<p>This dataset was used as input to a physics-informed neural network (PINN) model developed to estimate continuous soil water retention curves (SWRCs). It includes basic soil properties such as particle-size distribution (sand, silt, clay), organic carbon content (OC), bulk density (BD), and measurements of soil water retention at various matric potentials. These inputs allow the model to learn the relationship between soil properties and water retention, via both data and embedded physical constraints. This data set consists of 4,200 Danish soil samples with measurements spanning the wet and dry ends of the SWRC.&nbsp;</p>

CLM/CTSM glacier input datasets used for study on evaluation variable-resolution CESM2 in High-Mountain Asia

<p><strong>General Info</strong></p> <p>This data archive contains the updated&nbsp;glacier-cover&nbsp;and glacier regions&nbsp;for the Community Land Model version 5 (CLM5)/Community Terrestrial Systems Model (CTSM). The updated glacier-cover and glacier regions are&nbsp;used for a study on the evaluation of variable-resolution (VR)&nbsp;CESM2 in High Mountain Asia (<a href="https://tc.copernicus.org/preprints/tc-2022-256/">https://tc.copernicus.org/preprints/tc-2022-256/</a>). The data archive also&nbsp;contains the model scripts and input files that have been used to&nbsp;create the glacier-cover dataset. Nutrient Inputs in Mesocosms of an Oligotrophic Lake Fail to Sustain an Algal Bloom, Lake George, NY, 2019

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) pose a significant threat to aquatic ecosystems, and their frequency in oligotrophic lakes—previously thought resistant to such blooms due to their low nutrient levels—has been increasing. This challenges the traditional view that nutrient loading, a major driver of HABs, is less relevant in low-nutrient systems. To investigate whether nutrient enrichment plays a role in HAB development in oligotrophic lakes, we used in-lake mesocosms to assess the effects of varying nitrogen and phosphorus levels on pelagic communities over a 4-week period. The experiment utilized 20 mesocosms (~2,000 L each), with varying phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) concentrations, all maintaining a 30:1 N:P ratio, representing ten distinct nutrient levels (235:8 µg/L [control], 600:20 µg/L, 1200:40 µg/L, 1800:60 µg/L, 2400:80 µg/L, 3000:100 µg/L, 3600:120 µg/L, 4200:140 µg/L, 4800:160 µg/L, and 5400:180 µg/L). Nutrients were added twice a week (Tuesdays and Fridays) to sustain the concentrations, with two replicates for each of the ten treatments, totaling 20 experimental units. Water samples were collected to assess water chemistry at two points during the experiment (days 12 and 26). The water chemistry variables measured included total phosphorus (TP), total dissolved phosphorus (TDP), dissolved reactive phosphorus (DRP), total nitrogen (TN), nitrate, nitrite, ammonium, and chlorophyll a. Phytoplankton abundance and abiotic conditions (dissolved oxygen, temperature, pH, and turbidity) were monitored on days 5, 7, 10, 13, 17, 19, 21. Grab samples were also collected on day 12 and 26 to identify phytoplankton species/abundance and zooplankton abundance. In this experiment, nutrient additions enhanced the fluorescence of chlorophyll a (indicative of total phytoplankton) and phycocyanin (a proxy for cyanobacteria), these increases plateaued at low nutrient levels and were transient. CONTEXT: The southwestern United States is experiencing an increasingly warmer and drier climate that is affecting cattle production systems of the region. Adaptation strategies are needed that will not compromise environmental quality or profitability. Options include the use of desert-adapted beef cattle biotypes, such as Rarámuri Criollo cattle, and crossbreds of Criollo with more traditional British breeds. Currently, most calves raised in the Southwest are grain finished, often with irrigated crops produced in the hydrologically-threatened Ogallala Aquifer region. A viable alternative may be grass finishing with the rainfed forage of the arid and semi-arid rangeland of the Southwest or in the temperate grasslands of the Northern Plains. OBJECTIVE: Compare the environmental impacts and production costs of grain-finishing in Texas and grass-finishing in the Northern plains and the Southwest with traditional Angus cattle vs. Criollo and Criollo x Angus cattle. METHODS: Nine supply chain strategies were simulated using the Integrated Farm System Model to compare farm-gate life cycle intensities of greenhouse gas emissions (carbon footprint), fossil energy footprint, nitrogen footprint, blue water footprint and production costs using representative (appropriate soils, climate, and management) ranch and feedlot operations. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: For both finishing options (grass, grain), Criollo x Angus cattle had the best environmental (3%-27% lower), and production cost (4-23% lower) outcomes followed by pure Criollo and then Angus cattle. Crossbred production combined the lower feed supplementation requirements of Criollo cows with heavier final carcasses of offspring from Angus genetics. Crossbred cattle with grass finishing in the Southwest or Northern Plains outperformed on most environmental variables as well as production costs, mostly due to reduced external input requirements (primarily feed). This dataset contains perennial grass tiller and stolon counts collected starting in 2012 for a long-term precipitation and nutrient manipulation experiment at the Jornada Basin LTER site in southern New Mexico, U.S.A. This experiment uses precipitation shelters and irrigation treatments to manipulate water inputs, and fertilization treatments to alter nitrogen input to 2.5 x 2.5 meter plots in a desert grassland. Tillers and stolons of perennial grasses were counted in each plot in 2012, 2013 and 2014. This is an ongoing study and the dataset will be updated as needed.

SBC LTER: Beach: Local and regional kelp wrack inputs to sandy beaches

These data describe the inputs of giant kelp (Macrocystis pyrifera) to sandy beach ecosystems in the Santa Barbara Channel. The local dataset details the average number of kelp plants deposited in 100 m wide segments of coastline over the course of 66 months, from August 2015 through July 2021. Data are presented as the overall average as well as the seasonal averages for each segment. The coordinates of each segment are provided as well as the overall average dry beach width and the beach orientation for each segment. The regional dataset details the average wrack cover from cross-shore transects and the average number of kelp plants deposited on the 1 km stretch of beach for 24 sandy beach sites in a 100 km long region of coastline along the Santa Barbara Channel. The coordinates of each site are provided as well as the dry beach width and the beach orientation. Data are contained in two tables: 1) the local 25 km dataset with 250 total segments, and 2) the 100 km regional dataset with 24 total study beaches.
