Ovenbird song recordings from Alberta (Canada) with individual labels and spatial locations, 2015-2016

This dataset includes spatially localized and individually identified Ovenbird songs. We used automated species detection and acoustic localization to localize Ovenbird singing events from microphone arrays in Alberta, Canada (2015-2016). We then hand-annotated songs to individuals based on acoustic characteristics. This dataset includes the manual annotations and annotations from automated individual identification approaches. This data publication pertains to the manuscript [in prep] by Lapp et al on Ovenbird individual identification and provides further details on the study and the individual identification approach.

This file contains leaf area index (LAI) measurements from an nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and N+P fertilization experiment established in the southern section of the 2007 Anaktuvuk River fire in 2016. LAI was recorded using a handheld plant canopy analyzer (LI-COR 2200C; LI-COR, Lincoln, NE, USA) Data spans 4 years from 2016 (when fertilization began) until 2019. Data was recorded once a year at the peak of each growing season.

The Hubbard Brook Stream Ecology Record: Algal Biomass (Chlorophyll-a), 2018 - ongoing

The Hubbard Brook Stream Ecology record is a companion dataset to the Hubbard Brook Watershed Stream and Precipitation Chemistry record. The Stream Ecology record started in 2018 and HBWatER collects ecological samples from seven gauged watersheds: Watersheds 1 through 6 and Watershed 9. HBWatER measures algal biomass, aquatic invertebrate emergence, and stream decomposition by measuring (1) chlorophyll-a on tiles and artificial moss, which approximate algal biomass growth on bare rock and bryophyte mats, (2) preserved algal biomass on artificial moss substrates in Lugol’s Iodine solution, (3) aquatic invertebrate emergence on replicate sticky traps placed above the stream, and (4) stream decomposition through leaf litter pack and cotton strip decay. To complement these ecological records, HBWaTER installed light sensors and field cameras to obtain better information about the light and stream environment daily. Three replicate light sensors that take sub-daily measurements of light level intensity are placed at each watershed at the weir pond (full-sun), and two under the canopy (partial shade). Field cameras take daily photos at noon of the stream canopy and the stream channel. While many studies at Hubbard Brook have measured algal biomass, aquatic invertebrates, and stream decomposition, they are scattered in locations across the valley, were performed at non-continuous times, and use various semi-comparable methods. The HBWatER Stream Ecology record was created to address this gap and systematically measure any long-term changes in the organisms living in the stream. The collection of HBWatER samples is currently sustained by Tammy Wooster (Cary IES) and analyses of these samples has been performed by Heather Malcom (Cary IES), Audrey Thellman (Duke), Steve Anderson (Duke), Geoff Wilson (Cary IES), and Adam Rok (Duke). Air temperature is measured at 15-minute intervals in six clearings throughout the Hubbard Brook experimental watersheds and at the Headquarters Station. Beginning in 2014, digital sensors housed in aspirated solar radiation shields collected air temperature measurements. These data are gathered at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest in Woodstock, NH, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.

Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest: Daily Temperature Record, 1955 - ongoing

Air temperature at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest (HBEF) is measured at five locations in rain gage clearings throughout the experimental watersheds and at the Headquarters building. The oldest air temperature record dates back to October 20,1955 at Station 1. From 1955 - 2014, temperature measurements were made continuously using hygrothermographs housed in standard shelters. Beginning in 2013, digital sensors housed in solar radiation shields collected daily minimum and maximum temperature measurements. These data are gathered at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest in Woodstock, NH, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.

North Temperate Lakes LTER: Vilas County Property Tax Records 1997 - 2004

Each year, the county government in Vilas County, WI, assembles data on each parcel of property in the county for various governmental administrative purposes. These records serve the register of deeds, the department of taxation, and other county departments, as well as private citizens or businesses, such as realtors, who seek information on properties in the county. These records include assessments of the value of land and built improvements, their location, the name and mailing address of the owner, and other data. LTER has begun to collect these data each year from the county as a means of monitoring owners, and the social identities of owners (whether they are state agencies, private individuals, corporations, non-profit/conservation organizations, etc.). These data have already proved useful as a sampling frame for social science surveys. This data set includes property tax records for Vilas County for the years 1997, 1998, 2001, 2003, and 2004. Infilled daily precipitation data for C1 chart recorder, 1952 - ongoing.

Precipitation data have been collected at the C1 climate station (3022 m asl) almost continuously from 1952 to the present. C1 is on locally level terrain on the southeastern flank of Niwot Ridge, 9.7 km east of the Continental Divide. Surrounding vegetation is closed-canopy subalpine conifer forest. Through 1964, precipitation was recorded using an unshielded U.S. Weather Bureau standard totalizing gauge, with observations manually recorded on an approximately weekly basis. The gauge was located in an open area with sparse tree cover adjacent to the forest proper. Starting in late 1961, daily precipitation has been recorded using a Belfort Universal weighing-bucket gauge with chart recorder in an 8-m diameter clearing in the forest; the forest provides natural shielding for the gauge. The two records were assessed for an impact of this station change on record homogeneity and merged (see Methods). Missing daily data were infilled and multiday records were parsed to dailies (see Methods).

