Data from: Multidecadal changes in functional diversity lag behind the recovery of taxonomic diversity

1. While there has been increasing interest in how taxonomic diversity is changing over time, less is known about how long-term taxonomic changes may affect ecosystem functioning and resilience. Exploring long-term patterns of functional diversity can provide key insights into the capacity of a community to carry out ecological processes and the redundancy of species' roles.

2. We focus on a protected freshwater system located in a national park in southeast Germany. We use a high-resolution benthic macroinvertebrate dataset spanning 32 years (1983 – 2014) and test if changes in functional diversity are reflected in taxonomic diversity using a multidimensional trait-based approach and regression analyses. Specifically, we asked: i) How has functional diversity changed over time? ii) How functionally distinct are the community's taxa? iii) Are changes in functional diversity concurrent with taxonomic diversity? iv) What is the extent of community functional redundancy?

3. Resultant from acidification mitigation, macroinvertebrate taxonomic diversity increased over the study period. Recovery of functional diversity was less pronounced, lagging behind responses of taxonomic diversity. Over multi-decadal timescales, the macroinvertebrate community has become more homogenous with a high degree of functional redundancy, despite being isolated from direct anthropogenic activity.

4. While taxonomic diversity increased over time, functional diversity has yet to catch up. These results demonstrate that anthropogenic pressures can remain a threat to biotic communities even in protected areas. The differences in taxonomic and functional recovery processes highlight the need to incorporate functional traits in assessments of biodiversity responses to global change.

Volcanic impacts dominate bidecadal-multidecadal temperature variations during the late Holocene in Northern Fennoscandia

The repository contains one Excel table including two data sets. The first one gives the predictable (smooth) and non-predictable (varying) component of average summer temperatures for years 20-2000 AD. The sum of the components equals the temperature reconstruction of Esper et al. (2012) for Northern Scandinavia. The second set gives the leading years of the first significant deviations (FCD), totally 79 of them.

Data for the paper "Tropical Eastern Pacific-forced Atlantic Multidecadal Variability"

Data for the paper "Tropical Eastern Pacific-forced Atlantic Multidecadal Variability". The data are processed data, not the raw data from their own website. The raw data were downloaded from http://www.earthsystemgrid.org (CESM1) and https://psl.noaa.gov/data/gridded/data.noaa.ersst.v3.html (ERSSTv3b). The data were processed by Matlab R2018b. File format is '.mat' of Matlab. The details can be referred to "Read me.docx".

Dataset to reproduce the figures and table in "An Outsized Role for the Labrador Sea in the Multidecadal Variability of the Atlantic Overturning Circulation" in Science Advances
Climate models are essential tools for investigating intrinsic North Atlantic variability related to variations in the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC), but recent observations have called into question the fidelity of models that emphasize the importance of Labrador Sea processes. A multi-century pre-industrial climate simulation that resolves ocean mesoscale eddies has a realistic representation of key observed subpolar Atlantic phenomena, including the dominance of density-space overturning in the eastern subpolar gyre, and thus provides uniquely credible context for interpreting short observational records. Despite weak mean surface diapycnal transformation in the Labrador Sea, multidecadal AMOC variability can be traced to anomalous production of dense Labrador Sea Water with local buoyancy forcing in the interior Labrador Sea playing a significant driving role. The files included here are the post-processed model output fields and associated codes needed to reproduce the figures and table in Yeager et al., 2021, An Outsized Role for the Labrador Sea in the Multidecadal Variability of the Atlantic Overturning Circulation, doi:10.31223/X5ZP68.
