Cascade project at North Temperate Lakes LTER - Daily data for key variables in whole lake experiments on early warnings of critical transitions, Paul and Peter Lakes, 2008-2011
Peter Lake's food web was altered by adding largemouth bass at a slow rate while monitoring key food web constituents including littoral minnow abundance indexed as catch per trap per hour, zooplankton biomass, and concentration of chlorophyll a. Paul Lake was manipulated and the same variables were measured there. In Peter Lake, we expected littoral catch of minnows to first increase as minnows moved into the littoral zone due to the threat of bass predation and then decrease due to bass predation. We expected zooplankton biomass to increase as minnows moved into the littoral zone. We expected chlorophyll to decrease due to increased grazing by zooplankton. We expected that variance and autocorrelation of chlorophyll would increase as the food web passed a critical transition. We expected that the time series in Paul Lake would represent the normal variability of an unmanipulated lake

<p>The dataset presented here is related to the article by Leon-Marcos et al. 2025: "Modelling emission and transport of key components of primary marine organic aerosol using the global aerosol-climate model ECHAM6.3–HAM2.3" accepted for publication in GMD. It comprises global fields of the FESOM2.1-REcoM3 biogeochemistry model tracers employed to calculate the ocean biomolecule concentration that serve as input data for the aerosol model. Additionally, the ECHAM6.3–HAM2.3 code of the marine aerosol implementation and the required scripts to run the model experiments are provided here. The aerosol-climate model simulation results of the marine aerosol emission, as well as the evaluation of the model results compared to observations, are also included. MedAID_Key performance indicators for gilthead seabream on-growing under summer temperatures
<p>This data set contains the results from a nutritional trial performed at the Centre of Marine Sciences of Algarve (CCMAR, Faro, Portugal) within the framework of WP2 of the MedAID project (Mediterranean Aquaculture Integrated Development, Horizon 2020, GA number 727315). This experiment evaluated the impacts of protein to lipid ratios in low fishmeal/fish oil diets on key performance indicators of gilthead seabream (<em>Sparus aurata</em>, initial weight: 100 g ± 7 g) on-grown during summer temperature conditions. Monero: Public Keys of spent TXOs
<p>Monero's untraceability is based on the sampling of decoy inputs for each real transaction input. If a decoy input is a reference to an output which is known to be spent, it does not contribute to the size of the anonymity set of the real input. To prevent the sampling of spent outputs as decoys, the blackballing tool (released together with Monero v.0.12) can be used.</p> <p>This data set provides a list of public keys which should be avoided as mixins. It consists of the following three files:</p> <ol> <li>Monero TX outputs which are known to be spent (spent_outputs.csv)</li> <li>Monero TX outputs which are at risk of being identified as spent, due to occuring in a ring with only 2 or 3 possible inputs (risky_outputs.csv)</li> <li>Monero TX outputs which may have been spent on either the MoneroV or the Monero Original blockchain and are therefore at a higher risk to be identified. Adipose tissue plasticity in pheochromocytoma patients reveals a key role of the splicing machinery in human adipose browning
<p>RNA-sequencing counts data from omental adipose tissue from control individuals (C1-3) and patients with pheochromocytoma (P1-4) for whole genes (genes-counts.tsv) and individual isoforms (isoform-counts.tsv). Additional details regarding recruited individuals are available in the associated manuscript.</p> <p>Tissue fragments (~150 mg) of adipose biopsies from controls and pheochromocytoma patients were homogenized using a metal bead-based mechanical procedure in a TissueLyser® (QIAGEN, Düsseldorf, Germany). Total RNA was isolated from tissue homogenates using a NucleoSpin® RNA kit (Macherey-Nagel, Dueren, Germany) following the manufacturer’s protocol. mRNA was purified from 2 μg of total RNA using oligo-dT beads; it was then fragmented, retrotranscribed with random primers, and subjected to second-strand synthesis to create double-stranded cDNA fragments. Adaptor ligation, purification of 200-base pair cDNA fragments, amplification of the purified fragments, and library preparation were performed as previously reported by our laboratory. Before sequencing, the RNA integrity number (RIN) of each sample was determined using an Agilent Bioanalyzer 2100; samples with RIN ≥ 7.5 were used for RNA-sequencing. The cDNA library quality and quantity were further analyzed as previously described. Libraries yielding satisfactory results were sequenced on an Illumina HiSeq 2000 sequencer (DNAvision, Charleroi, Belgium). The average reads per sample was 45 million; this level of coverage was previously shown to provide sufficient sequencing depth for gene expression quantification and transcript detection. Quality control of reads was performed using FastQC (version 0.11.8; bioinformatics.babraham.ac.uk/projects/fastqc). Gene expression was quantified using Salmon version 1.1.0 with the additional parameters “– seqBias – gcBias – validateMappings”. GENCODE version 31 (GRCh38.p12) was used as the reference genome and indexed using default parameters; this resulted in 175,775 transcripts corresponding to 35,183 genes.</p>

The abstract below was extracted from the Level 0 data package and is included for context: The Ecological Survey of Central Arizona (ESCA) is an extensive field survey and integrated inventory designed to capture key ecological indicators of the CAP LTER study area consisting of the urbanized, suburbanized, and agricultural areas of metropolitan Phoenix, and the surrounding Sonoran desert. The survey is conducted every five years at approximately 200 sample plots (30m x 30m) that were located randomly using a tessellation-stratified dual-density sampling design. Study plots cover habitats throughout the CAP LTER study area ranging from native Sonoran desert sites to residential yards to an airport tarmac. In 2010, the survey was expanded to include an assessment of residential parcels overlapping the survey plot at sites in residential areas. Many of the same variables that are measured in the 30m x 30m survey plot are measured in the parcel, including an inventory of perennial plants, and the biovolume of trees. In addition, a detailed assessment of characteristics of the parcel is performed. Investigators interested in data from the broader Ecological Survey of Central Arizona that includes all survey plots should should search the data catalog for 'ecological survey of central arizona' or 'survey 200' to locate those and other data related to the CAP LTER's ESCA.
