Genetic Diversity, Ecological Niches, and Climate Change Vulnerability of Aspens in the Upper Midwest:Leaf gas exchange
Quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides) is the most cosmopolitan tree species in North America and an important native at Cedar Creek and across the Midwest. Aspen stands are quite common through eastern, central, and northern Minnesota, and occur sporadically in cool, wet microclimates across the Great Plains. Currently, these stands are in decline, are poorly reproducing in the wild, and are suffering from a range of stresses. Climate change associated phenomena, drought and altered freeze-thaw cycles, have contributed to massive aspen dieback, especially in the American West. We have received funding from the National Park Service to assess the genetic diversity and hybrid status, age structure and health, ecological niche and historical rate of range contraction, and drought and freezing tolerance physiology of an aspen stand of interest at the Niobrara National Scenic River (NNSR) in northern Nebraska. As part of this project, we are also studying genetic diversity and physiological vulnerability to climate change in quaking and bigtooth (P. grandidentata) aspen populations in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, South Dakota, and Nebraska. We will use genetic markers to identify genetically unique stands and compare growth and survival of these to populations of the parent species under different drought and freeze-thaw conditions. This study will allow us to better pinpoint the causes of decline in the NNSR aspen stands and aspen stands across the upper Midwest, and potentially provide guidance to managers on the prioritization of particular stands for conservation or in identifying genetic sources for any ex situ conservation or assisted migration.
Data from: In silico study of the role of cell growth factors in photosynthesis using a virtual leaf tissue generator coupled to a microscale photosynthesis gas exchange model
Computational tools that allow in silico analysis of the role of cell growth and division on photosynthesis are scarce. We present a freely available tool that combines a virtual leaf tissue generator and a two-dimensional microscale model of gas transport during C3 photosynthesis. A total of 270 mesophyll geometries were generated with varying degree of growth anisotropy, growth extent and extent of schizogenous airspace formation in the palisade mesophyll. The anatomical properties of the virtual leaf tissue and microscopic cross sections of actual leaf tissue of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) were statistically compared. Model equations for transport of CO2 in the liquid phase of the leaf tissue were discretized over the geometries. The virtual leaf tissue generator produced a leaf anatomy of tomato that was statistically similar to real tomato leaf tissue. The response of photosynthesis to intercellular CO2 predicted by a model that used the virtual leaf tissue geometry compared well with measured values. The results indicate that the light-saturated rate of photosynthesis was influenced by interactive effects of extent and directionality of cell growth and degree of airspace formation through the exposed surface of mesophyll per leaf area. The tool could be used further in investigations of improving photosynthesis and gas exchange in relation to cell growth and leaf anatomy.
Leaf, stem, and root stable carbon isotope ratios and gas exchange data for 452 plants
<p>This dataset contains a compilation of stable carbon isotope ratios in leaves, stems, and roots for tree saplings and associated gas exchange data. It was used in a book chapter to test whether the relationship between carbon isotope discrimination and the ratio of intercellular to ambient carbon dioxide concentrations differs between leaves and woody tissues. The book chapter is entitled 'Carbon isotope effects in relation to CO2 assimilation by tree canopies' authored by Lucas A. Cernusak and Nerea Ubierna. It is part of the book entitled 'Stable Isotopes in Tree Rings' edited by Rolf T. Siegwolf, J. Renee Brooks, John Roden, and Matthias Saurer. The publisher of the book is Springer International Publishing, with publication in April 2022.</p>

LBA-ECO CD-02 Leaf Level Gas Exchange, Chemistry, and Isotopes, Amazonia, Brazil
This data set reports leaf gas flux and leaf properties from samples collected from trees, liana, pasture saplings, and pasture grass located at eight different sampling locations in the states of Para (south of Santarem) and Amazonas (near Manaus) from November 1999 through December 2003. Data are reported on photosynthesis measurements, CO2 response curves, light response curves, humidity response curves, and stomatal responses to variations of the leaf-to-air water vapor mole fraction deficit. Leaf weight, carbon and nitrogen concentrations as well as stable isotope signatures for 13C and 15N are reported for a subset of the samples. There is one comma-delimited ASCII data file with this data set.
BOREAS TF-11 SSA Fen Leaf Gas Exchange Data
The BOREAS TF-11 team gathered a variety of data to complement their tower flux measurements collected at the SSA Fen site. This data set contains single-leaf gas exchange data from the SSA Fen site during 1994 and 1995. These leaf gas exchange properties were measured for the dominant vascular plants using portable gas exchange systems.
