Stable carbon and nitrogen isotope data from Arctic coastscapes associated with coastal invertebrate and fish food webs, 1999-2022
Stable carbon and nitrogen isotope data are commonly used to elucidate food web structure and partition food source importance to consumers. Here, stable isotope data were gathered from across the coastal Arctic to assess how differences in coastal type (i.e., coastscape) and longitudinal region differ across the Arctic. Data were collected between 1999-2022.
Sulfate Concentrations and Sulfur Stable Isotope Ratios in Surface Water from the Marlborough and Waipara Winegrowing Regions, South Island of New Zealand, 2023
Agricultural sulfur (S) additions are a major anthropogenic source of S to the environment, yet our understanding of the downstream transformations and potential environmental consequences of these S inputs remains incomplete. This dataset includes surface water samples from the Marlborough and Waipara winegrowing regions of the South Island of New Zealand, where frequent applications of S fungicide are widespread. Samples were analyzed for sulfate concentration and S stable isotope ratios – the combination of which forms the S “fingerprint”. We collected surface water samples during the winter of 2023 from a variety of different locations and land use types, including vineyards, forests, pastures, and urban areas. The data table includes water sample sulfate concentrations, sulfate-S stable isotope measurements, and the S stable isotope composition of commonly used S-containing fungicides and fertilizers for comparison.
Mass per tiller, nitrogen concentration, stable isotope ratios for carbon and nitrogen from the 1980-82 Eriophorum vaginatum reciprocal transplant experiment along a latitudinal gradient in interior Alaska collected in July, 2011
In 1980-1982, six transplant gardens were established along a latitudinal gradient in interior Alaska from Eagle Creek, AK in the south to Prudhoe Bay, AK in the north. Three sites, Toolik Lake (TL), Sagwon (SAG), and Prudhoe Bay (PB) are north of the continental divide and the remaining three, Eagle Creek (EC), No Name Creek (NN), and Coldfoot (CF), are south of the continental divide. Each garden consisted of 10 individual Eriophorum vaginatum tussocks transplanted back to their home-site, as well as 10 individuals from each of the other transplant sites. The gardens were harvested in 2011. Important variables are garden name, source population, mass per tiller, nitrogen concentration, and stable isotope ratios for Carbon and Nitrogen.
Carbon and nitrogen isotopes and concentrations in terrestrial plants from a six-year (2006-2012) fertilization experiment at the Arctic LTER, Toolik Field Station, Alaska.
The data set describes stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes and carbon and nitrogen concentrations from an August 2012 pluck of a fertilization experiment begun in 2006. Fertilization was with nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P). Fertilization levels included control, F2, F5, and F10, with F2 corresponding to yearly additions of 2 g/m2 N and 1 g/m2 P, F5 corresponding to yearly additions of 5 g/m2 N and 2.5 g/m2 P, and F10 corresponding to yearly additions of 10 g/m2 N and 5 g/m2 P. After harvest, plants were separated by species and then by tissue. Tissues were then dried, ground and analyzed for stable isotopes and concentrations at the University of New Hampshire stable isotope laboratory.

Rainfall Stable Isotopes collected at Florida International University-MMC (FCE LTER), Miami, Florida, USA, October 2007 - ongoing
δ18O and δ2H values for precipitation collected at the Modesto A. Maidique Campus of Florida International University (FIU) relative to Vienna Standard Mean Ocean Water. Rainfall was collected from the roof of AHC-1 building (25.75772 ºN, 80.37108 ºW) from October 2007 to November 2022 using an Aerochemitrics wet/dry collector. Since December 2022, rainfall has been collected using a Palmex Rain Collector located in the FIU Organic Garden (25.75490 ºN, 80.37985 ºW). Oxygen and hydrogen isotope ratios were measured on a Los Gatos Research DLT-100 Liquid-Water Isotope Analyzer in the Hydrogeology laboratory at FIU since the project inception.
Isotopic Variation of Soil Macrofossils from Shark River Slough, Everglades National Park (FCE) in December 2004
These data represent stable isotopic signatures of selected macrofossils from soil cores from Shark Slough sites, including FCE LTER site SRS3. Soils from 1-cm depth increments were analyzed for macrofossil content (mainly seeds) and seeds were processed for d13C and d15N isotopic signatures. These analyses contribute to a paleoecological study to quantify past changes in vegetation and soil accumulation in relation to past climate variation, fire occurrences and water management.

