The effects of light intensity and flow speed on biogeochemical variability within a fringing coral reef in Onna-son, Okinawa, Japan
<p>Global warming and ocean acidification are driving gradual declines in seawater dissolved oxygen concentrations and pH. Predicting how these changes will affect shallow, near-shore environments including coral reefs is challenging due to high natural variability on both spatial (10 m to km) and temporal (diel to seasonal) scales. To make predictions, it is first necessary to identify and quantify the drivers of this natural variability. While significant efforts have been devoted to characterising the influence from metabolic processes on coral reef seawater chemistry, less attention has been devoted to physical processes such as flow speed and light intensity. Here, we measured seawater flow, photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), pH, and dissolved oxygen (DO) at three reef habitats (reef flat, lagoon, and outflow channel) in a fringing coral reef system in Okinawa, Japan for a duration of 3 weeks in October of 2019. During the study, circulation was primarily wave-driven with mean flow speeds ranging from 14-26 cm/s. Flow direction became increasingly consistent at higher flow speeds, which traced visual patterns in the benthos observed from satellite imagery. Multiple linear regression models of daytime changes in pH and DO versus daily mean flow speed and PAR described 25-74% of the observed variability across all sites while at night, flow speed alone accounted for 35-69% of the observed variability. The results demonstrate that flow speed, trajectory, and PAR play important and variable roles in controlling biogeochemical variability within coral reefs and need to be considered in assessing their vulnerability to global climate change.</p>

Relative importance of intensity and spectrum of artificial light at night in disrupting behavior of a nocturnal rodent
<p>The influence of light spectral properties on circadian rhythms is of substantial interest to laboratory-based investigation of the circadian system and to field-based understanding of the effects of artificial light at night. The tradeoffs between intensity and spectrum regarding masking behaviors are largely unknown, even for well-studied organisms. We used a custom LED illumination system to document the response of wild type house mice (Mus musculus) to 1-hr nocturnal exposure of all combinations of four intensity levels (0.01, 0.5, 5, and 50 lx) and three correlated color temperatures (CCT; 1750, 1950, and 3000 K). Higher intensities of light (50 lx) suppressed cage activity substantially, and consistently more for the higher CCT light (91% for 3000 K; 53% for 1750 K). At the lower intensities (0.01 lx), mean activity was increased, with the greatest increases for the lowest CCT (12.3% increase at 1750 K; 3% increase at 3000 K). Multiple linear regression confirmed the influence of both CCT (p&lt;0.001) and intensity (p&lt;0.001) on changes in activity (r2=0.66, F9,171=3.33; p<0.001) with the scaled effect size of intensity 3.6 times greater than CCT. Activity suppression was significantly lower for male than female mice (p&lt;0.0001). Assessment of light-evoked cFos expression in the suprachiasmatic nucleus at 50 lx showed no significant difference between high and low CCT exposure. The significant differences by spectral composition illustrate a need to account for light spectrum in circadian studies of behavior and confirm that spectral controls can mitigate some, but certainly not all, of the effects of light pollution on species in the wild.</p>

1. The growing interest in the effects of light pollution on daily and seasonal cycles of animals has led to a boost of research in recent years. In birds, it has been hypothesized that artificial light at night can affect daily aspects of behaviour, but one caveat is the lack of knowledge about the light intensity that wild animals, such as birds, are exposed to during the night. 2. Organisms have naturally evolved daily rhythms to adapt to the 24-h cycle of day and night, thus, it is important to investigate the potential shifts in daily cycles due to global anthropogenic processes such as urbanization. 3. We captured adult male European blackbirds (Turdus merula) in one rural forest and two urban sites differing in the degree of anthropogenic disturbance. We tagged these birds with light loggers and simultaneously recorded changes in activity status (active/non-active) through an automated telemetry system. We first analysed the relationship between light at night, weather conditions and date with daily activity onset and end. We then compared activity, light at night exposure and noise levels between weekdays and weekends. 4. Onset of daily activity was significantly advanced in both urban sites compared to the rural population, while end of daily activity did not vary either among sites. Birds exposed to higher amounts of light in the late night showed earlier onset of activity in the morning, but light at night did not influence end of daily activity. Light exposure at night and onset/end of daily activity timing was not different between weekdays and weekends, but all noise variables were. A strong seasonal effect was detected in both urban and rural populations, such as birds tended to be active earlier in the morning and later in the evening (relative to civil twilight) in the early breeding season than at later stages. 5. Our results point at artificial light at night as a major driver of change in timing of daily activity. Future research should focus on the costs and benefits of altered daily rhythmicity in birds thriving in urban areas.
Intensity and mode of Lindera melissifolia reproduction are affected by flooding and light availability
<p>A water impoundment facility was used to control the duration of soil flooding (0, 45, or 90 days) and shade houses were used to control light availability (high = 72 %, intermediate = 33 %, or low = 2 % of ambient light) received by L. melissifolia established on native soil of the MAV. A completely randomized, split-plot design was used to evaluate the effects of soil flooding and light availability on L. melissifolia reproductive intensity and mode. Analyses were conducted on plot means using PROC GLIMMIX with an adjustment in the error term for the whole-plot factor (SAS 9.4, SAS Institute, Inc., Cary, North Carolina, USA). PROC UNIVARIATE was used to test data normality for each response variable, and residual errors were normalized with Box-Cox, natural log, or square root transformations where appropriate prior to the PROC GLIMMIX analyses. Significance was accepted at ∝ = 0.05, and we used the least significant difference (LSD) test to separate significant treatment effect means. When a soil flooding and light availability interaction was significant, separation of soil flooding level means was conducted by light availability level, and separation of light availability level means was conducted by soil flooding level.</p>

Data from: Changing light conditions in pine rockland habitats affect the intensity and outcome of ant–plant interactions
Extrafloral nectar (EFN) mediates food-for-protection mutualisms between plants and ants. Such mutualisms exist within a complex web of biotic interactions, and in a framework provided by the abiotic environment. Both biotic and abiotic factors, therefore, affect the outcome of ant–plant interactions. We conducted an experiment to determine the effects of ant activity, and light intensity, on herbivory rates, growth, and reproductive fitness in Senna mexicana var. chapmanii, a perennial legume native to pine rockland habitats of south Florida. Forty plants were divided among four treatments in a factorial experimental design with two independent variables: ant activity and light intensity. Plants were divided equally between sunny and shady habitats, and ants were excluded from half of the plants in each habitat type. The presence of ants significantly reduced herbivory rates in S. chapmanii. In shaded habitats, the presence of ants had no effect on plant reproductive fitness, however, in sunny habitats plants with ants produced significantly more seeds over the duration of the 1-yr study. Ants represent an important biotic defense against herbivores in S. chapmanii; however, their effects on plant fitness are dependent on light conditions. Pine rockland habitats in south Florida have been widely destroyed or mismanaged. In fragments that remain, suppression of fire has led to increased canopy closure and shading of the understory. These changes will likely negatively impact plants that rely on ants for defense. We highlight the importance of conservation efforts to preserve the pine rocklands and the fire regimes on which they rely.