Determinants of flammability in the critically imperiled pine rocklands of Long Pine Key, 2021-2023
The distribution of plant functional trait values across environmental gradients reflects species’ adaptations to local abiotic conditions. Here, we measured plant composition and plant functional traits in 272 1m2 plots across an elevational and hydrological gradient on Long Pine Key in Everglades National Park between 2021 to 2023. At each site we measured average water depth, elevation, burn frequency, and species richness. We also measured the specific leaf area (SLA), leaf dry matter content (LDMC), leaf area (LA), maximum burn temperature (Temp_C), time to ignition (Ignite) and its inverse (IgniteINV), burn duration (Time), and percent burned (Percent) of five individuals of each species found within our plots. We then used the plant functional trait values SLA, LDMC, and LA, to calculate the CSR value of each plant species found within our plots following the methodology outlined in Pierce et al. (2016). We used these data to determine the distribution of trait values across Long Pine Key and to test for correlations between classic plant functional traits and plant flammability traits. The following abstract is from Price, R.M., Nuttle, W.K., Cosby, B.J., and Swart, P.K. 2007. Variation and Uncertainty in Evaporation from a Subtropical Estuary: Florida Bay, Estuaries and Coasts. 30(3): 497-506: Variation and uncertainty in estimated evaporation was determined over time and between two locations in Florida Bay, a subtropical estuary. Meteorological data were collected from September 2001 to August 2002 at Rabbit Key and Butternut Key within the Bay. Evaporation was estimated using both vapor flux and energy budget methods. The results were placed into a long-term context using 33 years of temperature and rainfall data collected in south Florida. Evaporation also was estimated from this long-term data using an empirical formula relating evaporation to clear sky solar radiation and air temperature. Evaporation estimates for the 12-mo period ranged from 144 to 175 cm yr21, depending on location and method, with an average of 163 cm yr21 (6 9%). Monthly values ranged from 9.2 to 18.5 cm, with the highest value observed in May, corresponding with the maximum in measured net radiation. Uncertainty estimates derived from measurement errors in the data were as much as 10%, and were large enough to obscure differences in evaporation between the two sites. Differences among all estimates for any month indicate the overall uncertainty in monthly evaporation, and ranged from 9% to 26%. Over a 33-yr period (1970 to 2002), estimated annual evaporation from Florida Bay ranged from 148 to 181 cm yr21, with an average of 166 cm yr21. Rainfall was consistently lower in Florida Bay than evaporation, with a long-term average of 106 cm yr21. Rainfall considered alone was uncorrelated with evaporation at both monthly and annual time scales; when the seasonal variation in clear sky radiation was also taken into account both net radiation and evaporation were significantly suppressed in months with high rainfall.
Mangrove soil phosphorus addition experiment from June 2013 to August 2013 at the mangrove peat soil mesocosms (FCE), Key Largo, Florida - Nutrients in Porewater, Soil and Roots
Sea levels in South Florida are conservatively predicted to rise by 0.60 m by 2060. The key mechanisms that maintain coastal peatland elevation against increasing sea level are organic matter accumulation via plant production and mineral sedimentation rates (Smoak et al. 2013). Although coastal mangrove soils are regularly inundated with seawater, little is know about the drivers of carbon sequestration (above or below ground) versus atmospheric efflux under different conditions of salinity and elevated phosphorus (P) associated with sea-level rise and storm surge. A recent study using mangrove peat soils found that seawater inundation reduced soil carbon efflux losses and salinity concentration had little effect on carbon retention or loss pathways. The next logical steps are to understand how plant-soil interactions affect above and below ground carbon processes, as well as how increases in P associated with storm surge from the Gulf of Mexico will influence physical, chemical and biological components of mangrove soils that are associated with above and belowground carbon processes. We will manipulate P in inundated peat soil mesocosms with disturbed and undisturbed red mangrove (Rhizophora mangle) seedlings to identify some of the fundamental mechanisms of soil elevation and carbon cycling given expected increases in seawater-based P availability in South Florida coastal mangroves.
