ECCO Geometry Parameters for the 0.5 degree Lat-Lon Model Grid (Version 4 Release 4)

This dataset provides geometric parameters for the regular 0.5-degree lat-lon grid from the ECCO Version 4 Release 4 (V4r4) ocean and sea-ice state estimate. Parameters include areas and lengths of grid cell sides and the horizontal and vertical coordinates of grid cell centers and corners. Additional information related to the global domain geometry (e.g., bathymetry and land/ocean masks) are also included. However, users should note these domain geometry fields are approximations because they have been interpolated from the ECCO lat-lon-cap 90 (llc90) native model grid. Users interested in exact budget closure calculations for volume, heat, salt, or momentum should use ECCO fields provided on the llc90 grid. Estimating the Circulation and Climate of the Ocean (ECCO) state estimates are dynamically and kinematically-consistent reconstructions of the three-dimensional, time-evolving ocean, sea-ice, and surface atmospheric states. ECCO V4r4 is a free-running solution of a global, nominally 1-degree configuration of the MIT general circulation model (MITgcm) that has been fit to observations in a least-squares sense. Observational data constraints used in V4r4 include sea surface height (SSH) from satellite altimeters [ERS-1/2, TOPEX/Poseidon, GFO, ENVISAT, Jason-1,2,3, CryoSat-2, and SARAL/AltiKa]; sea surface temperature (SST) from satellite radiometers [AVHRR], sea surface salinity (SSS) from the Aquarius satellite radiometer/scatterometer, ocean bottom pressure (OBP) from the GRACE satellite gravimeter; sea ice concentration from satellite radiometers [SSM/I and SSMIS], and in-situ ocean temperature and salinity measured with conductivity-temperature-depth (CTD) sensors and expendable bathythermographs (XBTs) from several programs [e.g., WOCE, GO-SHIP, Argo, and others] and platforms [e.g., research vessels, gliders, moorings, ice-tethered profilers, and instrumented pinnipeds]. V4r4 covers the period 1992-01-01T12:00:00 to 2018-01-01T00:00:00.

Data from: A prediction model of compressor with variable geometry diffuser based on elliptic equation and Partial Least Squares

In order to fulfill more and more extensive intake air flow range of diesel engine, variable geometry compressor (VGC) is introduced into turbocharged diesel engine. However, due to the variable diffuser vanes angle (DVA), the prediction for the performance of VGC becomes more difficult than normal compressor. In the present study, a prediction model comprised of elliptical equation and PLS (Partial Least Squares) model was proposed to predict the performance of VGC. The speed lines of pressure ratio map and efficiency map with elliptical equation were fitted, and the coefficients of elliptical equation was introduced into PLS model to build the polynomial relationship between the coefficients and relative speed, DVA. And further, the maximal order of polynomical was detailed investigated to reduce the number of sub-coefficients and acceptable fit accuracy simultaneously. The prediction model was validated with sample data and in order to present the superiority in compressor performance prediction, the prediction results of this model were compared with those of look-up table and BPNN. The validation and comparison results show that the prediction accuracy of the new developed model is acceptable, and this model is much more suitable than look-up table and BPNN under the same condition in the VGA performance prediction. Moreover, the new developed prediction model provides a novel and effective prediction solution for VGC and can be used to improve the accuracy of the thermodynamic model for turbocharged diesel engines in the future.

These datasets show different rock units in the Latemar platform riddled with diverse structural elements, including fractures (veins, joints, faults) and stylolites. In addition, the datasets are part of the paper titled "Geometries, Driving Factors, And Connectivity Of Background Fractures At The Latemar Carbonate Platform (N. Italy): Relevance For Subsurface Reservoir Modelling", submitted for publication in the Tectonics Journal.

The drone images are taken with DJI Phantom 4® and processed using Agisoft PhotoScan® - a photogrammetry tool. The workflow in processing the drone images is publicly available in the published work of Bisdom et al. (2017).

Evolving geometries, topologies, and apertures in fracture networks: Quantitative insights from lattice modeling

Fracture networks are crucial in controlling rock mass permeability. Some of the important features of the fracture networks like the density, interconnectivity, spatial distribution, and fracture apertures determine the success of the subsurface operations. Fracture networks can be studied with analogue studies, physical experiments, and numerical modeling. In this study, we analyse the evolution of a two-dimensional fracture network under gravitational and shear loads using the lattice modeling capabilities of the microstructural modeling environment “Elle”. The simulation cases include varying gravitational loads and Young’s moduli of the formations. The topological progression of the modeled fracture network from isolated to interconnected nodes depicts a realistic network evolution process. The study shows that the rock stiffness exhibits a direct correlation with the number of fractures influencing the average aperture size of the network. A higher gravity load resulted in the development of a sparse fracture network. Stiffer rock models also showed an early onset of fracturing.
