The Aegean Ro-Boat Race 2023: the dataset

We present a publicly accessible dataset collected during the Aegean Ro-Boat Race 2023, held at the University of the Aegean in Syros, Greece. This event is an international competition at the university level, where teams are tasked with developing autonomous marine robotic systems that can operate in dynamic maritime environments under real-world conditions. The 2023 competition included three main mission tasks: (1) High-Speed Performance, which evaluates the speed and agility of the vessels; (2) Collision Avoidance, assessing the systems' ability to detect and avoid obstacles in real time; and (3) Endurance, testing the operational longevity and efficiency of the robotic systems over extended periods.

LAGOS-US Race and Ethnicity: Dataset classifying conterminous US lake communities based on racial and ethnic demographic data (v 2.0)

Knowing the consistency of water quality sampling in lakes surrounded by a variety of racial and ethnic communities is important for potential policy uses and to assess community impacts. By using the 2010 US Census race and ethnicity demographic block group data, we analyzed the frequency (i.e., number of years and consistency) of lake water quality sampling according to racial and ethnic demographics in surrounding neighborhoods. Our approach classified human communities near lakes as predominantly White or people of color (POC), and Hispanic or non-Hispanic (NH). Associated R analysis scripts can also be found in this folder. Our data and approach can be used for future studies seeking to analyze environmental monitoring practices in relation to human demographic variables, particularly from US Census data.

Validated names for experimental studies on race and ethnicity

A large and fast-growing number of studies across the social sciences use experiments to better understand the role of race in human interactions, particularly in the American context. Researchers often use names to signal the race of individuals portrayed in these experiments. However, those names might also signal other attributes, such as socioeconomic status (e.g., education and income) and citizenship. If they do, researchers need pre-tested names with data on perceptions of these attributes. Such data would permit researchers to draw correct inferences about the causal effect of race in their experiments. In this paper, we provide the largest dataset of validated name perceptions based on three different surveys conducted in the United States. In total, our data include over 44,170 name evaluations from 4,026 respondents for 600 names. In addition to respondent perceptions of race, income, education, and citizenship from names, our data also include respondent characteristics. Our data will be broadly helpful for researchers conducting experiments on the manifold ways in which race shapes American life.

License: CC-By Attribution 4.0 International

Having an optimal race with hypnosis: Efficient mental training with a hypnosis audio-intervention in professional Downhill Mountainbike athletes

We tested 19 professional downhill mountainbike athletes participating in two consecutive races of the IXS Downhill Cup. All athletes listened to a hypnosis audio-intervention at least one time after the first race. We instructed the athletes to use the personal post-hypnotic trigger to elicit an optimal mental state in the second race. At both races, we measured competitive anxiety, self-confidence, state resilience, and flow with questionnaires and assessed heart rate variability (HRV) as a physiological measure of resilience.

HRV data was measuared using the Polar H10 chest strap and recorded via the Polar Sensor Logger Application. HRV was analysed with Kubios HRV Standard version 3.5.0 Analysis Software. All data were analysed with R.

The original recording of the hypnosis audio-intervention is accessible via this link: https://www.nina-hoffmann.com/mental.

Ocean Data Hours - Ocean Race - Ocean Village - Genova Pavilllion - Cape Town 23.02.2023

The ocean plays a significant role in the Earth's system, and understanding its importance is crucial for ensuring sustainable management and exploitation. Ocean observation should not be a task for experts and scientists alone.

Citizen science is a form of scientific collaboration where members of the public participate in scientific research projects, providing data and observations that can be analyzed by researchers.

This workshop presents a series of CS initiatives exploiting low cost technologies for ocean data collection by showing and discussing their maturity level and how scientists can already use these data.

By supporting citizen science initiatives, policymakers can democratize marine observation science, creating a new type of self-driven, sustainable, and cost-efficient observatory concept, and at the same time, providing for the making of informed decisions based on the best available information.

Ocean Data Hours is a series of workshops and talks organized in the Genova Pavillion at the Ocean Village - Ocean Race 2023.
