The cell-associated magnesium content is affected in Salmonella mutants defective for SigmaS/RpoS and O-antigen synthesis

<p>In many Gram-negative bacteria, the stress sigma factor of RNA polymerase, σS/RpoS, remodels global gene expression to reshape the physiology of quiescent cells and ensure their survival under non-optimal growth conditions. In the foodborne pathogen <i>Salmonella enterica</i> serovar Typhimurium, σS is also required for biofilm formation and virulence. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p><p>Our recent work has shown that a Δ<i>rpoS</i> mutation reduces the magnesium content of <i>Salmonella</i> (Metaane et al. 2022, PLoS ONE 17(3): e0265511).&nbsp; The O-antigen of LPS is a Mg2+ reservoir that can be used under magnesium deprivation.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p><p>We show here that eventhough the cell-associated magnesium content is affected when <i>Salmonella</i> lacks the entire O-antigen, an effect of the Δ<i>rpoS</i> mutation can be still observed. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p><p>We have also shown that the amount of intracellular free Mg2+ is slightly reduced in the Δ<i>rpoS</i> mutant compared to the wild-type strain (Metaane et al 2023, PLoS ONE 18(9): e0291736). &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p><p><strong>This work was supported by the French National Research Agency (ANR-19-CE44-0005-01, PERIOMET project).</strong>&nbsp;</p>

The Role of Operating Conditions in the Precipitation of Magnesium Hydroxide Hexagonal Platelets Using NaOH Solutions

<p>Magnesium hydroxide, Mg(OH)<sub>2</sub>, is an inorganic compound extensively employed in several industrial sectors. Nowadays, it is mostly produced from magnesium-rich minerals. Nevertheless, magnesium-rich solutions, such as natural and industrial brines, could prove to be a great treasure. In this work, synthetic magnesium chloride and sodium hydroxide, NaOH, solutions were used to recover Mg(OH)<sub>2</sub> by reactive crystallization. A detailed experimental campaign was conducted aiming at producing grown Mg(OH)<sub>2</sub> hexagonal platelets. Experiments were carried out in a stirred tank crystallizer operated in single- and double-feed configurations. In the single-feed configuration, globular and nano-flakes primary particles were obtained, as always reported in the literature when NaOH is used as a precipitant. However, these products are not complying with flame retardant applications that require large hexagonal Mg(OH)<sub>2</sub> platelets. This work suggests an effective precipitation strategy to favour crystal growth while, at the same time, limiting nucleation mechanism. The double-feed configuration allowed the synthesis of grown Mg(OH)<sub>2</sub> hexagonal platelets. The influence of reactants flow rates, reactants concentrations and reaction temperature was analyzed. SEM pictures were also taken to investigate the morphology of Mg(OH)<sub>2</sub> crystals. The proposed precipitation strategy paves the road to satisfy flame retardant market requirements.</p>

Data from: Magnetoliposomes containing magnesium ferrite nanoparticles as nanocarriers for the model drug curcumin

Magnesium ferrite nanoparticles, with diameters around 25 nm, were synthesized by coprecipitation method. The magnetic properties indicate a superparamagnetic behavior, with a maximum magnetization of 16.2 emu/g, a coercive field of 22.1 Oe and a blocking temperature of 183.2 K. These MgFe2O4 nanoparticles were used to produce aqueous and solid magnetoliposomes, with sizes below 130 nm. The potential drug curcumin was successfully incorporated in these nanosystems, with high encapsulation efficiencies (above 89%). Interaction by fusion between both types of drug loaded magnetoliposomes (with or without PEGylation) and models of biological membranes was demonstrated, using FRET or fluorescence quenching assays. These results point to future applications of magnetoliposomes containing MgFe2O4 nanoparticles in cancer therapy, allowing combined magnetic hyperthermia and chemotherapy.

Data from: Production of low-carbon amorphous precipitated silica and hydrated magnesium carbonate from olivine

<p>A novel process is reported that produces amorphous silica and nesquehonite (MgCO<sub>3</sub>.3H<sub>2</sub>O) from the magnesium silicate mineral olivine ((Mg,Fe)<sub>2</sub>.SiO<sub>4</sub>). The amorphous silica formed is a supplementary cementitious material (SCM) for use in concrete. The formation of nesquehonite sequesters carbon and means that the overall process is carbon negative. Nesquehonite can also be used to form low-carbon construction products such as bricks, blocks, and boards. This paper reports on key process optimisation studies. The potential for amorphous precipitated silica derived from olivine to produce carbon-negative concrete is discussed.</p>

