The promise and the perils of resurveying to understand global change impacts

<p>Historical datasets can be useful tools to aid in understanding the impacts of global change on natural ecosystems. Resampling of historically sampled sites ("snapshot resampling") has often been used to detect long-term shifts in ecological populations and communities, because it allows researchers to avoid long-term monitoring costs and investigate a large number of potential trends. But recent simulation-based research has called the reliability of resampling into question, and its utility has not been comprehensively evaluated. Here we combine long-term empirical datasets with novel community-level simulations to explore the accuracy of snapshot resampling of both population- and community-level metrics under a variety of conditions.</p> <p>We show that snapshot resampling often yields spurious conclusions, but the accuracy of results increases when inter-annual variability in the response variable is low or the magnitude of change through time is high. Snapshot resampling also generally performs better for community-level metrics (e.g. species richness) as opposed to population-level metrics pertaining to a single species (e.g. abundance). Finally, we evaluated strategies to improve the accuracy of snapshot resampling, including sampling multiple years at the end of the study, but these produced mixed results. Ultimately, we found that snapshot resampling should be used with caution, but under certain circumstances, can be a useful for understanding long-term global change impacts.</p>

Data for: Correlated biodiversity change between plant and insect assemblages resurveyed after 80 years across a dynamic habitat mosaic

<p>Historical data on co-occurring taxa are extremely rare. As such, the extent to which distinct co-occurring taxa experience similar long-term patterns in species richness and compositional change (e.g., when exposed to a changing environment) is not clear. Using data from a diverse ecological community surveyed in the 1930s and the 2010s, we investigated whether local plant and insect assemblages displayed cross-taxon congruence – i.e., correlated patterns of species richness and compositional change – across six co-occurring taxa: vascular plants, non-vascular plants, grasshoppers and crickets (Orthoptera), ants (Hymenoptera: Formicinae), hoverflies (Diptera: Syrphidae), and dragonflies and damselflies (Odonata). All taxa exhibited high levels of turnover across the ca. 80-year time-period. Despite minimal observed changes at the level of the whole study-system, species richness displayed widespread cross-taxon congruence (i.e., correlated temporal change) across local assemblages within the study system. Hierarchical logistic regression models suggest a role for shared responses to environmental change underlying cross-taxon correlations and highlight stronger correlations between vascular plants and their direct consumers, suggesting a possible role for biotic interactions between these groups. These results provide an illustration of cross-taxon congruence in biodiversity change using data unique in its combination of temporal and taxonomic scope and highlight the potential for cascading and comparable effects of environmental change (abiotic and biotic) on co-occurring plant and insect communities. However, analyses of historical resurveys based on currently available data come with inherent uncertainties. As such, this study highlights a need for well-designed experiments, and monitoring programs incorporating co-occurring taxa, to determine the underlying mechanisms and prevalence of congruent biodiversity change as anthropogenic environmental change accelerates apace.</p>

Vegetation resurvey dataset in Nahuel Huapi National Park (Tronador area)

<p>This dataset represents a comprehensive survey of temperate Patagonian forests, collected over a span of nearly six decades (1965 to 2024). Vegetation resurveys of Dolomiti Bellunesi

<p>The dataset contains the resurvey of historical vegetation plots in the Dolomiti Bellunesi National Park. Resurvey data are focus on 59 plots sampled in four main vegetation types:</p> <ul> <li>15 in the snowbeds with dominance of dwarf willows (<em>Salix herbacea</em> L. or <em>S. retusa</em> L.) or <em>Luzula alpinopilosa</em> (Chaix) Breistr;</li> <li>12 in the secondary alpine and subalpine acidophytic grasslands dominated by <em>Nardus stricta </em>L.;</li> <li>19 in the primary mesophytic subalpine and alpine grasslands on neutral or base-rich soils dominated by <em>Sesleria caerulea </em>(L.) Ard. and <em>Carex sempervirens</em> Vill.;</li> <li>13 in the Primary xerophytic subalpine and alpine grasslands on neutral or base-rich soils dominated by <em>Sesleria caerulea</em> and <em>Helictotrichon parlatorei</em> (J. Woods) Pilg.</li> </ul> <p>Historical plots were sampled from 1998 to 2003 while the resurvey was carried out from 2018 to 2019. These plots are scattered between 1320 and 2190 m a.s.l., mainly &nbsp;located inside the alpine life zone.