D1 is on a narrow, exposed ridge on the westernmost part of Niwot Ridge, 2.6 km east of and ca. 200 m lower in elevation than the Continental Divide. Surrounding vegetation is low-stature alpine tundra. Through 1969, precipitation was recorded using an unshielded U.S. Weather Bureau standard totalizing gauge, with observations manually recorded on an approximately weekly basis. Starting in 1965, daily precipitation has been recorded using a Belford weighing-bucket gauge with chart recorder and with an Alter-type shield encircled by a Wyoming-snow fence. Overlap in the two records was used to adjust the totalizing gauge record so that it could be merged with the weighing-bucket gauge record (see Methods). Missing daily data were infilled and multiday records were parsed to dailies (see Methods).

Some of these values were estimated from redundant sensors and nearby climate stations. Greenland 1987 was a basis for the methodology; however when it was not possible to use this methodology, new methods were developed.

Plant aboveground biomass dry weight record for Space for Time plots in PIE LTER.

Aboveground biomass measurements were conducted annually near peak biomass to evaluate aboveground plant production and determine differences in relation to other biotic and abiotic factors. In a 0.053 m2 plot, aboveground biomass was clipped to the soil surface at Space For Time plots, dried, and weighed to capture dry weight.

Visuo-motor dataset recorded from a micro-farming robot

<p>This is the accompanying dataset of the paper [1]&nbsp;describing algorithms for intrinsic motivation and&nbsp;episodic memory on the Sony LettuceThink microfarming robot.</p> <p>The LettuceThink microfarming robot developed by Sony Computer Science Laboratories consists of an aluminium frame with an X-Carve CNC machine mounted on it. The CNC machine is used to provide 3-axes movements to a depth camera (Sony DepthSense) mounted at the tip of the vertical z-axis (the end-effector camera). In the experiments presented in the&nbsp;paper, the end-effector camera is facing top-down and only two motors are used (x and y).</p> <p>A simulator of the LettuceThink robot has been developed to ease the testing of different configurations of the learning system. The simulator generates sensorimotor data from requested trajectories of the end-effector camera. Knowing the initial position of the CNC machine and the target position, the simulator linearly interpolates the trajectory and returns the intermediate positions of the camera together with the images captured from each specific position. The sensorimotor data returned by the simulator have been prerecorded by performing a full scan of the (x,y) plane of the CNC machine using a resolution of 5mm. This resulted in 24,964 images, each mapped to an (x,y) position of the CNC machine. The dataset published here contains these images.</p> <p>In particular, the dataset consists of a set of images, each named with the specific position of the 2 motors of the robot. Fine-scale structure of the 2016-2017 Central Italy Seismic Sequence from data recorded at the Italian National Network

<p><strong>Data Set&nbsp;</strong></p> <p>Catalog of 33,983 earthquakes located during the 2016-2017 Central Italy seismic sequence. The velocity model used is the 1D gradient P- and S-wave velocity models (after Carannante et al., 2013). We used the highest quality P- and S-wave arrival times manually picked by analysts of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) seismic monitoring room, having an uncertainty lower than 0.6 s. &nbsp;</p> <p>Events were located by means of a 2-step procedure: the INGV routine absolute locations computation for all events with ML &ge; 1.5 that occurred in the study area between August 2016 and January 2018, using the method described in Chiaraluce et al. (2017); the determination of relative locations by applying the HypoDD code&nbsp;(Waldhauser, 2001)&nbsp;to the catalog picks and phase delay times measured from waveform cross correlation.</p> <p>The time domain cross-correlation method (Schaff et al., 2004; Schaff and Waldhauser, 2005) was applied to seismograms of all pairs of events separated by 3 km or less and recorded at common stations.&nbsp;&nbsp;Seismograms were filtered in the 1-15 Hz frequency range using a 4 pole, zero phase band‐pass Butterworth filter. The correlations measurements were performed on 0.7 s long window for P-waves and 1 s windows for S-waves. Only measurements with correlation coefficients greater than 0.7 were kept, resulting in a total of ~4.4 million P and ~1.1 million S wave delay times.&nbsp;</p> <p>We sub-divided the entire dataset in 18 rectangular boxes, containing a maximum of 6000 earthquakes, orthogonal to and centered on the mean strike of the seismic sequence. The overlap between neighboring boxes is 50% with respect to the NW-SE extension. HypoDD is run separately on each box.
