CLM/CTSM glacier input datasets used for study on evaluation variable-resolution CESM2 in High-Mountain Asia

<p><strong>General Info</strong></p> <p>This data archive contains the updated&nbsp;glacier-cover&nbsp;and glacier regions&nbsp;for the Community Land Model version 5 (CLM5)/Community Terrestrial Systems Model (CTSM). The updated glacier-cover and glacier regions are&nbsp;used for a study on the evaluation of variable-resolution (VR)&nbsp;CESM2 in High Mountain Asia (<a href="https://tc.copernicus.org/preprints/tc-2022-256/">https://tc.copernicus.org/preprints/tc-2022-256/</a>). The data archive also&nbsp;contains the model scripts and input files that have been used to&nbsp;create the glacier-cover dataset. Loma Mountains National Park Forest Aboveground Biomass Plots

<p>This dataset is part of my MSc Thesis:&nbsp;<em>Carbon loss hotspots in Loma Mountains National Park:&nbsp;Spatio-temporal carbon loss due to deforestation in Sierra Leone</em></p> <p>Based on a random sampling&nbsp;at the edges of the park, 14 transects, consisting of 3-4 plots were measured. Within each plot, tree height and diameter at breast height was measured, which could then be used to calculate the aboveground biomass. The diameter and length of dead wood pieces was also measured. An attempt was made to identify tree species present in the plots, by matching the local names provided by our field guides to a database of Sierra Leone&#39;s trees, which includes vernacular names.&nbsp;</p> <p>A full description of the methods and context of this data can be found in my MSc Thesis.</p>

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal response to fire and urbanization in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Wildfires are increasing in frequency and intensity as drier and warmer climates increase plant detrital fuel loads. At the same time, increases in urbanization position 9% of fire-prone land within the US at the wildland-urban interface. While rarely studied, the compounded effects of urbanization and wildfires may have unknown synergistically negative effects on ecosystems. Previous studies at the wildland-urban interface often focus on aboveground plant communities, but belowground ecosystems may also be affected by this double disturbance. In particular, it is unclear how much fire and urbanization independently or interactively affect nutritional symbioses such as those between arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi and the majority of terrestrial plants. In November 2016, extreme drought conditions and long-term fire suppression combined to create a wildfire within the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP) and the neighboring exurban city of Gatlinburg, TN. To understand how the double disturbance of urbanization and fire affected AM fungal communities, we collected fine roots from the five dominant understory species in September 2018 at each of 18 sites spanning three burn severities in both exurban and natural sites. Despite large variation in burn severity, plant species identity had the largest influence on AM fungi. AM fungal colonization, richness, and composition all varied most among plant species. Fire and urbanization did influence some AM fungal metrics; colonization was lower in burned sites and composition was more variable among exurban locations. There were no interactions among burn severity and urbanization on AM fungi. Our results point to the large influence of plant species identity structuring this obligate nutritional symbiosis regardless of disturbance regime. Long-term (1962-2019) tree demography on permanent plots in old-growth northern hardwood forests of the Huron Mountains, Marquette Co., Michigan.

This package contains tree demographic data from multiple remeasurements of several sets of permanent study plots in old-growth hemlock-northern hardwood forests in northern Marquette Co., Michigan. Plots were established from 1962-2001, with five to nine censuses over the study period. Plots are distributed over a large and diverse area of old-growth forests protected since ca. 1880, with no commercial management and active management limited to maintenance of trails and tracks. Most plots have not experienced stand-originating disturbances for at least 400 years (based on increment cores); three plots are in stands originating following a fire ca. 1830 ("Bourdo plots" 7094-7096). Forests are dominated by sugar maple (Acer saccharum) and eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis); secondary species include yellow birch (Betula alleghaniensis), basswood (Tilia americana), and hop-hornbeam (Ostrya virginiana). Soils are variable, ranging from deep sandy outwash to thin layers of rocky till over bedrock. Mortality and diameter growth of all trees were recorded at each remeasurement. Protocols for measurement and stem-mapping are described in Methods. Several publications use some of the data included in this package -- see 'journal citations'. (identified as Kalkaska series) are developed on deep sandy glacial outwash. The plot is within a much larger region of old-growth forest, protected since ca. 1880, with only minimal disturbance associated with access tracks and trails. Numerous other forest community and dendrochronological studies support the interpretation that the area around the study plot has not experienced stand-initiating disturbance for at least 400 years. Initial mapping and measurements (1993-1995 for 2.52 ha; an additional 0.2 ha added in 1999) used a 20x20 m grid established in a near-level area of uniform substrate. Density-dependent effects of exotic brook trout on aquatic communities in mountain lakes revealed by environmental DNA and morphological taxonomy

