Data from: A cross-sectional study investigating the relationship between pit recovery time and serum albumin levels in bilateral lower extremity pitting oedema
<p><span><strong>Objectives</strong>:</span><span> In this study, we re-evaluated the relationship between pit recovery time (PRT) and serum albumin levels and elucidated the factors influencing PRT. </span></p> <p><span><strong>Design</strong>:</span><span> Cross-sectional study.</span></p> <p><span><strong>Setting</strong>:</span><span> Patients who visited the outpatient department or were admitted to a small urban hospital in Japan.</span></p> <p><span><strong>Participants</strong>:</span><span> 135 adult Japanese patients</span> <span>with bilateral lower extremity pitting oedema.</span></p> <p><span><strong>Interventions</strong>: </span></p> <p><strong><span>Primary and secondary outcome measures</span></strong><span>: This study assessed the correlation between PRT and serum albumin levels, calculated the predictive accuracy for identifying a group with low albumin levels when the PRT of the lower leg was < 40 s, and identified variables that influence PRT.</span></p> <p><span><strong>Results</strong>:</span><span> We found no significant correlation between lower leg PRT and serum albumin levels. Furthermore, a PRT of < 40 s was largely ineffective in predicting low albumin levels. Factors influencing PRT included the diagnosis of malnutrition oedema, examinations conducted during hospitalisation, diagnosis of cardiac oedema, use of diuretics, thickness of the lower limb soft tissue, serum creatinine level, estimated right ventricular systolic pressure (RVSP), age, serum albumin level, potassium level, and blood urea nitrogen to serum creatinine ratio. Notable correlations with PRT were observed in relation to lower limb soft tissue thickness, age, and estimated RVSP.</span></p> <p><span><strong>Conclusions</strong>:</span><span> Given that the PRT is influenced by multiple factors, its correlation with serum albumin levels is weak. Thus, predicting hypoalbuminaemia based solely on PRT is inaccurate.</span></p>

Data from: Assessing restoration success by predicting time to recovery – but by which metric?
<p><b>1. </b>Restoration of<b> </b>degraded ecosystems may take decades or even centuries. Accordingly, information about the current direction and speed of recovery provided by methods for predicting time to recovery may give important feedback to restoration schemes. While predictions of time to recovery have so far been based mostly upon change in species richness and other univariate predictors, the novel ordination-regression based approach (ORBA) affords a multivariate approach based upon species compositional change.</p> <p><b>2.</b> We used species composition data from four alpine spoil heaps in western Norway, recorded at three time points, to predict time to recovery using ORBA. This approach uses distances between restored plots and reference plots along a successional gradient, represented by a vector in ordination space, to model linear or asymptotic relationships of compositional change as a function of time. Results from ORBA were compared with results from models of more generic univariate attributes, i.e. total cover, species richness and properties of the physical environment as functions of time.</p> <p><b>3.</b> ORBA predictions of time to species compositional recovery varied from less than 60 years with linear models to 115–212 years with asymptotic models. The long estimated time to recovery suggests that the restoration schemes adopted for these spoil heaps are likely to be suboptimal.</p> <p><b>4. </b>Much shorter<b> </b>time to recovery was predicted<b> </b>from some of the more generic univariate attributes, i.e. species richness and total cover, than from species composition. Given the current rates of recovery, most spoil heaps will reach reference levels for total cover and species richness within 50 years while predictions indicate that 67–111 years are needed to restore levels of soil organic matter and pH.</p> <p><b>5.</b> <i>Synthesis and applications</i>. Species composition and soil conditions provide information of generally higher relevance for evaluation of ecosystem recovery processes than the most commonly used metric to assess restoration success, species richness. Species richness is decoupled from species compositional recovery, and likely to be a generally poor measure of restoration success. We therefore encourage further improvement of methods like the ordination-regression based approach that use species compositional data to predict time to recovery.09-Oct-2019</p>
Rapid recovery by fat- and muscle-depleted Blackpoll Warblers following trans-oceanic migration is driven by time-minimization
<p>Non-stop endurance flights are a defining characteristic of many long-distance migratory birds but subsequent recovery phases are not typically distinguished from fueling phases (collectively 'stopovers'), despite endurance flights inducing marked physiological changes including flight muscle atrophy and gastrointestinal tract reductions. Here, we hypothesize that recovery requires unique behavioral adaptations, leading to departures from the predictions of optimal migration theory for time-minimizing migrants. We predict that recovering birds will 1) select (moist) food-rich habitats on arrival; 2) have slow initial fueling rates due to decreased gastrointestinal capacity; 3) show a negative correlation between stopover duration and arrival condition instead of a negative correlation with fuel deposition rate (FDR); 4) stopover longer than required to store energy reserves for subsequent flights; and 5) show evidence of rebuilding flight muscles. To test these predictions, we studied Blackpoll Warblers <em>Setophaga striata</em> in northern Colombia following trans-oceanic flights >2250 km. Birds selected dry seasonal habitats, despite proximity of moist forests, and among 1227 captured individuals, 14-21% were emaciated and 88% had atrophied flight muscles. We recaptured 74 individuals, revealing net positive mass gains and, contrary to Prediction 2, no evidence for slow initial recovery rates. Contrary to Prediction 3, stopover duration was only weakly correlated with arrival condition and birds with high FDR (4.9% LBM/day) had shorter durations (3 days) relative to birds with slower rates (7 days) - both groups accumulated sufficient fuel to reach non-breeding (over-wintering) grounds 500-1000 km away. Mass increases were largely attributable to fat deposition but some birds improved flight muscle condition (31.9%), consistent with Prediction 5. Together these results reveal a strong selection for time-minimization in the decisions made by Blackpoll Warblers following trans-oceanic flights, likely mediated through advantages to early arrival on non-breeding grounds, contrary to our hypothesis of recovery imposing unique selection pressures.</p>
