Sausage Instabilities on Top of Kinking Lengthening Current-Carrying Magnetic Flux Tubes - Data underlying figures 3 & 4

<p><strong>Background</strong></p> <p>This is the code used in the analysis and to generate all plots of the paper &quot;Sausage Instabilities on Top of Kinking Lengthening Current-Carrying Magnetic Flux Tubes&quot;.</p> <p>Flux tube experiments can be classified by the flux tube&rsquo;s evolution in a configuration space described by a normalized inverse aspect-ratio k̄ and current-to-magnetic flux ratio &lambda;̄. A lengthening current-carrying magnetic flux tube traverses this k̄ - &lambda;̄ space and crosses stability boundaries. We derive a single general criterion for the onset of the sausage and kink instabilities in idealized magnetic flux tubes with core and skin currents. The criterion indicates a dependence of the stability boundaries on current<br> profiles and shows overlapping kink and sausage unstable regions in the k̄ - &lambda;̄ space with two free parameters. Numerical investigation of the stability criterion reduces the number of free parameters to a single one that describes the current profile, and confirms the overlapping sausage and kink unstable regions in k̄ - &lambda;̄ space. A lengthening, ideal current-carrying magnetic flux tube can therefore become sausage unstable after it becomes kink unstable.</p> <p><strong>Accesing Data</strong></p> <p>This data set contains:</p> <ol> <li>SQL database: output.db</li> <li>Human readable database in JSON format: output.txt</li> <li>Data arrays: 3 dated .npz files</li> <li>Human readable data arrays: 8 .dat files.</li> </ol> <p>The database files list all parameters of a run of the analysis code. The date identifies the run. The SQL database can be inspected with e.g. Firefox&#39;s SQLite Manager extension.&nbsp;The contents of the human redable output.txt file are identical.</p> <p>The data arrays include the&nbsp;k̄ meshes and &nbsp;&lambda;̄ meshes which define the coordiante system and arrays&nbsp;of normalized&nbsp;<span class="math-tex">\(\delta W\)</span>&nbsp;for kink and susage modes.</p> <p>Each .npz file contains arrays defining the k̄ - &lambda;̄ space and the stability calculation results.</p> <p>Each .npz file is an array file generated with python numpy.savez(). Turbulence in Simulated Tropical Instability Wave

This dataset consists of fields output from a 1/20° regional simulation of the Tropical Pacific ocean. The data are hourly averaged and cover the time period of a single Tropical Instability Wave. Data are extracted at a central longitude of 110°W and one grid point to the east and west of that longitude. The fields describe the modulation of ocean mixing by the Tropical Instability Wave.

Negative Differential Resistance, Instability, and Critical Transition in Lightning Leader

<p>There is a&nbsp;challenging issue of die out and restrike of leaders in a burst of lightning event,&nbsp;such as multiplicity of strokes in grounded flash or recoil leader in cloud flash, although the argument involves the effects of channel characteristic of negative differential resistance instability, there is internal consistency about the instability, the bi-stability of insulation and induction and their critical transition from the view of bifurcation theory of nonlinear dynamics. In this paper, we examined the differential resistance characteristics of the leader-streams lighting system, we associate the leader-streamer channel differential resistance characteristics and sign change with channel state and instability transitions. The critical current and potential difference conditions for the stable transition of the leader-streamer channel are investigated. It is found that the necessary current required for the stable development of the channel is increased with the length of the leader channel, while the internal channel electric field of the leader decreases accordingly.</p>

Data from: A new trophic specialization buffers a top predator against climate-driven resource instability

<p>Intraspecific phenotypic variability is key to respond to environmental changes and anomalies. However, documenting the emergence of behavioral diversification in natural populations has remained elusive due to the difficulty of observing such phenomenon at the right time and place. Here, we investigated how the emergence of a new trophic strategy in a population subjected to high fluctuations in the availability of its main trophic resource (migrating songbirds) affected the breeding performance, population structure, and population fitness of a specialized color polymorphic predator, the Eleonora's falcon from the Canary Islands. Using long-term data (2007-2022), we found that the exploitation of an alternative prey (a local petrel species) was associated with the growth of a previously residual falcon colony. Pairs in this colony laid earlier and raised more fledglings than in the other established colonies. The specialization on petreles increased over time, independently of annual fluctuations in prey availability. Importantly, however, the positive effect of petrel consumption on productivity was stronger in years with lower food availability. This trophic diversification was further associated with the genetically-determined color morph, with dark individuals preying more frequently on petreles than pale ones, which might promote the long-term maintenance of genotypic and phenotypic diversity. We empirically demonstrate how the emergence of an alternative trophic strategy can buffer populations against harsh environmental fluctuations by stabilizing their productivity.</p>

