Using environmental DNA to inform decommissioning decisions for offshore oil and gas infrastructure
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Artificial reefs are being utilised globally to aid in natural resource management, conservation, habitat restoration or the creation of unique marine habitats. There is much discussion around the optimal construction materials and designs for artificial reefs, the influences these have on biological communities, and the resulting ecological and social benefits. This discussion also includes the ecological value of repurposed marine infrastructure, such as decommissioned oil and gas platforms. Platforms often have an operational life spanning multiple decades, over which time they can develop extensive and unique community assemblages. The creation of artificial reefs by repurposing oil and gas platforms can have ecological, economic and sociological merit. However, with more than 12,000 platforms requiring decommissioning globally, there is the need for holistic assessment of biological communities associated with these platforms to inform the potential outcomes of different decommissioning options. We use environmental DNA metabarcoding (eDNA) of water, bio-foul and sediment samples to census broad eukaryotic diversity at eight platforms in the Gulf of Thailand (GoT) and five nearby soft sediment habitat locations. From the three depths targeted, we detected 430 taxa at platforms, with higher diversity in shallow (near-surface) samples (313 taxa), compared to mid (30 m collection depth; 261 taxa) and deep (50 m; 273 taxa). Only three percent of taxa were shared among all depths at platforms. Indicator taxa driving differences at platform depths were of the phyla Chordata, Arthropoda and Echinodermata for shallow samples and Cnidaria, Chlorophyta and Porifera for deep. No known introduced species were detected in platform samples. The frameworks supporting eDNA methodologies, such as taxonomy, assay availability and local reference material, particularly in diverse tropical habitats, require improvement for robust taxonomic analysis. This study highlights the versatility and scalability of eDNA metabarcoding in being able to holistically census marine infrastructure and inform the management and potential conservation of extant platform communities.</p>

Santa Barbara Channel fish and invertebrate surveys at oil and gas platforms
Dataset contains occurrences of fish and invertebrates at nine oil and gas platforms between 1995 and 2011 in the southern California (Pt. Arguello to Long Beach). Observations were collected using a manned submersible at depths ranging from 29 – 224 meters (95 - 739 feet). Data are organized into two tables: (1) the fish count (1995-2000) and (2) the invertebrate count (1997-2011). Fish surveys were conducted primarily at nine Platforms (Irene, Hidalgo, Harvest, Hermosa, Holly, Gilda, Grace, Gina, Gail) in the Santa Barbara Channel and Santa Maria Basin. Invertebrate surveys were collected at these nine platforms plus Platform Edith, located off Long Beach (1998) and partial submersible surveys were completed around Platforms C, B, A, Hillhouse, Henry, Houchin, Hogan, and Habitat (2000). See additional methods under “Methods” and citations therein. The Santa Barbara Channel and Santa Maria Basin are situated in a dynamic marine transition zone between the regional flow patterns of central and southern California. The Santa Barbara Channel is about 100 km long by about 50 km wide (60 x 20 miles) and is bordered on the south by the Northern Channel Islands (San Miguel, Santa Rosa, Santa Cruz, and Anacapa). The smaller Santa Maria Basin is located off Pt. Arguello to the northwest. The entire area is bathed in a complex hydrographic system of currents and water masses. The convergence of different water masses in the Santa Barbara Channel results in relatively large scale fluctuations in physical parameters (e.g., temperature, salinity, oxygen, and nutrient concentrations) and biotic assemblages (e. g., flora and fauna).
Santa Barbara Channel fish surveys at shallow regions of oil and gas platforms (SCUBA)
This dataset included fish counts that were surveyed in the shallow sections (0 – 40 meters) of the oil and gas platforms using Scuba. The oil and gas platforms are located in the Santa Barbara Channel, California, USA. Each of the eleven platforms (GILDA, GINA, HOLLY, IRENE, HERMOSA, HIDALGO, GAIL, GRACE, HARVEST, C, and HENRY) were surveyed multiple times a year from 1995 to 2000. This scuba project was conducted and reported under a cooperative agreement (Agreement 1445-CA09-95-0836) between the U. S. The best of both worlds: highlighting the synergies of combining knowledge modelling and automated techniques to improve information search and discovery in oil and gas exploration
<p><span>Research suggests organizations across all sectors waste a significant amount of time looking for information and often fail to leverage the information they have. In response, many organizations have deployed some form of enterprise search to improve the ‘findability’ of information. Debates persist as to whether thesauri and manual indexing or automated machine learning techniques should be used to enhance discovery of information. In addition, the extent to which a Knowledge Organization System (KOS) enhances discoveries or indeed blinds us to new ones remains a moot point. The oil and gas industry is used as a case study using a representative organization. Drawing on prior research, a theoretical model is presented which aims to overcome the shortcomings of each approach. This synergistic model could help to re-conceptualize the ‘manual’ versus ‘automatic’ debate in many enterprises, accommodating a broader range of information needs. This may enable enterprises to develop more effective information and knowledge management strategies and ease the tension between what are often perceived as mutually exclusive competing approaches. Certain aspects of the theoretical model may be transferable to other industries, which is an area for further research.</span></p>

Bioconcentration and lethal effects of gas-condensate and crude oil on nearshore copepod assemblages
<p> To assess the toxicity of petroleum pollutants on copepod assemblages, we conducted microcosm experiments simulating slick scenarios at five different concentrations (0, 50, 250, 500, 100 ppm) of gas-condensate and crude oil. We collected natural zooplankton from a coastal station (32°51'07.1 N 34°59'26.2 E) on July 18, 2021 (“gas-condensate experiment”) and July 27, 2021 (“crude oil experiment”) by two horizontal Bongo net tows (200 and 65 µm mesh size; 300 µm mesh size), and surface seawater (sieved through a 50 µm mesh). The seawater was enriched with the collected zooplankton (65 µm - 2 mm size fraction) and incubated in 10 L polycarbonate container microcosms for 48 hours. After incubation, a subsample of 5 L was taken from each experimental microcosm using a hand pump. Each sample was sieved through a 50 µm mesh, rinsed with 0.2 μm filtered seawater, and concentrated in 200 ml in a glass beaker. The samples were examined under the stereomicroscope (SZX16, Olympus, Japan) and the number of dead (not swimming and/or not moving) and live individuals (swimming and/or moving after being gently touched with tweezers) of calanoid and cyclopoid copepods were counted for estimating survival. e data included the counts of the dead and live individuals (copepods, including calanoid and cyclopoid copepods). Survival (%) was estimated for each treatment as the live/dead ratio at the end of each incubation (48h).</p>

<p>This repository contains the following: </p> <p>- <code>training</code> folder: Datasets used to train well pad and storage tank models. Note that <code>annotations_image</code> for each example are with respect to a image downloaded from the Google Earth satellite basemap at zoom level 1600 and EPSG:3857, with sizes 640x640 px and 512x512 px for well pads and storage tanks respectively (see also the <code>image_extent </code>column). <code>annotations_latlon</code> also provides the annotations in coordinate space. We also note that we are unable to redistribute the satellite imagery used to train the models in this study due to data licensing. Samples of satellite images may be made available upon request to the corresponding author.</p> <p>- <code>deployment</code> folder: Deployment detections for well pads and storage tanks across the entire Permian and Denver basins. Datasets contain confidence scores (<code>bbox_score</code>) and coordinate locations (<code>geometry</code>) for each detection, as well as a well pad identifier (<code>wp_id</code>) that indicates which well pad a storage tank belongs to.</p>