Comparative Study of Intravenous Esmolol & Magnesium Sulphate in Attenuating Hemodynamic Response during Laryngoscopy & Endotracheal Intubation in Patients Undergoing Valvular Heart Surgery: a Randomised Clinical Trial

<p>The present study aimed to compare the effectiveness of esmolol &amp; magnesium sulphate in attenuating the hemodynamic response<br> to endotracheal intubation and to note any signifi cant side effects caused by these drugs.<br> Background: Induction with endotracheal intubation in patients undergoing valvular heart replacement pose lot of hemodynamic<br> variations. Obtunding hemodynamic response which can be deleterious in such patients pose a challenge to the cardiac anaesthetist. We<br> hypothesized that using esmolol as compared to magnesium sulphate will attenuate the hemodynamic response during laryngoscopy &amp;<br> endotracheal intubation in patients undergoing valvular heart replacement.<br> Methods: This was a double blind, randomised, single centre, interventional, prospective study. In this study 96 patients were divided<br> into two groups with 48 patients each (n = 48) by sealed enveloped method of randomisation. Group E received esmolol 1.5 mg/ kg i.v<br> and Group M received magnesium sulphate 50 mg/ kg i.v each diluted in normal saline to make up a volume of 50 ml &amp; given via infusion<br> slowly over 5 minutes by a burette set. Hemodynamic parameters like Heart Rate (HR), Mean Arterial Pressure (MAP), Systolic Blood<br> Pressure (SBP), Diastolic Blood Pressure (DBP) at baseline, 5 minutes after premedication, just before intubation 3, 5, 10 &amp; 15 minutes<br> post intubation were recorded. The last observation at the end of 15 minutes post intubation was considered as the end of study.<br> Results: All the enrolled patients were analyzed. The esmolol group showed a decrease in the H.R from baseline (86.13 &plusmn; 15.87)<br> as compared to magnesium sulphate (98.51 &plusmn; 16.81 with a 95% CI, 4.62-4.69, p value &lt; 0.001) 5 minute after premedication. There was<br> statistically signifi cant difference in H.R between both groups 5 minutes after drug administration.<br> Conclusion: Administration of esmolol before intubation in valvular heart patients undergoing valve replacement surgery controls the<br> hemodynamic response much better as compared to magnesium sulphate.</p>

Scanning precession electron diffraction data of partly overlapping magnesium oxide nanoparticles

<p>Scanning precession electron diffraction (SPED) data of cubical magnesium oxide (MgO) nanoparticles are provided. The MgO particles in the data are partly overlapping and some share the same orientation. The dataset was used for demonstration of nanocrystal segmentation in SPED data, which is presented in the article entitled &quot;Nanocrystal segmentation in scanning precession electron diffraction data&quot; [1]. In this publication, two methods for nanocrystal segmentation are presented based on; i) virtual dark-field imaging and ii) non-negative matrix factorisation, both incorporating watershed image segmentation. Poultry litter (PL) is an abundant biochar feedstock. However, PL-derived biochars are typically high in soluble P and therefore require chemical modification to become effective P sorbents. This study investigated the effect of magnesium (Mg) activation on extractable P (EP) and P sorption capacities of PL-derived biochars. Biochar was produced at 500–900 °C from PL activated with 0–1 M Mg. Three differentially aged PL feedstocks were evaluated (1-, 3–5-, and 7–9-year-old). </p>

<p>Datasets are obtained from X-ray diffraction (XRD), Rietveld analysis, Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Electrochemicla impedance spectroscopy (EIS), Nudged Elastic Band (NEB), Chronopotentiometry (CP), Linear sweep voltammetry (LSV), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS).</p> <p><strong>Abstract:</strong> Secondary batteries using multivalent cations as ionic charge carriers have attracted increasing attention in recent years due to the high theoretical energy density provided by multi-electron redox reactions. However, the high charge density of these cations inevitably leads to sluggish kinetics of ion migration at room temperature, which poses a challenge for the development of solid-state batteries using multivalent ions. Here, we prepared a magnesium ion conducting hybrid solid electrolyte (HSE) consisting of a new NASICON-structured material, Mg0.5Sn2(PO4)3, and a small amount of Mg ionic liquid. The HSE shows superior room-temperature ionic conductivity of 1.11 &middot; 10&minus;4 S cm&minus;1 and an activation energy of 0.36 eV. Due to good compatibility of the HSE with the magnesium metal anode, symmetric MgǀHSE|Mg cells show stable Mg plating and stripping behavior at room temperature. Using in situ electrochemical scanning electron microscopy measurements the room temperature growth-induced fracture of the HSE was observed, giving unequivocal evidence for magnesium deposition. These results may serve as starting point for understanding the magnesium deposition mechanism on solid electrolyte in solid-state batteries.</p>
