Anticipating fluctuations of bigeye tuna in the Pacific Ocean from three-dimensional ocean biogeochemistry

<p>1. Subseasonal to decadal ocean forecasting can make significant contributions to achieving effective management of living marine resources in a changing ocean. Most applications rely on indirect proxies, however, often measured at the ocean surface and lacking a direct mechanistic link to the dynamics of marine populations.</p> <p>2. Here we take advantage of three-dimensional, dynamical reconstructions and forecasts of ocean biogeochemistry based on a global Earth System Model to hindcast and assess the capacity to anticipate fluctuations in the dynamics of bigeye tuna (<em>Thunnus obesus</em> Lowe) in the Pacific Ocean during the last six decades. We reconstructed spatial patterns in catch per unit effort (CPUE) through the combination of physiological indices capturing both habitat preferences and physiological tolerance limits in bigeye tuna.</p> <p>3. Our analyses revealed a sequence of four distinct regimes characterized by changes in the zonal distribution and average CPUE of bigeye tuna in the Pacific Ocean. Habitat models accounting for basin-wide fluctuations in the thermal structure and oxygen concentration throughout the water column captured interannual fluctuations in CPUE and regime switches that models based solely on surface information were unable to reproduce. Decade-long forecast experiments further suggested that forecasts of three-dimensional biogeochemical information might enable anticipation of fluctuations in bigeye tuna several years ahead.</p> <p>4. <em>Synthesis and applications.</em> Together, our results reveal the impact of variability of biogeochemical conditions in the ocean interior on the dynamics of bigeye tuna in the Pacific Ocean, raising concerns about the future impact of ocean warming and deoxygenation. The results also lend support to incorporating subsurface biogeochemical information into ecological forecasts to implement efficient dynamic management strategies and promote the sustainable use of marine living resources.</p>

Implementing Riverine Biogeochemical Inputs in ECCO-Darwin: A Sensitivity Analysis of Terrestrial Fluxes in a Data-Assimilative Global Ocean Biogeochemistry Model

<p>Resolving riverine biogeochemical inputs in ocean biogeochemistry models is pivotal for capturing the spatiotemporal variability of nutrients and carbon in coastal regions and in the global ocean. ECCO-Darwin is a pioneering data-assimilative&nbsp;global-ocean biogeochemistry model, which, to date, has focused on the pelagic zone. In this work, we use an optimized version&nbsp;of ECCO-Darwin to perform a sensitivity analysis to quantify the response of the open ocean and coastal margins to lateral inputs of carbon and nutrients. We generate riverine inputs by combining point-source freshwater discharge from JRA55-do with&nbsp;the Global NEWS 2 watershed model, accounting for lateral inputs from 5171 watersheds worldwide. While adding carbon&nbsp;and nutrients along with freshwater improves biogeochemical skill in river plume regions and coastal waters, the open-ocean&nbsp;response may be overestimated due to an excess of carbon and nutrients advected offshore. This highlights the need for a more&nbsp;nuanced representation of land-to-ocean and nearshore processes for quantifying how global ocean primary production and&nbsp;carbon cycling respond to land-to-ocean inputs.</p>

Ocean Biogeochemistry in the California Current System 2007-2010 L4 Monthly

A coupled physical-biogeochemical ocean model (the MITgcm with BLING biogeochemistry) is a least squares fit to all available ocean observations in the region of the California Current System. This is accomplished iteratively through the adjoint method, using the methodology developed by the Consortium for Estimating the Circulation and Climate of the Ocean (ECCO). The result is a physically realistic estimate of the ocean state. The model domain extends from 28N to 40N and from 130W to 114W. It has a 1/16-degree horizontal resolution (~7km) and 72 vertical levels.The NASA Carbon Monitoring System (CMS) is designed to make significant contributions in characterizing, quantifying, understanding, and predicting the evolution of global carbon sources and sinks through improved monitoring of carbon stocks and fluxes. The System will use the full range of NASA satellite observations and modeling/analysis capabilities to establish the accuracy, quantitative uncertainties, and utility of products for supporting national and international policy, regulatory, and management activities. CMS will maintain a global emphasis while providing finer scale regional information, utilizing space-based and surface-based data and will rapidly initiate generation and distribution of products both for user evaluation and to inform near-term policy development and planning.

Ocean Biogeochemistry from Gliders as part of the Gulf of Maine North Atlantic Time Series

This dataset contains ocean biogeochemistry data from two Slocum gliders along the Gulf of Maine North Atlantic Time Series (GNATS) transect. The transect runs approximately east-west, with only a very minor change in latitude. The gliders are deployed on the western end of the transect, travel along the transect line to the eastern end, turn around and travel back along the transect to the western end, before being recovered. Each file contains data from one deployment (a glider “mission”), and thus contains both an eastbound and a westbound measurement of each variable. A full mission takes approximately 20 – 30 days. The data are gridded by longitude (0.01° intervals) and depth (1 m intervals). For more details on dataset preparation, see the Original Publication Citation and Data Processing Workflow below.

Global Ocean Biogeochemistry Array

The Global Ocean Biogeochemistry (GO-BGC) Array is a project funded by the US National Science Foundation (NSF Award 1946578 ) to build a global network of chemical and biological sensors that will monitor ocean health. This grant is being used to build and deploy 500 robotic ocean-monitoring floats around the globe as part of NSF’s Mid-scale Research Infrastructure-2 program. This network of floats is collecting data on the chemistry and the biology of the ocean from the surface to a depth of 2,000 meters, augmenting the existing Argo array that monitors ocean temperature and salinity. The GO-BGC Array is led by Director Ken Johnson and administered by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute.
