Fig. 1. The Kruskal-Wallis rank sum test for the boxplot returned a in Comparison of in vitro methods to inhibit growth of a virulent strain of Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Longcore, Pessier, and Nichols 1999)

Fig. 1. The Kruskal-Wallis rank sum test for the boxplot returned a chi-squared value = 2, degrees of freedom (df) = 2, and P = 0.3679. The Wilcoxon rank sum test for the positive control and the highest concentration of amphotericin B returned W = 9, P = 0.1. These analyses show that the alternative hypothesis is true and assumes that there is information in the magnitudes and signs of the differences between paired observations, because the mean (location shift) is not equal to 0. Observed differences in mean cell count between the three groups (0.0, 1.6, and 3.2 µg/mL) are not statistically significant (P> 0.05).

The Set I macrochromosomes of karyotype K2, in which one of the original Set I metacentrics apparently underwent centric fission, resulting in 2 + 38 + 30 = 70 chromosomes; from UAZ 21647. C. The Set I macrochromosomes of karyotype K3, in which two of the Set II chromosomes apparently had undergone centric fusion, resulting in 4 + 34 + 30 = 68 chromosomes; from AMNH R-128317. D. The Set I macrochromosomes of karyotypes K4–K6, in which another pair of Set II chromosomes apparently underwent centric fusion, resulting in 5 + 32 + 30 = 67 chromosomes in K4, followed by additional modifications in K5 and K6 (not illustrated; see text); from AMNH R-115954. Note that there is only one clear secondary constriction (NOR) in each, subterminal on one arm of a Set I metacentric chromosome. Scale bar represents 10 microns.

Girls in early childhood increase food returns of nursing women during subsistence activities of the BaYaka in the Republic of Congo

Nursing mothers face an energetic trade-off between infant care and work. Under pooled energy budgets, this trade-off can be reduced by assistance in food acquisition and infant care tasks from non-maternal caregivers. Across cultures, children also often provide infant care. Yet the question of who helps nursing mothers during foraging has been understudied, especially the role of children. Using focal follow data from 140 subsistence expeditions by BaYaka women in the Republic of Congo, we investigated how potential support from caregivers increased mothers' foraging productivity. We found that the number of girls in early childhood (ages 4–7) in subsistence groups increased food returns of nursing women with infants (kcal collected per minute). This effect was stronger than that of other adult women, and older girls in middle childhood (ages 8–13) and adolescence (ages 14–19). Child helpers were not necessarily genetically related to nursing women. Our results suggest that it is young girls who provide infant care while nursing mothers are acquiring food – by holding, monitoring, and playing with infants– and, thus, that they also contribute to the energy pool of the community during women's subsistence activities. Our study highlights the critical role of children as caregivers from early childhood.

"It was recorded on Sunday, morning of the 28th of September as some of the slower runners of the Berlin Marathon made it past Torstrasse near my flat. Iwas out to buy some bread for breakfast, but Iusually bring a camera and my Edirol R-1 recorder whenever Igo out. Since Iwas freshly returned to Berlin Iguess Iwas sensitive to the more antiquated sounds which still survive there, like that of the organ grinder. Iam generally interested in how human beings are replacing the presence of Nature with an artificial environment made entirely by human hands (and thus far more understandable, it is hoped). In this new Human Nature, the sounds of Nature are also Human made. Iwrite about these things, but Ialso use the sounds in my videos and my interactive and generative media work, so generally Iam wandering around building up my archive of media documents for use as material in future works."
