Data from: Accounting for observation processes across multiple levels of uncertainty improves inference of species distributions and guides adaptive sampling of environmental DNA
Understanding factors that influence observation processes is critical for accurate assessment of underlying ecological processes. When indirect methods of detection, such as environmental DNA, are used to determine species presence, additional levels of uncertainty from observation processes need to be accounted for. We conducted a field trial to evaluate observation processes of a terrestrial invasive species (wild pigs- Sus scrofa) from DNA in water bodies. We used a multi-scale occupancy analysis to estimate different levels of observation processes (detection, p): the probability DNA is available per sample (θ), the probability of capturing DNA per extraction (γ), and the probability of amplification per qPCR run (δ). We selected four sites for each of three water body types and collected 10 samples per water body during two months (September and October 2016) in central Texas. Our methodology can be used to guide sampling adaptively to minimize costs while improving inference of species distributions. Using a removal sampling approach was more efficient than pooling samples, and was unbiased. Availability of DNA varied by month, was considerably higher when water pH was near neutral, and was higher in ephemeral streams relative to wildlife guzzlers and ponds. To achieve a cumulative detection probability greater than 90% (including availability, capture, and amplification), future studies should collect 20 water samples per site, conduct at least 2 extractions per sample, and conduct 5 qPCR replicates per extraction. Accounting for multiple levels of uncertainty of observation processes improved estimation of the ecological processes and provided guidance for future sampling designs.
Data Processing for a Small-Scale Long-Term Coastal Ocean Observing System Near Mobile Bay, Alabama: A Geoscience Papers of the Future (GPF) Data Set
<p>The Dauphin Island Sea Lab (DISL) has been operating a permanent moored oceanographic station at 30 05.410'N, 88 12.694'W, 25 km southwest of the entrance to Mobile Bay, Alabama, since 2004. It collects hydrographic and current velocity data.</p> <p>This set of data files was collected between 27 Jan and 18 May 2011. It includes the raw data at initial download from the instruments, several intermediate processing steps, and final processed files ready for initial scientific analysis.</p> <p>The files have been prepared as supplementary material for a Geoscience Paper of the Future (GPF) in prep for publication at Earth and Space Science, as part of the OntoSoft GPF Initiative.</p> <p> </p>

Observation of an abnormal upward discharge process in a negative cloud-to-ground flash
<p>In a manuscript entitled “Observation of an abnormal upward discharge process in a negative cloud-to-ground flash”, the lightning data obtained by the Photron SAZ high-speed video and electric field change meters were analyzed. The data of our results are including in the Data_for_Fig_0x.figs. These files can be opened by MATLAB. The data supports the aforementioned manuscript and can be used freely for scientific purposes with appropriate citation.</p>

<p>WRF simulation output and processed files used to generate the figures and calculations in the manuscript "Observational and modelling analysis of Canada's only F5/EF5 tornado". Two zipped folders are attached, one is from the original control simulation with the microphysics scheme on (MP), and the other is from the experimental simulation with the microphysics scheme turned off (NOMP).</p><p>Each simulation zipped folder includes sub-directories containing the processed observed and simulated surface station data, surface wet-bulb potential temperature, cross sections (the MP simulation only), and convective parameter fields at 2100 UTC 22 June 2007.</p><p>A supplemental material in the form of a movie showing the radar observation between 2000 UTC 22 June 2007 and 0000 UTC 23 June 2007 is also attached. See the manuscript's Figure 5 caption for more information on the data shown in the animation.</p>