Invasion of non-native fishes threatens freshwater biodiversity worldwide. Yet, detailed estimates of population demography for invasive species, that estimate population size and body size of the invasive species, are rarely integrated in evaluating aquatic community responses. Our study capitalized on detailed brook trout population demographic data collected for a replicated whole lake ecosystem experiment involving experimental harvesting of exotic brook trout in nine mountain lakes. We applied environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding and morphological taxonomy to examine the response of crustacean zooplankton and macroinvertebrate communities to gradients in brook trout effective density and lake elevation. Density-dependent effects of brook trout on crustacean zooplankton and macroinvertebrate communities were detected even decades after their first introductions (between 1926 and 1980). However, they were moderated by environmental factors such as elevation, lake maximum depth and dissolved organic carbon. Elevation was important in structuring crustacean zooplankton and macroinvertebrate community composition. While there were differences in explanatory variables when describing communities characterized by eDNA metabarcoding and morphological taxonomy, the principal environmental factors that structured the communities were similar. Our paper highlights persisting density-dependent impacts of exotic trout on invertebrate communities even decades after first introduction, and it considers the conservation implications for lake restoration.

Sonde Data (2010-2014) from the Salmon Trout River in the Huron Mountains, Marquette Co., Michigan.

This dataset includes readings from a multi-parameter water quality sonde to continuously monitor chemical and biological conditions (water temperature, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, pH, turbidity) on the Salmon Trout River in Marquette, MI. This sensor was deployed May-Nov 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014. This dataset includes cleaned raw data obtained with the sonde and may include time periods when readings were affected by sand accumulation/burial of the sensors.

Long-Term Studies of Huron Mountain Club Small Mammal Populations

These datasets include small mammal population data collected by Richard Manville (1940-1942), Phillip Myers (2003), and Allison Poor (2004-2005). Small mammal traps were initially placed in 8 locations throughout the Huron Mountains in Michigan's Upper Peninsula from 1940-1942 by Richard Manville. Small mammals present in the traps were recorded once each year and twice in 1941. This study was repeated by Phillip Myers and Allison Poor from 2003-2005.

Sites were selected to sample topographic variation in surface and air temperatures within a narrow range of elevations on northeast to southwest-facing slopes, ridges and valleys. To characterize surface temperature variation within a site, 21 sensors were arranged in an identical pattern around and in six, 5x5 m experimental gardens. An additional 18 sensors were placed along three transects over the landscape running N-S. They were placed strategically to sample topographic inflection points (hill tops and valley bottoms) as well as north and south facing slopes. Permanent plot data for old-growth white pine - hemlock - hardwood forests in the Huron Mountains, Marquette County, Michigan: 2006-2022

This study was initiated by Dr. Dennis A. Riege with a focus on the role of white pine (Pinus strobus) in old-growth mixed white pine-hemlock-northern hardwood forests. Study areas within the lands of the Huron Mt. Club were selected for prominent presence of canopy white pine. Several permanent study plots, totaling about 3.3 ha, were established, with all trees >5 cm diameter at breast height (dbh) identified, mapped and measured. Initiatl establishment was from 2006-2008. All plots were remeasured in 2011, 2016 and 2021-22. Mortality and new recruits were documented in remeasurements. Reference coordinates for each plot are included in 'Methods'. Data tables in this package include all of these measurements. Additional information, including maps of downed logs, is included in material included under 'other entities'.

Hourly time series of Ives Lake (Huron Mountains, Marquette County, MI) Water Temperature-Depth Profiles, 2013-2022 (continuing study)

Long-term measurements of lake temperatures are essential to providing insights into local and regional changes in climate since large, still water bodies effectively act as a high-frequency filter. Ives Lake is a 30.7 m deep water body in northern Marquette County, in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Beginning in 2013, temperature readings have been collected hourly from a string of twelve sensors located near the deepest point of the lake (approximately 46.84874 N lat, 87.84895 W long; identified by sonar survey in 2010 by first author). Measurements are continuing. The purpose of the project is to collect a data record of sufficient duration to determine if water temperatures are warming, and if the dates of autumn lake turnover are shifting toward later in the year.

