Meta-analytical data on soil organic, particulate organic, and mineral-associated organic carbon under nitrogen fertilization, elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide, atmospheric warming, increased precipitation, drought, and their combined effects

Data were harvested from journal articles found on the Web of Science Core Collection and the ProQuest Agricultural and Environmental Database that studied soil organic matter fraction carbon responses to global changes (nitrogen fertilization, elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide, atmospheric warming, increased and decreased precipitation, and combined effects). Soil organic carbon fractions were designated as particulate organic carbon or mineral-associated organic carbon based on size and density cutoffs. Relevant metadata, including article information (authors, publication year), environmental information (soil type, climate, and land use), and experiment information (rates, methods) were also added to the dataset.

McMurdo Dry Valleys Lake Bonney Autonomous Lake Profiler and Samplers (ALPS): Particulate Organic Carbon and Nitrogen Concentrations

Knowledge of the McMurdo Dry Valley (MDV) lakes is limited by winter access, a period which is most relevant in understanding the habitability of other icy worlds and critical to understanding the overall function of these lakes. Owing to the lack of winter access, data that normally require human presence are incomplete. Our goal was to conduct the first year-round investigation of the biogeophysics of these unique lakes. An important part of the McMurdo Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) is evaluating carbon and nitrogen budgets in perennial ice-covered lakes. This data set addresses this core area of research and quantifies the particulate carbon and nitrogen found at specific depths in McMurdo Dry Valley lakes.

Phytoplanktonic polysaccharide-mediated sedimentation of particulate organic carbon triggers lagged methane emissions

<p>Reservoirs act as carbon sinks when sedimentation of particulate organic carbon (POC) exceeds CO2 and CH4 emissions. Here, we study the poorly explored process where phytoplankton-derived acidic polysaccharides (APs) aggregate into particulate organic matter, promoting carbon export to sediments. This source of particulate organic carbon (POC) in sediments can mineralize to CO2 and CH4 over various timescales. Our research, centered on a Mediterranean reservoir, elucidates phenological trends of APs and POC sedimentation and identifies their predominant drivers. Our findings present synchronic sedimentation patterns of POC and APs but identify a two-week delay between POC sedimentation and CH4 emissions. Despite its eutrophic status, our data demonstrate that this reservoir acts as a carbon sink by sequestering 4.33 g C m-2 y-1, which accentuates the importance of temporal integration at multiple scales when analyzing carbon budget within reservoirs.</p>

Data from: Isotopic composition of particulate black carbon in the northern Indian Ocean

<p>The dataset contains the concentration and stable isotopic composition of particulate black carbon (PBC) in the surface waters of the northern Indian Ocean. Samples were collected during multiple cruises to the Northern Indian Ocean (locations, date and time are provided in the datasheet) along with end member sampling of riverine particulate. Surface water samples were filtered onto 0.7 micron GF/F filters (precombusted at 400 degree Celsius) and oven-dried. Particulate black carbon was estimated following the chemothermal oxidation (CTO - 375) method. Briefly, samples were treated using HCl fumes to remove inorganic carbon fractions followed by heating at 400 degree celsius for 24 hours in active airflow to remove the organic carbon fraction. The residual carbon (BC in micromoles per litre) and its isotopic composition (represented by delta notation in permil) was measured using an elemental analyzer (EA: Flash 2000, Thermo Scientific) connected to an isotope ratio mass spectrometer (IRMS: Delta V, Thermo Scientific). The precision of measurement by repeated analysis of standards was better than 10 % for PBC concentration and 0.1 permil for its isotopic composition. The data is associated with the manuscript accepted in Geophysical Research Letters titled, 'Isotopic evidence for degradation of particulate black carbon in the ocean.</p>

Total Particulate Carbon and Nitrogen Concentration from R/V Melville MV1015 in the S. Pacific from Arica, Chile to Easter Island, 2010 (C-MORE project)

<p>&quot; The South East Pacific (SEP) is characterized by very high nutrient concentrations in the waters adjacent to the Chilean coast, but very low nutrient concentrations (oligotrophic) in the mid- South Pacific Subtropical Gyre (SPSG), near Easter Island. The steep gradient in nutrient concentrations across the region affects the level of marine production, the composition of the microbial community, and the operation of major biogeochemical cycles in ways that are not fully understood. Despite the remarkable diversity of trophic conditions, strong gradients and even some unique singularities, the SEP is still the most sparsely sampled oceanic region of the global ocean from hydrodynamic, biological and biogeochemical points of view. The SPSG is also the most oligotrophic of all sub-tropical gyres. Previous expeditions and remote sensing studies have described the nutrient and chlorophyll field, but there have been few simultaneous measurements of chemical properties with microbial community structure and function. This expedition is designed to investigate the impact of elemental nutrient (nitrogen, phosphorus, iron, silicon, carbon) ratios on marine productivity and microbial community composition. Samples for PC (particulate carbon) and PN (particulate nitrogen) were collected on a combusted 25mm glass fiber filter (GF/F) and stored in a -80 freezer until analysis. Samples were further analyzed using a Carlo Erba NA 1500 Elemental Analyzer.&quot; Time is in GMT. Note: it is questionable if the 500m sample collected on 2010-11-27 was really taken at 500m (see comment on data sheet). This &ldquo;best guess&rdquo; for depth was included in the data for CMAP visualization purposes.</p> <p>This description has been reproduced using the following source:<br> &nbsp;<br> http://dmoserv3.bco-dmo.org/jg/info/BCO-DMO/CMORE/bigrapa/PCPN%7Bdir=dmoserv3.bco-dmo.org:80/jg/dir,data=dmoserv3.bco-dmo.org:80/jg/serv/BCO-DMO/CMORE/bigrapa/PCPN.html1%7D?</p>

Particulate organic carbon in the deep-water region of the Gulf of Mexico

<p>Ocean eddies play a major role in lateral and vertical mixing processes of particulate organic carbon (POC), as well as in the transport of heat, salinity, and biogeochemical tracers. In the open waters of the Gulf of Mexico (GoM), however, there are limited observations to characterize how these mesoscale structures affect the spatial distribution of POC in the upper water column, and its importance for organic matter cycling and export. We present the distribution patterns of POC relative to mesoscale features from surface waters in the deep-water region of the GoM during three oceanographic cruises held during the summer months of 2015, 2016, and 2017. Samples were collected under well-stratified upper ocean conditions, which allowed us to assess the spatial and temporal distribution of POC as a function of non-steric sea surface height, density, apparent oxygen utilization, and chlorophyll fluorescence-a. We further explored the variability of integrated surface layer POC concentrations in stations located within the cores and the edges of cyclonic and anticyclonic eddies, or those collected outside these structures. Our results show how the mesoscale eddies influence several important physical and biogeochemical variables as well as the POC concentrations in the surface layer. POC concentration in the surface layer seems to be influenced depending on their locations in these mesoscale structures. Lower POC concentrations are consistently observed&nbsp; in the border of the cyclonic and the center of the anticyclonic eddies, in contrast to the higher POC concentrations observed at the center of the cyclonic and the border of anticyclonic eddies. These mesoscale processes are more prominent in the central part of the GoM and along the path of the large anticyclonic eddies detached from the Loop Current, implying the importance of mixing by mesoscale dynamics for the carbon production and export to depth in this oligotrophic deep-water region of the GoM during the strongly stratified summer season.</p>
