Resilient farm demographics withstand, adapt, or transform in the face of competitive pressure, technological change, and the expected lifestyles of future generations

<p>Farm demographics has been recognized as an important driver of structural change in European agriculture. Focus groups and computer simulations on farm demographic change were used to better understand its role for the case study regions of the Altmark in the eastern part of Germany and Flanders in the northern part of Belgium. According to these analyses, many potential agricultural entrants are deterred by what they view as a poor quality of life that farming offers. This applies to farm successors as well as hired workers. For higher attractiveness of agriculture, policy objectives should address the social image of farming as well as revitalize rural areas. Increasingly critical is the demand for skilled hired labour. However, policies dealing with farm demographic change ignore these needs and focus almost exclusively on farm succession. Particularly, the direct payment system, including additional support for small farms and young farmers, must be re-evaluated for its effectiveness. The analyses provide evidence that this system constrains European agricultural development more than assists it; ultimately preventing farms from adapting and transforming.</p>

<p>Shapefiles created for the report "A Climate Resilient&nbsp;Path for Ireland&rsquo;s&nbsp;Marine Protected&nbsp;Areas Network", an addendum chapter to "Revitalising Our Seas report: Identifying<br>Areas of Interest for Marine Protected Area Designation in Irish&nbsp;Waters"</p> <p>These shapefiles summarise long-term patterns that emerge from the spatial-meta analysis of physical-biogeochemical and species distribution modelling data, providing an overview of the distribution of climate change refugia and climate change hotspots across Ireland's National Marine Planning Framework between 2026 - 2069, and across the two emissions scenarios considered in the report (RCP4.5 and RCP8.5).&nbsp;</p> <p>Filenames refer to the specific analysis each set of shapefiles belong to: Benthic habitats, benthic megafauna, pelagic habitats, pelagic megafauna and forage fish. Details of the modelling datasets used in each of these analyses, the meta-analysis method and shapefile creation can be found in Annex A1 in the report "A Climate Resilient Path for Ireland&rsquo;s Marine Protected Areas Network".</p>

A Resilient Workflow to Control a Biomedical HPC Simulation in an Urgent Computing Setting

<p><span><span><span><span>We demonstrate a resilient workflow enabled by the LEXIS Platform, running a time- and safety-critical biomedical simulation of virtual stent placement in intracranial arteries using the HemoFlow application. The workflow, as captured on the video, gracefully handles failures of single computing steps or entire computing systems and thus lends itself to urgent computing applications. <br><br><span><span>The concept of this workflow has potential for realising ab-initio computational biomedical simulations which can provide live, targeted guidance to surgeons.</span></span></span></span></span></span></p>

Photographic record of land degradation and resilience in Dogu'a Tembien after the shock of the Tigray war (northern Ethiopia)

<p><span>Following two years of combat, blockade, and power outage, the Tigray war in northern Ethiopia has had a substantial negative impact on the environment (2020&ndash;2022). This photographic dataset, part of a rare study carried out by the same research team before and after a war, compares 26-year legacy data on land degradation, with post-war observations at 56 sites in the Dogu'a Tembien district of Tigray (13&deg;39'N, 39&deg;30'E), at elevations ranging from 1600 to 2800 meters.</span></p> <p><span>With 30 years of environmental research experience in Tigray, we remained as a lone research team after the start of the war and collected ground data at previous research sites during the war. This culminated in international partners returning to the Dogu'a Tembien district in 2023 after they had been absent for four years due to coronavirus restrictions and the Tigray War. We visited 56 previously investigated sites&mdash;which have been documented in 45 prior publications&mdash;through transect walks, where we mostly made qualitative observations and discussions regarding the processes of land degradation and recovery. This included degradation processes like sheet and rill erosion</span><span>, gully erosion</span><span>, landslides</span><span></span><span>, deforestation</span><span>, as well as the most common rehabilitation approaches, i.e. stone bunds</span><span>, check dams</span><span>, exclosures</span><span>, improved hydrological cycle</span><span>, and integrated catchment management</span><span>. Local farmers and other village residents, along with experts who either reside in or have a good understanding of the research area, participated in the group observations.</span></p>

Song capturing lived-experiences of flooding and climate resilience with St. Eugenes Choir Newtownstewart (BluePrint project)