13C and 15N stable isotope data from seagrasses collected during visits to FCE LTER core research sites TS/Ph7a, TS/Ph8, TS/Ph9, TS/Ph10 and TS/Ph11.
Shark catches (longline), water temperatures, salinities, and dissolved oxygen levels, and stable isotope values in the Shark River Slough, Everglades National Park (FCE LTER), Florida, USA, May 2005 - ongoing
This dataset provides information on the catches of sharks in the Shark River Slough in relation to physical factors including dissolved oxygen, water temperature, salinity, and distance upstream. Analysis of data collected suggest that distance from the Gulf of Mexico and dissolved have the largest effects on shark catch rates, with most juvenile bull sharks being caught in Tarpon Bay. This dataset includes all sharks caught on longline gear, their morphometric data, and CNS stable isotope analysis for selected individuals.
Dissolved Organic Carbon Stable Isotopes and Lignin Phenols from Everglades National Park (FCE LTER), South Florida, USA, January 2019 - ongoing
Estuarine and coastal waters are home to more than half of the world's population and provide many social and economic benefits to society. Additionally, these ecosystems are sites of intense carbon cycling and are under pressure from changing land uses and climate. DOM is functionally defined as the OM passed through a 0.7 µm borosilicate glass fiber filter (GF/F) and is primarily made up of viruses, bacteria, colloids, lignins, humic substances, organic acids, and other small organic compounds (Repeta, 2015). Approximately 50% of DOM is generally considered to be dissolved organic carbon (DOC) (Stedmon and Nelson, 2015). Thus, DOC can be used as a proxy for quantifying DOM. Whole water samples were collected monthly from three different transects representing marl-dominated (Taylor Slough), peat-dominated (Shark River Slough), and seagrass-dominated (Florida Bay) environments. The water was filtered using 0.7 µm porosity glass fiber filters, then acidified to pH 2 and stored at 4°C until processing occurred. DOC concentration and the stable isotope ratio of DOC (δ13C-DOC) was measured on an OI Analytical TOC analyzer coupled to an Agilent Delta V plus Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometer using high-temperature combustion (Lalonde et al., 2014). Dissolved vanillyl (vanillin, acetovanillone, vanillin acid), syringyl (syringaldehyde, acetosyringone, syringic acid), cinnamyl (p-coumaric acid, ferulic acid), and 3,5-hydroxybenzoic acid lignin phenols were isolated from ~2 liters of 0.7 µm filtered, acidified (pH 2) water by solid phase extraction (SPE) using 1g PPL cartridges that were pre-conditioned using pH 2 water and methanol. SPE cartridges were extracted using methanol, then dried and redissolved in 2N NaOH. Cupric oxide oxidation and liquid-liquid ethyl acetate extraction were used to extract lignin oxidation products (Hedges and Ertel, 1982, modified by Goñi and Hedges, 1995; Louchouarn et al., 2000; Goñi and Montgomery, 2000; Benner and Kaiser, 2011). Briefly, NaO
Stable isotope values of consumers, producers, and organic matter in the Shark River Slough and Taylor Slough, Everglades National Park (FCE LTER), Florida, USA, 2019 – ongoing
Wetland food webs have often been characterized as detrital-based ‘brown’ energy pyramids, whereas the relative role of autotrophic (‘green’) vs. microbial (‘brown’) energy sources falls along a continuum set by physical drivers, as well as autochthonous and allochthonous inputs (Moore et al. 2004; Evans-White & Halvorson 2017) that change with ecosystem development (Schmitz et al. 2006). In the Florida Coastal Everglades (FCE), metabolic imbalances, including the collapse of calcareous periphyton mats, begin with a loss of foundation species primary production and legacy organic matter (Gaiser et al. 2006). This process likely enhances heterotrophic microbial productivity (Schulte 2016) and the supply of detrital energy to consumers by changing bioavailable and recalcitrant carbon supplies (Baggett et al. 2013). A shift from complex periphyton communities to transient planktonic communities under elevated P exposure reduces habitat structure and animal refuges but increases ‘green’ energy supplies and edibility (Trexler et al. 2015; Naja et al. 2017). Multiple sites (n=9) within the FCE were selected to document changes in coastal food webs as a result of eutrophication and increasing hydrologic variability. The project began in 2019 and is currently ongoing. References: Baggett, L. P., Heck, K. L., Frankovich, T. A., Armitage, A. R., & Fourqurean, J. W. (2013). Stable isotope (δ¹⁸O and δ²H) measurements of water column and benthic samples from Lake Joyce, McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica, November 2014
Water column and benthic samples were collected from Lake Joyce, a perennially ice-covered lake in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica, to support stable isotope analyses. Water column samples were collected in November 2014 at depths ranging from 6 to 53 m using a Niskin bottle deployed through a borehole in the lake ice. The deepest sample (53 m) was collected with concurrent live-drop camera observations to ensure that sampling did not disrupt the underlying sediments. Benthic water samples were collected by divers along the delta front on the north side of the lake, targeting topographic low points at depths between 10 and 28.2 m to assess potential pooling of hyporheic discharge. These samples were taken within ~5 cm of the sediment-water interface using 60 mL syringes. This data package includes stable water isotope measurements (δ¹⁸O and δ²H) to support investigations of spatial variability in lake water isotopic composition and potential hydrologic inputs.
