PIE LTER suspended sediments at Law's Point, West Creek, a tidal marsh and creek off the Rowley River, Rowley, MA, during 2016-2017.

Turbidity and calibrated suspended sediment concentration measurements were collected along a shore-normal transect from the channel in West Creek, Rowley, MA extending 24 meters into the marsh interior at Law's Point at the PIE LTER. Data was collected every 15 minutes over two different growing seasons during 2016 and 2017, totaling 9 months.

Stochastic modeling of sediment connectivity for reconstructing sand fluxes and origins in the unmonitored Se Kong, Se San, and Sre Pok tributaries of the Mekong River

<p>Sediment supply to rivers, subsequent fluvial transport, and the resulting connectivity on network-scales are often sparsely monitored or subject to major uncertainty. Hence, we propose to adopt stochastic modeling approaches for studying network sediment connectivity. We demonstrate such a stochastic approach for modeling sand connectivity in the major, poorly monitored Se Kong, Se San, and Sre Pok (3S) tributaries of the Mekong River. Specifically, we run many random initializations of the CASCADE modeling framework for sediment connectivity in a Monte Carlo approach in order to quantify how unknown properties of sediment sources translate into uncertainty regarding network sediment connectivity. We identify a reduced ensemble of model realizations that reproduces downstream observations of sediment transport. This ensemble presents an inverse stochastic approximation of the spatial distribution, magnitude, and variability of transport capacity, sediment flux, and bed material grain size in the entire network (i.e., upscaling point observations to the entire network). The approximated magnitude of sediment flux in each tributary is controlled by reaches of low transport capacity (“bottlenecks”). These “bottlenecks” limit the ability of the inverse stochastic approximation to predict sediment transport in the upper parts of the catchment but they allow a clear partitioning of sand deliveries from the 3S to the Mekong, with the Se Kong delivering less (1.9 Mt/yr) and coarser (median grain size: 0.4 mm) sand than the Se San (5.3 Mt/yr, 0.22 mm) and Sre Pok (11 Mt/yr, 0.19 mm).</p>

Data for: The pace of global river meandering influenced by fluvial sediment supply

<p>Meandering rivers move gradually across the floodplains, and this river movement presents socioeconomic risks along river corridors and regulates terrestrial biogeochemical cycles. Experimental and field studies suggest that fluvial sediment supply can exert a primary control on lateral migration rates of rivers. However, we lack an understanding of the relative importance of environmental boundary conditions, such as floodplain vegetation and sediment supply, in setting the pace of river meandering across different environmental settings. Here, we combine the analysis of satellite imagery and global-in-scale sediment and water discharge models to evaluate the controls on lateral migration rates of 139 meandering rivers that span a wide range in size, climate, and bank vegetation. We show that migration rates normalized by the channel width monotonically increase with the volumetric sediment flux normalized by the characteristic size of the river. This relation is consistent across rivers in vegetated and unvegetated catchments, indicating that enhanced lateral migration rates in unvegetated basins is likely not only facilitated by lower bank mechanical strength, but also by higher normalized sediment supply in ephemeral rivers. Using three case examples, we also demonstrate that width-normalized meander migration rates respond to spatial gradients in sediment supply caused by river impoundments, highlighting the prominent role of sediment supply in setting the pace of meander migration. Our results suggest that sediment-supply variations caused by climate, land-cover and land-use changes can lead to predictable changes in meandering river evolution and ultimately drive architectural changes in sedimentary stratigraphy.</p>

Assessing suspended sediment fluxes with acoustic doppler current profilers: case study from large rivers in Russia

<p>The dataset contains measurements of water discharge by Teledyne RDInstruments RioGrande WorkHorse ADCP unit with a working frequency of 600kHz mounted on a moving boat in 6 areas over large rivers of Russia. The dataset comprises the four largest Arctic Siberian rivers and included continuous ADCP measurements done in 2018-2020 at constant crossection at each river located upper from the impact of recipient seas (tides, surges) near the cities of Salekhard (Ob River), Igarka (Yenisey River), Zhigansk (Lena river) and Chersky (Kolyma River).&nbsp; Another area includes ADCP measurements over 20 transects (named S1&hellip;S26, fig. 2) in the lower 200 km of the river Selenga on 27-31July 2018. The research of River Morphology transition and Sediment variation: Shule River, Northwest of China

