Dataset of ICITS'24 - article "Ethics and AI in Higher Education: A Study on Students' Perceptions"

This dataset encompasses responses from first-year undergraduate students enrolled in an ICT program at Fluminense Federal University. The survey was completed by 61 students via an online platform between June 28th and July 4th, 2023. The findings were subsequently published in an article titled "Ethics and AI in Higher Education: A Study on Students' Perceptions" presented at the ICITS'24 conference.

Article abstract:This initial study investigates the complex ethical concerns surrounding the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in education, with a particular focus on undergraduate students' perceptions of AI tools in their academic efforts. A notable issue is the educational application of these tools, coupled with a pressing need for comprehensive public policies that ensure ethics and privacy are protected. Through qualitative research involving 61 students in an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) course, we explored the teaching of ethics related to the use of AI tools in an academic context. Our findings reveal a tendency among students to favor commercial AI tools that are not tailored for educational use, pointing to a potential shortfall in the educational AI domain. This study underscores the importance of promoting critical thinking and the responsible use of AI tools in academic settings. However, it is crucial to conduct further research with university students and instructors to refine and improve educational frameworks utilizing AI tools.

An Assessment of University Students' Perception Towards the Adoption and Use of Mobile Learning Technologies for Learning

Mobile learning technologies serve has as a transformative tool in the educational sector which gives room for accessibility, flexibility and scalability. It also improves student learning outcomes. This study aims to review research on students' attitude and perception towards the adoption and implementation of mobile learning technologies using the Unified Theory and Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) model. From the studies, results showed that students' perception has a major impact on the adoption and use of mobile technologies. However, based on the various literature reviewed, students' perception is influenced by performance expectancy, effort expectancy (ease of use of the technology), social influence, perceived enjoyment and satisfaction. All these must be put into consideration before design and implementation for the effectiveness. Nevertheless, if all or some of these constructs were not incorporated in the development of mobile learning technology, obstructs the adoption and implementation of mobile learning.

Knowledge and perception regarding MIH among dental students and dental hygienist students in Spain: a cross-sectional study.

Background: Molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH) has a high prevalence in the Spanish pediatric population and is a precursor of carious lesions in teeth in which it is present. Although this pathology is included in the curricula of the Degree in Dentistry and the Training Cycle in Oral Hygiene in our country, the contents currently taught seem to be insufficient in relation to the level of knowledge that we have today about this noxa. Methods: A digital questionnaire of 18 questions was sent to a sample of 448 students attending the 4th and 5th year of the Degree in Dentistry and 2nd year of the Training Cycle in Oral Hygiene from different universities and vocational training centers in the Valencian Community. Descriptive and analytical statistical analysis of the data was subsequently performed. Results: Of the 290 questionnaires that were obtained, 53.8% were from students attending the 2nd year of a training course in oral hygiene and 46.2% were from students pursuing a degree in dentistry. Most of the respondents had heard about MIH (75.2%), mainly through lectures. However, most students had difficulties distinguishing MIH lesions from other lesions (57.2%), feeling not very confident (39.7%) and confident (38.3%) in the correct identification of these lesions. The degree of knowledge about MIH was greater among dental students in all the aspects evaluated: prevalence, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment. Of all the students, 83.8% were interested in increasing their training on MIH, especially in the areas of diagnosis and treatment. Conclusion: The results of the present study justify the need to expand the content on MIH, both theoretical and practical, in the educational curricula of the Degree in Dentistry and Integrated Vocational Training Centers in Spain.

Students' satisfaction with service quality in higher education institutions: the perspective of students' expectations and perceptions in Tanzania

The main study from which these datasets were extracted was conducted through pragmatic approach, where quantitative and qualitative data were collected. A cross-sectional survey design was employed to collect data from one selected Higher Education Institution in Tanzania. Questionnaires with seven Likert-like scales were used to collect data on students’ ratings on expectations, perceptions and satisfaction on service quality in Higher Education and intentions to re-enroll to the same Higher Education. The first year and finalist students were selected through cluster sampling of students pursuing different degree programs. The intent of the study was to examine the perceived differences of students’ expectations, perceptions and satisfaction based on differences of demographic characteristics. The collected data were initially analyzed by conducting Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) to identify dimensions that determine service quality in Higher Education. In addition, Multi Linear Regression Analyses were conducted to examine the linear relation between quantitative (continuous) response variable and one or more independent variables. This was performed to study the relationship between several independent variables and each of the factors produced from factor analysis. Demographic characteristics such as mode of parenting, education level, and economic status, and schooling background, year of study and degree programme (specialization) were used as independent (continuous) variables while the two factors produced in CFA were used as dependent variables. Final data for interpretation were transformed into Tables with parameter estimates and standard errors of linear regression model for expectations, perceptions, satisfaction and intentions.
