High-frequency, hourly, and daily measurements from Friis Hills Meteorological Station (FRSM), McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica (2010-2024, ongoing)

As part of the McMurdo Dry Valleys Long-Term Ecological Research program, a spatially distributed, long-term climate monitoring network was established across the McMurdo Dry Valleys region of Antarctica, consisting of fourteen research-grade weather stations that continuously measure a standard suite of environmental parameters. Ecosystem processes in this region are strongly regulated by climatic drivers that exhibit high variability across both time and space, making accurate measurement of environmental variables at high temporal and spatial resolution essential to understanding the biophysical dynamics of this polar desert ecosystem. This data package includes measurements from the Friis Hills Meteorological Station (FRSM), which was established in 2010 on top of Friis Hills in Taylor Valley, McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica. Parameters include air temperature, relative humidity, barometric pressure, and wind speed and direction. Data are provided at high frequency (typically 15-minute intervals), along with hourly and daily summaries. Users should note that summary statistics may be affected by periods of missing data. Since there is no universally accepted standard for handling gaps in time-series data, users are encouraged to work with the high-frequency data and establish their own criteria for acceptable data completeness to minimize any potential bias.

Measurement differences between air temperature instruments used at H.J. Andrews meteorological stations

The PRIMET Horizontal Radiation Shield Comparison (PHRSC) experiment compares the difference between the air temperature measurements of a reference temperature sensor inside a fan aspirated radiation shield and temperature sensors located inside passively aspirated radiation shields including a cotton region shelter, Gill multi-plate shield, and a custom-fabricated model. Observed variables include air temperature, wind speed, and incoming and reflected solar radiation. Data was collected in the field between 2010 and 2017 at the Primary Meteorological Station (PRIMET) at H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest, located in Oregon’s Western Cascades (44.21, -122.26, elevation 430m).

This data set includes meteorological parameters collected near Toolik Field Station from 2012 to 2016 under National Science Foundation (NSF) Office of Polar Programs ARC 0908444 (to Laura Gough), ARC 0908602 (to Natalie Boelman), and ARC 0909133 (to John Wingfield). It also includes meteorological data collected by two additional entities that are available on public repositories. Toolik data reflect data collected by the Toolik Envronmental Data Center and Imnavait data reflect data collected by the Arctic Observatory Network (AON). These data have been modified such that that sensor downtimes have been gapfilled by pulling data from the next nearest station. These data are associated with publication DOI: 10.1111/jav.01712

Note that this land station has been called the "Toolik Main Climate Station", and the station on the lake is located where the main lake sampling site is located so it has also been called the Toolik Lake Main Climate Station. Average air temperature, wind speed and wind direction at multiple heights are measured and calculated based on 1-second scan rate of all sensors located at an automated meteorological station installed at Jornada LTER MNORT site (different than the M-NORT NPP site). Wind speed is measured at 135 cm, 230 cm, 345cm, 705cm, and 1515 cm, wind direction at 250cm and 850cm, and air temperature at 80cm and 1440cm. This climate station is operated by the Jornada LTER Program and this is an ongoing dataset. CAUTION: little to no QA/QC has been applied to this dataset and these data are therefore provisional.
