ClimHyrdoDB Archive: Meteorologic and hydrologic observations from LTER and USFS sites, 2001-2020 - orignal database format

This dataset is an archive of the ClimHydroDB database, which was actively used from early 2001 to mid 2020. The database contained contributions from 62 contributors (primarily from the LTER Network and US Forest Service) and 672 research sites. Data records total approximately 16 million (raw) or 1.6 million (aggregated) for 22 meteorologic or hydrologic variables. This archive contains the 23 core tables of the ClimHydroDB database as text tables of comma separated values, plus the database entity relationship diagram (ERD), User Guide, database table descriptions (DDL, SQL script), and a zip file of related documents and presentations. Database design: At last upgrade, the database was implemented in Microsoft SQL Server 2008 (see DDL for more information). Database tables are primarily in a key-value pair arrangement, with controlled input for many fields, and extensive cross referencing. This design allows many types of descriptors to be assigned, e.g., for the types of activities taking place at research stations, or for physical parameters to describe a research area itself. The EML metadata for tables holding controlled vocabularies are described using the string “List of …”. Cross reference tables are described in metadata as such, including the parent table names. Database history: To facilitate intersite research within the LTER network, site data managers developed a system to provide climatic summaries dynamically, called ClimDB. Later funding from the U. S. Forest Service allowed the original database to be expanded to include hydrologic variables, and the combined database was renamed ClimHydroDB in 2003. The database also harvested real-time streamflow data from USGS gauging stations, using code developed by the Georgia Coastal Ecosystem LTER. As of 2021, the ClimHydroDB content is available as data packages from individual contributing sites, each containing identically formatted text tables in the ODM 1.1 format, for integration with CUAHSI tools

Marcell Experimental Forest 30-minute resolution meteorological data, 2006 - ongoing

This data publication contains 30-minute meteorological data collected from 2006 - ongoing at the Marcell Experimental Forest (MEF) in Itasca County, Minnesota, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station. Air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and direction, photosynthetic photon flux density, soil temperature, and soil volumetric water content were measured at three meteorological monitoring stations. One station is in an upland clearing, one is under an upland forest canopy, and the third is in a peatland.

Long-term Meteorological Data from the GCE-LTER Eddy Covariance Flux Tower on Sapelo Island, Georgia

Long-term measurements of key meteorological variables were made using electronic sensors attached to the GCE-LTER eddy covariance flux tower deployed in a Spartina alterniflora salt marsh on Sapelo Island, Georgia. Variables measured include air temperature, relative humidity, precipitation, wind speed, wind direction, photosynthetically-available and total solar radiation. Measurements were logged at 5 minute intervals using a Campbell Scientific Instruments CR3000 data logger then re-scaled to 15 minute and daily interval data sets. Quality control analyses were performed to remove values deemed invalid due to sensor failure or miscalibration, and to assign Q/C qualifiers to values outside expected ranges or failing various sanity and quality checks of the data. Measurements began in 2013; however, the total solar pyranometer was not installed until 2018 and minimum and maximum 5 minute air temperature were not added until 2019 so not all variables span the complete period of record. Measurements are continuing at this site and this data set will be updated annually to include additional observations.

Long-term climate indices (SPEI and scPDSI) derived from monthly meteorology data collected at USHCN stations in the northern Chihuahuan Desert of the United States, 1911-2021

Drought indices — Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) and the self-calibrating Palmer Drought Severity Index (scPDSI) —where derived from 9 United States Historical Climate Network (USHCN) stations on the Chihuahuan Desert in North America for this dataset. USHCN is a subset of the NOAA Cooperative Observer Program (COOP) Network, which consists of selected sites based on spatial coverages and completeness of data. Monthly precipitation depths, minimum, maximum and mean temperature were pulled from the dataset. These drought indices were derived using the SPEI package and scPDSI packages in R. Potential evapotranspiration was also calculated in R using the Thornthwaite method. All 9 sites are within the bounds of the Chihuahuan Desert in the state of New Mexico, with a single site (EL PASO) in the state of Texas.

Standard meteorology and ancillary data from the Tromble Weir experimental watershed tower at the Jornada Basin LTER site, 2010-ongoing

This data package contains 30-minute standard meteorology and ancillary data collected at an eddy covariance tower in the Tromble Weir Watershed area of the Jornada Basin in southern New Mexico, USA. These data are used to quantify the water and energy balances in a small experimental watershed, including observational studies to calculate groundwater recharge as a water balance residual, to build relations between soil moisture state and ET flux, and to quantify land-atmosphere interactions and improve our understanding of the eddy covariance method. Additionally, they have been used in modeling studies as a validation of model performance. This file presents the ancillary data collected at the eddy covariance tower, excluding the 20Hz flux measurements that are archived at AmeriFlux (site US-Jo2; http://ameriflux.lbl.gov/sites/siteinfo/US-Jo2). This includes soil moisture and temperature at 4 depths, air temperature and pressure, humidity and vapor pressure, ground heat flux, incoming and outgoing longwave and shortwave radiation, photosynthetically active radiation for a subset of the study period, and surface soil temperature. Instrument descriptions and detailed procedures are found in the references listed in the Methods section of this package. This is an ongoing dataset that will be updated annually.