<p>The data acquisition in this study is mainly divided into two parts: indoor statistics and field measurements to obtain. In the indoor work, satellite image data and radar digital elevation data were primarily used to measure and count the river width (Fig.1c), sinuosity, gradient, and elevation every 500m along the top of the Shule River downward (Tab.1). The river width was calculated as the distance between the outer banks, measured at a 90&deg; angle to the river axis, including the channel bar and point bar (Mcglue et al., 2016). The classification of river morphology is mainly based on the size of sinuosity (Rust, 1978). The sinuosity greater than 1.5 is defined as a meandering river, and less than 1.5 is defined as a braided river (Fig.1c). The river gradient is counted for every two adjacent measurement points. According to the above measurement criteria, there are 237 river morphology data within the alluvial fan of the Shule River (Tab.1).</p> <p>In the field measurement process, due to the limited accuracy of satellite images in portraying river morphology. We also use UAV aerial photography to refine further the river&#39;s morphological characteristics based on satellite images, which mainly included the channel bar and point bar description. Under the guidance of sedimentological theory, we measured and sampled the gravel in the modern riverbed of Shule River (Fig.2). By measuring the grain size and orientation parameters of gravel(Fig.2a), we research the refinement characteristics of sediments from the apex to the toe (Folk, 1954). Among them, gravel grain size and orientation were measured by the quantitative characterization method of gravel orientation proposed by Huang YuanGuang et al. (Fig.2a, b), and grain size was determined by the long flat axis of gravels (Huang et al., 2018), gravel orientation was measured by the rose diagram of the relative apparent dip (Fig.2b) (Huang et al., 2018; Tao et al., 2018). A total of five gravel statistical points were included within the alluvial fan of the Shule River, and a total of 1862 gravel grain size parameters were measured (Tab.2). We also use the hand-hold X-ray fluorescence spectrometer to measure the element characteristics of each sampling point (Fig.2c, d; Tab.3), which uses intelligent one-button testing and intelligent judgment functions for elements between atomic numbers 12-92 (Mg-U) (Fig.2e; Tab.3).</p>

Laboratory measurements of nitrous oxide production rates in agricultural soils from Lancaster, PA, estuarine sediments from the Scheldt Estuary Belgium/Netherlands, and estuarine soils from the Delaware River NJ under gradients of physicochemical perturbation

A set of experiments was performed to test 1) how various physicochemical perturbations (salinity, zinc, temperature, soil moisture, and pH) influenced denitrification and nitrous oxide production on short timescales (<1 day) in agricultural soils from Lancaster, PA, USA, 2) how variation in a single parameter (salinity) influenced rates of denitrification and nitrous oxide production in sediments that experience a range in that parameter (tidal freshwater, oligohaline, and mesohaline estuarine sediments from the Scheldt River estuary Belgium/Netherlands) on short timescales (< 1 day), and 3) how denitrification and nitrous oxide production along with key functional gene expression in tidal freshwater estuarine soils from the Delaware River, NJ, USA responded to a long-term (6 month) change in a single parameter (salinity) in a press experiment with subsequent short-term (< 1 day) pulses. In the final long-term experiment, nitrite reductase (nirS) and nitrous oxide reductase (nosZ) gene expression were also measured at three timepoints (days 7, 35, and 110).

Sediment Source Ascription of Forest Roads in the Upper Little Tennessee River Basin

The purpose of this project was to better understand if geochemical fingerprinting could determine sediment provenance for catchments with and without USDA Forest Service Roads. Sediment source ascription is valuable because sediment is one of the most important non-point source pollutants affecting surface waters in the southeastern United States. Gravel roads represent surfaces of geologically fresh material, rich in weatherable minerals, some of which are preserved in transport, and distinguishable in sediment deposits. Sediment samples were collected from sources of active erosion as well as within the channel near watershed outlets. Analysis for 33 elements, along with statistical separation allowed provenance to be determined for roads and stream banks. Discriminant analysis shows that road sediment is differentiated by P, Mo, and Na. Bank sediment can be distinguished by Pb. Road sources accounted for 39 to 61 percent of bedload sediment and the remainder was from banks.

Sediment profiles of dissolved oxygen and nitrous oxide along with temperature and sediment water content, Rowley River, Rowley, MA

Environmental pulses, or sudden, marked changes to the conditions within an ecosystem, can be important drivers of resource availability in many systems. In this study, we investigated the effect of tidal pulsing on the fluxes of nitrous oxide (N2O), a powerful greenhouse gas, from a marine intertidal mudflat on the north shore of Massachusetts, USA. We found these tidal flat sediments to be a sink of N2O at low tide with an average uptake rate of ??6.7 6 2 lmol??m??2??h??1. Further, this N2O sink increased the longer sediments were tidally exposed. These field measurements, in conjunction with laboratory nutrient additions, revealed that this flux appears to be driven primarily by sediment denitrification. Additionally, N2O uptake was most responsive to dissolved inorganic nitrogen with phosphorus (DINþDIP) addition, suggesting that the N2O consumption process may be P limited. Furthermore, nutrient addition experiments suggest that dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) releases N2O at the highest levels of nitrate fertilization. Our findings indicate that tidal flats are important sinks of N2O, potentially capable of offsetting the release of this potent greenhouse gas by other, nearby ecosystems.
