Data from: Proteomic analysis of barley mapping population subjected to drought identifies proteins with genotype×environment interaction and pQTLs

Drought is one of the major abiotic stresses negatively influencing crop yield and is a serious issue in modern agriculture. To achieve further substantial crop improvements in terms of drought resistance it is necessary to incorporate scientific results into breeding strategies. However, most of the data on plant drought responses arises mostly from small-scale studies and, therefore, its use in breeding programs is very limited. Here, we present the results of the large-scale proteomic analysis performed on barley recombinant inbred lines (RILs) and their parental genotypes subjected to drought, applied shortly before tillering. The conducted proteomic analyses enabled us to monitor drought-induced proteome changes in leaf and root tissue, and to identify proteins that responded to drought in a genotype-specific manner, for instance Rubisco activase, luminal binding protein, phosphoglycerate mutase, glutathione S-transferase, heat shock proteins as well as enzymes involved in phenylpropanoid biosynthesis. We also demonstrated feasibility of incorporating proteomic data resulting from large-scale study into genetic linkage analysis, which constitutes a fundament in biotechnology-driven breeding strategies.

Data from: Mapping the imprint of biotic interactions on β-diversity

Investigating how trophic interactions influence the β-diversity of meta-communities is of paramount importance to understanding the processes shaping biodiversity distribution. Here, we apply a statistical method for inferring the strength of spatial dependencies between pairs of species groups. Using simulated community data generated from a multi-trophic model, we showed that this method can approximate biotic interactions in multi-trophic communities based on β-diversity patterns across groups. When applied to soil multi-trophic communities along an elevational gradient in the French Alps, we found that fungi make a major contribution to the structuring of β-diversity across trophic groups. We also demonstrated that there were strong spatial dependencies between groups known to interact specifically (e.g. plant-symbiotic fungi, bacteria-nematodes) and that the influence of environment was less important than previously reported in the literature. Our method paves the way for a better understanding and mapping of multi-trophic communities through space and time.

Interactive maps: Unveiling hidden risks in healthcare from flood-induced transportation disruption

We provide interactive maps in HTML format, viewable in standard web browsers, to illustrate the impact of flood events (indicated by the index in the title) on specific regions, focusing on hospitals at risk. This collection includes 321 maps, each representing a hospital where the change in service population exceeds 0.3. Hovering over the hospital symbols (marked with a plus) reveals meta information, including service population details before and after a flood event. Additionally, hovering over the polygons provides further insights into the hospital in focus, offering a detailed view of each facility’s status and impact zone.

Data from: Genome-wide mapping in a house mouse hybrid zone reveals hybrid sterility loci and Dobzhansky-Muller interactions

Mapping hybrid defects in contact zones between incipient species can identify genomic regions contributing to reproductive isolation and reveal genetic mechanisms of speciation. The house mouse features a rare combination of sophisticated genetic tools and natural hybrid zones between subspecies. Male hybrids often show reduced fertility, a common reproductive barrier between incipient species. Laboratory crosses have identified sterility loci, but each encompasses hundreds of genes. We map genetic determinants of testis weight and testis gene expression using offspring of mice captured in a hybrid zone between M. musculus musculus and M. m. domesticus. Many generations of admixture enables high-resolution mapping of loci contributing to these sterility-related phenotypes. We identify complex interactions among sterility loci, suggesting multiple, non-independent genetic incompatibilities contribute to barriers to gene flow in the hybrid zone.