Net community production (NCP) and gross oxygen production (GOP), based on oxygen-argon ratios and triple oxygen isotopes, from seasonal NES-LTER Transect cruises in 2018
This data package provides net community production (NCP) and gross oxygen production (GOP, a measure of gross primary production) for the winter, spring, summer, and fall Northeast U.S. Shelf Long-Term Ecological Research (NES-LTER) Transect cruises in 2018. Two tables are provided: a high-frequency table with NCP rates calculated from measurements of O2/Ar made continuously by an at-sea equilibrator inlet mass spectrometer (EIMS), and a low-frequency table with both NCP and GOP rates calculated for discrete samples measured post-cruise. The GOP rates were calculated from triple O2 isotopic (TOI) ratios. These data are derived from the EIMS and TOI data for the NES-LTER Transect cruises in EDI data package knb-lter-nes.6.3.

Oxygen-argon dissolved gas ratios using Equilibrator Inlet Mass Spectrometry (EIMS) and triple oxygen isotopes (TOI) from NES-LTER Transect cruises, ongoing since 2018
In order to calculate net community production (NCP) rates on Northeast U.S. Shelf Long-Term Ecological Research (NES-LTER) transect cruises, gas tracer data were collected with a continuous at-sea mass spectrometer. The ratio of O2/Ar, measured continuously from underway water, yields 8,000-15,000 rates of NCP per cruise. Discrete water samples (50 to 150 per cruise) were collected for triple oxygen isotope (TOI) analysis to estimate gross primary production (GPP) rates and ratios of NCP/GPP. Along-shelf (upstream-downstream) transects were conducted in addition to the main across-shelf transect. This data package provides two types of data tables for NES-LTER transect cruises beginning in 2018: a high-frequency continuous Equilibration Inlet Mass Spectrometer (EIMS) table, provided by year, and a low-frequency discrete triple oxygen isotope (TOI) table with all years combined. Rates calculated from these measurements are provided as separate packages, per year, in the EDI repository.

Antarctic time series of temperature, precipitation, and stable isotopes in precipitation from the ECHAM5/MPI-OM-wiso past1000 climate model simulation
<p>This data set contains time series of two-metre air temperature (tas), surface temperature (ts), total precipitation (pr), oxygen-18 isotopic composition in precipitation (oxy), and deuterium isotopic composition in precipitation (dtr) from the past-millennium (800-1999 CE) simulation of the fully coupled ECHAM5/MPI-OM-wiso atmosphere-ocean general circulation model equipped with stable isotope diagnostics (Sjolte et al., 2018, Werner et al., 2016) used in the publication of Münch et al. (2021).</p> <p>The data here are provided for the Antarctic region, i.e., all model grid cells south of 60° S. The model's atmospheric component was run with a T31 spectral resolution (3.75° x 3.75°) and with 19 vertical levels, resulting in a total of N = 768 model grid cells covered by this data set. Note, however, that all time series off the continent of Antarctica have been set to NA values, so that the effectively available number of model grid cells is Neff = 442.</p> <p>Time series are provided at the original monthly resolution of the model output and on annual resolution obtained from the monthly resolution data. At annual resolution, the temperature and isotopic composition data are available as normal time averages and as precipitation-weighted time averages. In addition to the time series, the spatial field of time-invariant means is supplied, also as normal and precipitation-weighted time averages.</p> <p>Data are available as netcdf files and as R data files. In addition, processing code (bash and R scripts) are provided to reproduce the processing from monthly to annnual and time-invariant resolution and to read the data into the R data format. To process the R data, you will need the CRAN packages "ncdf4" and "lubridate", and the package "pfields" available on GitHub (see References).</p>
