associated with Internet penetration with an elasticity of -0.394. We verify this to be robust to endogeneity using presence of restrictions on foreign ownership in the Internet market as an instrumental variable. We also control for potential differences in data quality across countries using the Corruption Perceptions Index. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt to quantify this relationship at a cross-national level while also controlling for endogeneity and data quality issues. Among the control variables, we observe the estimated effects to be intuitive, and consistent with existing research and microeconomic understandings of the behaviour of individuals and households.

Exploring Gender Perspectives on Parenthood Experiences among Fathers and Mothers in the ICT Field

This paper investigates the challenges encountered by mothers and fathers in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) field regarding parenthood, with a focus on gender perspectives. A survey was conducted with practitioners in the ICT field to explore their perceptions of parenting challenges. Findings indicate that while male practitioners perceive the organizational culture as inclusive towards parents, most women do not share this perception. Mothers express insecurity about the impact of maternity leave on their careers and report receiving fewer job opportunities because they have children, whereas most fathers do not share these concerns. However, the majority of ICT practitioners who are parents report receiving support from their coworkers regarding their parental responsibilities. The analysis highlights common challenges faced by parents in the ICT industry, including balancing work and family responsibilities, workplace discrimination against women, and a lack of organizational support for parents. Nevertheless, there is a growing acknowledgment of the need for inclusive policies and mutual support to address these challenges.

Analysis of symptoms and quality of life of people with prolonged diagnosis of COVID-19, and the efficacy of an intervention in primary care using ICT

This is a ranzomized clinical study called: “Analysis of symptoms and quality of life of people with prolonged diagnosis of COVID-19, and the efficacy of an intervention in primary care using ICT”, approved in mid-2020, with reference number ISRCTN91104012. The main objetive is to analyse the overall effectiveness and cost-efficiency of a mobile application (APP) as a community health asset (HA) with recommendations and recovery exercises created bearing in mind the main symptoms presented by Long COVID patients in order to improve their quality of life, as well as other secondary variables, such as the number and severity of ongoing symptoms, physical and cognitive functions, affective state, and sleep quality. The first step was to design and develop the technologic community resource, the APP, following the steps involved in the process of recommending health assets (RHA). After this, a protocol of a randomised clinical trial for analysing its effectiveness and cost-efficiency as a HA was developed. The participants will be assigned to: (1st) usual treatment by the primary care practitioner (TAU), as a control group; and (2nd) TAU + use of the APP as a HA and adjuvant treatment in their recovery + three motivational interviews (MI), as an interventional group. An evaluation will be carried out at baseline with further assessments three and six months following the end of the intervention.