Avoiding high frequency thermoacoustic instabilities in cyrogenic rocket engines using Bayesian deep learning

<p>Destructive high-frequency thermoacoustic instabilities have afflicted liquid propellant rocket engine development for decades. The 90 MW cryogenic liquid oxygen/hydrogen multi-injector research combustor BKD operated by DLR Lampoldshausen is a platform that allows their study under realistic conditions. In this study, we use data from BKD experimental campaigns where the static chamber pressure and reactor-oxidizer ratio were varied such that the first tangential mode of the combustor is excited under some conditions. We train a Bayesian neural network to predict the occurence probability of thermoacoustic instabilities 500 ms in the future, given the power spectra of the most recent 300 ms sample of the dynamic pressure data and mass flowrate control signals as input. The Bayesian nature of our algorithms allow us to work in this &quot;small data&quot; setting where the size of our dataset is restricted by the effort and expense associated with each experimental run, without making overconfident extrapolations. We find that the network is able to accurately forecast the occurence probability of instabilities on unseen experimental runs. We envision that these algorithms will eventually be used online by rocket engine controllers to avoid regions of thermoacoustic instabilities.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>

On the Rayleigh–Kuo criterion for the tertiary instability of zonal flows

<p>These are&nbsp;the supplementary Matlab codes that can be used to generate the data in figure 3, 4, and 6 in the manuscript &quot;On the Rayleigh--Kuo criterion for the tertiary instability of zonal flows&quot;. The abstract of this manuscript reads as follows:</p> <p>This paper reports the stability conditions for intense zonal flows (ZFs) and the growth rate $\gamma_{\rm TI}$ of the corresponding &quot;tertiary&quot; instability (TI) within the generalized Hasegawa--Mima plasma model. The analytic calculation extends and revises Kuo&#39;s analysis of the mathematically similar barotropic vorticity equation for incompressible neutral fluids on a rotating sphere [H.-L. Kuo, J. Meteor. 6, 105 (1949)]; then, the results are applied to the plasma case. An error in Kuo&#39;s original result is pointed out. An explicit analytic formula for $\gamma_{\rm TI}$ is derived and compared with numerical calculations. It is shown that a ZF is TI-unstable under the Rayleigh--Kuo criterion known from geophysics plus the condition that the ZF wave number must exceed the inverse ion sound radius. For a sinusoidal ZF, these two necessary conditions combined together are also sufficient for the TI. For non-sinusoidal ZFs, the results are qualitatively consistent. As a corollary, there is no TI in the geometrical-optics limit, i.e., when the DW wavelength is small compared to the ZF scale. This also means that the traditional wave kinetic equation under the geometrical-optics assumption cannot adequately describe the ZF stability.</p>

Data and code for figures in "Two-tone optomechanical instability and its fundamental implications for backaction-evading measurements"

<p>Here we prepare the data and process scripts to reconstruct figure 4 of the paper (Two-tone optomechanical instability and its fundamental implications for backaction-evading measurements). The folder contains several subfolders and files:</p> <p>&ldquo;Raw data&rdquo;: In this folder, you can find the raw data recorded by measurement devices during the experiment. It follows the hierarchical structure. We have three pairs of folders corresponding to three cooperativities (3.5, 7, 14). One folder of each pair contains raw data files in text format (.dat) and the other one contains plots and a Numpy dictionary of the extracted parameter for each cooperativity (superdict.npy). If you need to redo the extraction process from the raw data you can simply run &ldquo;181031_CXX_Final_NOQT_BAE_2D_post_processeing.py&rdquo; (XX: 3.5 or 7 or 14) python code to rewrite superdict.npy files and replot all plots in the Raw data folder.<br> &ldquo;NRBcodes&rdquo;: A side package for the circle fit (Lorentzian fitting) in the complex plane.<br> &ldquo;Dicts&rdquo;: A folder containing Numpy dictionaries needed for the final plot. &ldquo;superdictXX.npy&rdquo; are copies of Numpy dictionaries in the Raw data folder. &ldquo;powers_XX.npy&rdquo; and &ldquo;Ds_nor_XX.npy&rdquo; are Numpy dictionaries needed for the theory plots.