High frequency limnological sensor data from three lakes in the Pocono Mountains region, Pennsylvania USA, 2016-2024

This dataset publication provides access to eight years of high-frequency sensor data from three lakes: Giles, Lacawac, and Waynewood. These lakes are located in the Pocono Mountains region of Pennsylvania, USA and have been the site of long-term monitoring and research. Lake Giles is a relatively clear-water low dissolved organic matter oligotrophic lake in a largely protected watershed. Lake Lacawac has higher dissolved organic matter concentrations and is considered a dystrophic brown-water system; it is also in a highly-protected watershed. Lake Waynewood is a relatively productive eutrophic lake with a larger watershed that is mixed agricultural, forested, and residential use. High-frequency sensors were deployed on sensor lines at the deepest point in each lake. Measurements included temperature and dissolved oxygen through the water column, fluorescent dissolved organic matter at the surface and bottom, and chlorophyll fluorescence at the surface of each lake. These data are collected at a frequency of 10 to 30 minutes and are available in the data packages GilesHighFrequencyData.csv, LacawacHighFrequencyData.csv, and WaynewoodHighFrequencyData.csv. Data from weather stations located adjacent to each lake can be found in the data package PoconosWeatherStationData.csv. Additional long-term limnological data (four decades) for Lakes Giles, Lacawac, and Waynewood are available in the data package edi.186.8.

Environmental, community and trait data of small water bodies in Zijin Mountain, Nanjing, Jiangsu, China, 2022

Small water bodies (SWBs) are vulnerable to drought and play a vital role in the conservation of aquatic biodiversity. Currently climate change is intensifying the seasonal drought of SWBs in monsoonal east Asia. However, little is known about the response of benthic macroinvertebrates of small ponds and streams that simultaneously suffer from climate-induced extreme drought. This study aimed to explore the taxonomic and functional response of macroinvertebrates in ponds and streams, either respectively or jointly, to extreme summer drought. We calculated taxonomic and functional diversity indices of communities in 11 streams and 12 ponds across three seasons: spring, summer and winter in 2022. We performed a permutational multivariate analysis of variance, Moran’s eigenvector maps, Moran Spectral Randomization based variation partitioning and convex hull analysis of trait space to examine temporal compositional and functional, as well as trait changes, and the contributions of environmental and spatial factors in shaping communities. The responses of taxonomic and functional diversity in ponds and streams were contrasting during the summer drought. Ponds showed increased taxonomic richness (TR), functional richness (FRic), functional richness (FRed) and trait space volume, while streams experienced decreased TR, FRic and trait space volume but increased FRed. The taxonomic and functional increases of ponds were driven by an influx of generalist taxa from streams, while the increase of FRed in streams resulted from the loss of species with strong dispersal and lentic adaptation traits. Dispersal played a more significant role than environmental filtering in shaping community structure during the drought, especially for streams lacking hydrological connectivity. This study provides the first insights into the complex response of macroinvertebrates to summer drought of SWBs in east Asia monsoonal region. Three decades of limnological data from lakes in the Pocono Mountains region, Pennsylvania USA, 1988-2023

Three decades of limnological data have been collected from Lakes Lacawac, Giles, and Waynewood, located in the Pocono Mountains region of Pennsylvania, USA as a part of this ongoing data set. Giles is a clear-water, low dissolved organic matter oligotrophic lake in a largely protected watershed, Lacawac has higher dissolved organic matter concentrations and is a dystrophic brown-water system in a highly protected watershed within the Lacawac Sanctuary and Biological Field Station, and Waynewood is a more productive, eutrophic lake, with a larger watershed that is mixed agricultural, forested, and residential use. One unique aspect of these data is that they comprise one of the largest and most complete data sets with measurements of underwater UV transparency available in the world. The data include a suite of 48 variables including biological (zooplankton), physical, optical, and chemical characteristics of the lakes, with a focus on the optical characteristics. Data were collected on many of these variables at least once annually during the summer, often with much more frequent samples during the ice-free season, and for several years in the early 1990s through the winter months. The following four files contain this data set, with the main data contained in PoconosLakeData.csv and PoconosZoopData.csv. SiteInformation.csv and Methods.csv support the main data files, with descriptions of the sampling sites and methods by which samples were processed, respectively. Also included are summary reports that provide an overview and characterize the three core PCLP (Pocono Comparative Lakes Program) lakes from 1989-1993. The user is referred in particular to the 1995 summary report on all three lakes as a useful introduction to the three lakes.