<p>This audio piece represents one of the creative risk communication outputs co-created within the BluePrint project. Between March and October 2024, socially engaged artist Sara Walmsley worked creatively with flood-affected community representatives in Newtownstewart, Co. Tyrone and Eglinton, Co. Derry-Londonderry exploring their lived-experiences of flooding and need for climate adaptation and resilience.&nbsp;</p> <p>In the audio piece, you will hear the melodic, polyphonic harmonies of St. Eugene&rsquo;s Church choir (Newtownstewart) as they give music to the words of members of their community whose homes were destroyed and lives endangered by flood water. The piece captures the voices of those striving to adapt to our changing climate, those who are responding to the urgency by finding solace, hope, strength and courage in the unending and unsurprising resilience and creativity of our communities.&nbsp;</p> <p>The BluePrint project is led by the MaREI Centre, University College Cork, with partners the Playhouse, Derry City and Strabane District Council, and Mayo County Council. The BluePrint project is a recipient of the&nbsp;Creative Climate Action fund, an initiative from the Creative Ireland Programme. Using Hydroclimate Modeling and Social Science to Enhance Flood Resilience on Lake Ontario through the Climate Smart Communities Program

<p>This repository contains several&nbsp;data products associated with the New York Sea Grant project R/CHD-15 entitled <em>Using Hydroclimate Modeling and Social Science to Enhance Flood Resilience on Lake Ontario through the Climate Smart Communities Program.</em><strong><em> </em></strong>These products include:</p> <p>1.&nbsp;Estimates of the 25-year, 50-year, and 100-year flood&nbsp;across&nbsp;the New York coastline of Lake Ontario. These design events (reported in feet) are for still water levels that take into account both average water levels across the lake as well as local variations in water level due to storm surge. Wave setup and wave run-up&nbsp;are not considered in these design events. The design events&nbsp;incorporate the effects of water level regulation and the potential impacts of climate change on water supplies to Lake Ontario, and they are tailored for&nbsp;79 unique locations along the shoreline (identified based on longitude and latitude). These flood levels are presented in an online flood risk assessment tool at:&nbsp;https://kts48.users.earthengine.app/view/lake-ontario-water-level-scenarios</p> <p>2. Protocols and summary of results for a series of focus groups and structured telephone interviews with local officials from communities along the Lake Ontario shoreline to assess barriers to participation in the&nbsp;New York State Climate Smart Communities Program.</p> <p>3.&nbsp; A Crosswalk between activities and administrative requirements of the New York State Climate Smart Communities Program and other federal and state flood resiliency programs.&nbsp;</p> <p>4. A final report summarizing the products above.&nbsp;</p>

Datasets for examining perceptions of fire resilient landscapes

<p>Datasets used to answer the question &#39;what is a fire resilient landscape?&#39;. Included is the data used for a literature review from Scopus and Web of Science containing entries surrounding resilience to landscape fires. Also included is survey responses. Participants came from two groups, students of the Pyrogeography course at Wageningen University, and professionals working within the fire community (both academia and practice). The participants were asked about their perception of a fire resilient landscape, and the responses coded with thematic analysis.</p>

Enhancing Thermal Resilience in Delta Smelt: A Comparative Study of Temperature Regimes During Embryonic Development

This dataset contains larval heart rate measurements from hatchery-reared Delta Smelt (Hypomesus transpacificus), a critically endangered species native to the San Francisco Bay-Delta. The data were collected at the UC Davis Fish Conservation Physiology Lab as part of an experiment investigating how early-life exposure to different thermal environments influences cardiac performance and thermal tolerance. Embryos were incubated under three temperature regimes: constant (16°C), controlled diurnal fluctuation (16–20°C), and natural outdoor pond conditions with variable temperatures. Larval heart rate was recorded during an acute thermal ramp using a microscope-mounted camera system to track cardiac activity in real time. These data were collected to assess the physiological plasticity of Delta Smelt and to inform conservation hatchery strategies aimed at enhancing resilience to thermal stress.

Disturbance legacies and resilience simulation using an individual-based forest landscape model on the Andrews Experimental Forest

Disturbances are key drivers of forest ecosystem dynamics, and forests are well adapted to their natural disturbance regimes. However, as a result of climate change, disturbance frequency is expected to increase in the future in many regions. It is not yet clear how such changes might affect forest ecosystems, and which mechanisms contribute to (current and future) disturbance resilience. We here studied the 6364-ha HJ Andrews Experimental Forest landscape to investigate how patches of remnant old-growth trees (as one important class of biological legacies) affect the resilience of forest ecosystems to disturbance. Using the spatially explicit, individual-based forest landscape model iLand we analyzed the effect of three different levels of remnant patches (0%, 12%, and 24% of the landscape) on 500-year recovery trajectories after a large, high severity wildfire. In addition, we evaluated how three different levels of fire frequency (no fire, a historic fire return interval of 262 years, and a reduced fire return interval of 131 years) modulate the effects of initial legacies. The study investigated effects of legacies on the resilience of forest ecosystem structure (represented by canopy complexity as described by the rumple index), composition (proportion of late-seral species), and functioning (total ecosystem carbon storage). For each scenario of initial legacy and fire return interval 25 replicates were simulated. More information on the simulation methodology as well as the code and executable used for this study can be obtained at http://iLand.boku.ac.at.
