Short-term exposure to heatwave-like temperatures affects learning and memory in bumblebees

Global warming has been identified as a key driver of bee declines around the world. While it is clear that elevated temperatures during the spring and summer months – the principal activity period of many bee species – is a factor in this decline, exactly how temperature affects bee survival is unknown. In vertebrates, there is clear evidence that elevated ambient temperatures impair cognition but whether and how heat affects the cognitive abilities of invertebrates remains unclear. Cognitive skills in bees are essential for their survival as, to supply the hive with nutrition, workers must be able to learn and remember the location of the most rewarding floral resources. Here, we investigate whether temperature-related cognitive impairments could be a driver of bee declines by exploring the effect of short-term increases in ambient temperature on learning and memory. We found that, in comparison to bees that were tested at 25°C (a temperature that they would typically experience in summer), bees that were exposed to 32°C (a temperature that they will becoming increasingly exposed to during heatwave events) were significantly worse at forming an association between a coloured light and a sucrose reward and that their capacity to remember this association after just 1 hour was abolished. This study provides novel experimental evidence that even just a few hours of exposure to heatwave-like temperatures can severely impair the cognitive performance of insects. Such temperature-induced cognitive deficits could play an important role in explaining recent and future bee population declines.

Data from: Maze learning and memory in a decapod crustacean

Spatial learning is an ecologically important trait well studied in vertebrates and a few invertebrates yet poorly understood in crustaceans. We investigated the ability of European shore crabs, Carcinus maenas, to learn a complex maze over four consecutive weeks using food as a motivator. Crabs showed steady improvement during this conditioning period in both the time taken to find the food and in the number of wrong turns taken whilst doing so. Crabs also clearly remembered the maze as when placed back in the maze two weeks later and without any food, they all returned to the end of the maze in under eight minutes. Crabs that had not been conditioned to the maze (naïve animals) took far longer to reach the end and many (42 %) did not venture to the end of the maze at all during the one-hour study period. This study provides an initial description of spatial learning in a benthic decapod; a better appreciation of this adaptive trait in these animals will develop our understanding of resource exploitation by benthic crustaceans and their ecological roles.

Dataset: Learning efficient erasure protocols for an underdamped memory

Data set for the article "Learning efficient erasure protocols for an underdamped memory", by Nicolas Barros, Stephen Whitelam, Sergio Ciliberto, and Ludovic Bellon. Available on arXiv.

Inside the compressed file, you will find several folders.

It contains:

The pdf file of the article, as well as the movies provided in the supplementary material.

The folder "Single Erasure" contains the data used for all the protocols attempted in a single iteration. One can find the raw data of the time traces (position z, threshold z0, and center of the well z1) inside the folders "ErasureTo0" and "Erasureto1", depending on the direction of the erasure. Snapshots of the velocities and position pdf are inside "xPDF" and "vPDF", as well as the resulting work distribution "WorkPDF..." and the final success rates "Success...." (a 0 denotes a failure of the erasure protocol, 1 a success).

The folder "Chained Erasure" contains the results concerning the repetition of the erasure protocols, repeated 100 times with random targets. For each protocol, we provide the full time traces (z, z0, z1), as well as the resulting work distribution "W...", the mean temperature after each erasure "T...", and the survival rate "R...".

Files starting with z, z1, z0 correspond to the raw data of the experimental trajectories and protocols. Each line represents an independent realization of an experiment, with a sampling frequency of 2 MHz.

Please contact the authors for any additional data or questions about this dataset.
