Edward FitzGerald Life and Letters – Analysis of books and other material

These files form part of an archive of research material relating to the Life and Letters of Edward FitzGerald. The data have been compiled by independent researchers W H (Bill) Martin and Sandra Mason; their contact details are below. The files comprise a number of searchable listings of information about FitzGerald’s letters and other aspects of his life. The information formed input to a book on Edward FitzGerald which is referenced below.

This section of the archive contains three databases relating to FitzGerald’s library of books and other literary papers. The first of these, efgbooks, lists books known to have been in his possession from catalogues of sales of his effects after his death and a listing made by John Glyde (see references below). The second database, efgtrinitycatal, documents the holdings of books and other material owned by FitzGerald that are currently held in the Library of Trinity College, Cambridge. The third database, efgtrinitydetail, provides further details of the elements in the Trinity College FitzGerald holdings that we examined in more detail. An explanatory README text file contains tables showing the fields included in the databases and giving definitions of them and of the codings used where relevant.

Gold standard annotation of epilepsy clinic letters for the development of information extraction tools

This folder contains 200 synthetic letters, based on hospital outpatient epilepsy clinic consultations, written by neurology consultants, specialist trainees, and epilepsy specialist nurses. The letters were double annotated by trained researchers, according to annotation guidelines, uploaded separately (What and How of annotating with Markup). The 200 .ann annotation files are also included.

We used Markup (https://getmarkup.com) for annotation (the configuration file is within the uploaded set of annotations) with an epilepsy concept list based on the Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) ontology. All annotations were compared, reviewed, and corrected to form a gold standard annotation set.

MCR LTER: Coral Reef: Porites biomass data in support of Edmunds and Putnam Roy. Soc. Biology Letters 2020

Growth was measured every two to four months following collection of genotypes of the coral Porites lobata and P. lutea from the back reef of Mo'orea, French Polynesia, in 2018. Measurements include size, bouyant weight, biomass and environment conditions. These data support a manuscript submitted by P. Edmunds and H. Putnam in 2020 to Royal Society Biology Letters titled 'Science-based approach to using growth rate to assess coral performance and restoration outcomes'. This material is based upon work supported by the U.S. National Science Foundation under Grant No. OCE 16-37396 (and earlier awards) as well as a generous gift from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. Research was completed under permits issued by the French Polynesian Government (Délégation à la Recherche) and the Haut-commissariat de la République en Polynésie Francaise (DTRT) (Protocole d'Accueil 2005-2020). This work represents a contribution of the Moorea Coral Reef (MCR) LTER Site.

The Letters of Libanius Project (v0.1)

This is the first release for The Letters of Libanius Project. Libanius was a professor of rhetoric from 4th c. AD Antioch who left behind about 1544 letters. This release contains CSVs with metadata for 110 letters. A CSV and XML with the Greek text for the first 839 letters. The XML file is a heavily modified version of the file released by the Open Greek and Latin Project. It also contains GeoJSON files for some of the provinces in the Roman Empire at the end of the 4th c. Finally, it contains IPython notebooks that interact with that data.

Ground truth for Neue Zürcher Zeitung black letter period

The Neue Zürcher Zeitung (NZZ) has been publishing in black letter from its very first issue in 1780 until 1947. From this time period, we randomly sampled one frontpage per year, resulting in a total of 167 pages. We chose frontpages because they typically contain highly relevant material and because we want to make sure not to sample pages containing exclusively advertisements or stock information. During certain periods, the NZZ was published several times a day, and there were supplements, too. Due to incomplete metadata, the sampling included frontpages from supplements.

We then manually corrected the pages, so it can be used as a ground truth to improve the OCR of black letter in historical newspapers.
